Is it the case that those supporting gender ideology have developed a new tactic? Coming on here pretending to be a scientist stating their profession, and then proffering their expert knowledge via a link to wiki?

Surely if they were telling the truth they would link us to a peer review paper from a scientific website.

Is it a new trend or have I just cottoned on to it. In an attempt to influence new comers.

Replies and discussion gratefully appreciated, as long as you don't point out that i can be a bit thick..

Ooh, I must have missed this (I sometimes regret not being on X/Twitter). Do you have a link to an example of this? I'd quite like to read it (and the pages thay link to) for the LOLs. 😆

popebishop · 09/04/2024 17:42

Social Media posts of this type ("biology is complicated actually, and I'm going pretend there aren't two sexes") have been doing the rounds for years.
Most people posting them don't have very good critical thinking skills.

AlisonDonut · 09/04/2024 17:43

They never tell us what the third gamete is and it's role in procreation.

Until they do, I'm just going to keep asking that question when I see their nonsense.

Not on twits, off to find the link on here that made me think

is that recent? I missed it too 😀

Sexism does tend to give some people the impression that mumsnet can't possibly have any members who are scientists (or doctors, lawyers, journalists...etc)

ItsFunToBeAVampire · 09/04/2024 17:47

To be blunt, I assume anyone willing to say TWAW will lie about anything else to further their cause, so I don't doubt that people who say they're biologists (or whatever authority) are lying.

That's why it's so dangerous for politicians, governments and the police to say it. I now don't trust any of them (not that I had a lot of trust in the first place, but it's totally gone now).

There are definite trends that ripple through the TRA arguments, at one time I kept seeing the phrase 'stochastic terrorism' everywhere on TRA Twitter, they've just moved onto the new trend now. One prominent TRA says something and then it gets parroted by the others that outsource their thinking.

lonelywater · 09/04/2024 17:49

This is, and remains, dead simple. Ask any of these gender loons "show me one bona fide and attested instance of anyone at all ever changing sex-anytime, anywhere". Game over. (p.s.-fuck of with your clownfish)

Karensalright · 09/04/2024 17:50

@Datun It was on that thread about older people not accepting gender ID it closed before i could comment but noted a person purporting to be a biologist and suggesting in a very surreptitious way that things were more complicated than we think. It was almost benign.

” I am 68 and a biologist….” Can’t recall how they framed it but was sneaky.

Am having my tea in a mo but will look for it

Another biologist. 68, which is only relevant given the OP on this thread.

XX = female and XY = male is a simplification. The genes (which are subject to frequent random mutations, as all genes are) control the production of hormones in utero and at puberty, and these hormones control the development of sexual organs.

“In general, androgens are considered "male sex hormones", since they have masculinizing effects, while estrogens and progestogens are considered "female sex hormones"[6] although all types are present in each sex at different levels.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_hormone

I think it’s perfectly possible that some humans that present as men have “a sense of self” as female. I’m happy to accept that they are females, who have suffered a genetic/hormonal accident in their early development. And accept them with sympathy as women.

(I was a “tomboy” girl, actually prayed as a child to please let me wake up and be a boy. A rejection of the limitations imposed on girls in my generation. I’ve never been a conventionally girly women. But I’ve never had any “sense of self” as anything but female.)

Don't forget the mysterious High Powered White Collar Job.

Which always reminds me of an oddball neighbour I used to have who kept insisting that he was very important as he was a Fitter at Fords in Speke.

PurpleSparkledPixie · 09/04/2024 17:57

I noticed that OP but my eyes glazed over it. Ever since the Wiki Owner said don't trust what is on the wiki I have stopped trusting certain information from there. I'm more likely to trust a wiki post about hedgehog habitats or Pluto than I am about any regarding human biology (or modern day nazis).

Hah @LarkLane where I used to live it was if you worked at Royces. Very important job apparently, even if you were in the security hut letting the workers in.

ditalini · 09/04/2024 17:58

This is the new-ish "hormonal sex" isn't it?

This is not a useful definition if sex by any stretch of the imagination.

A woman with excess androgens is not more male, and a man with low testosterone is not less male.

Artificially (or naturally) changing the levels of oestrogen and testosterone in the body does not a sex change make.

It's so not complicated, especially when you remove the dsd red herrings which don't exist at a higher rate in the trans community. Some people wish they were the opposite sex. They're not.

Karensalright · 09/04/2024 18:00

I don't believe a word of that post, i mean what sex they are or what they do.

I think it is an approach to. Try a persuade new GC away from reality politics.

BTW waiting for the pasta to boil.

OP posts:
Karensalright · 09/04/2024 18:01

DSD all have a male or female sex, and that is science (ref wiki)

I think there is a certain amount of desperation around due to the final Cass review coming out tomorrow. There seem to be a greater number of posters identifying as scientists and biologists than previously. However, as soon as they post, it is immediately obvious that they are neither of those things.

Tinysoxxx · 09/04/2024 18:03

😂
Flemish Horse is on the ropes with that one (bit of a sailing joke there).

Oh come on! Don't be so sceptical! I'm sure that some of them got Ds & Cs on O-Level Biology...

ZeldaFighter · 09/04/2024 18:06

Did any of these people ever listen to Cersei in Game of Thrones (stone cold and brilliantly portrayed by Lena Headey) rant about the limitations of being a woman? Of how she had more balls than any of the men around her? And to be fair, many of the men were not desperate to get killed in battle because they were blokes! Rhaenyra says the same things 500 years before her, in narrative terms.

It isn't new to rail against sexist expectations. It isn't new to feel the sexist life planned out for you is unfair and unwanted. It's just that since the 1960s, people have been told you can change this with drugs and surgery but it's not true.

Women, men and trans people should pull together to expand the bandwidth of "man" and "woman " to give everyone a place.

Garlicked · 09/04/2024 18:07

Thank goodness for biologists who are willing to spend valuable time explaining to adult women what sex hormones are! Now, if only FlemishHorse had clarified how these hormones make some humans that present as men have “a sense of self” as female, we'd all be a lot further along in our understanding.

If this were true, not only would it be a great leap forward for scientific knowledge; it would also provide the basis for a diagnostic test of 'transgenderism'. Wouldn't that be useful!

Peskysquirrel · 09/04/2024 18:07

Ah, hi @Tinysoxxx ! Was just going to quote your post on that thread for those who missed it:

Another biologist here. Women are women. Men are men. Nothing can change that. If you are a man and pump yourself full of ‘female’ hormones you are still a man. If your brain structure changes or parts of your brain are removed, your sex doesn’t change.
It is that simple.

Plasmodesmata · 09/04/2024 18:08

I agree with Richard Dawkins and Lord Winston on this one.

TheCoolOliveBalonz · 09/04/2024 18:09

Amount of oestrogen in your blood determines how much you like a flowery frock. I read that post but couldn't get angry about it. It was so silly. If I started testerone shots tomorrow I'd develop a love of DIY. Like what are they on about.

Helleofabore · 09/04/2024 18:10

I saw this and thought about all the biologists that we see on twitter who state something similar.

That one was stating that it was overly simple to discuss chromosomes, and that is true. However they then went into philosophical belief that was not scientifically proven.
