Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Biology is not as simple as one might think trust me i am a biologist….

Is it the case that those supporting gender ideology have developed a new tactic? Coming on here pretending to be a scientist stating their profession, and then proffering their expert knowledge via a link to wiki?

Surely if they were telling the truth they would link us to a peer review paper from a scientific website.

Is it a new trend or have I just cottoned on to it. In an attempt to influence new comers.

Replies and discussion gratefully appreciated, as long as you don't point out that i can be a bit thick..

Did somebody really write that?! 🤣🤣🤣

No. Sorry! I was paraphrasing..... a lot!

Peskysquirrel · 09/04/2024 18:07

Ah, hi @Tinysoxxx ! Was just going to quote your post on that thread for those who missed it:

Another biologist here. Women are women. Men are men. Nothing can change that. If you are a man and pump yourself full of ‘female’ hormones you are still a man. If your brain structure changes or parts of your brain are removed, your sex doesn’t change.
It is that simple.

Blushing. Thank you. 😊

Nellodee · 09/04/2024 18:18

I think if you took a random sample of posters from this forum and asked, “What is the chromosomal cause of sex determination?” You would get a very high proportion who would answer, “The SRY gene, usually found on the Y chromosome“ as compared to the general public. There’s always the assumption that we are all dumb Brexiteering anti-vaxxers who need educating. Ageism and misogyny rolled into one bundle of insulting stereotypes, because insulting stereotypes really is all that this ideology has propping it up.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 09/04/2024 18:18

Most of the self identified scientists, safeguarding / mental health experts, lawyers, "worked with vulnerable children" etc are evidently just anti women transactivists who are normally quickly outed. Imho, they're immediately evident by their rigid thinking, use of random googling and an intense dislike of women that seeps out of their posts. Some claim to be feminists, women, mothers while their posts demonstrate they're nothing of the sort.

They're all singularly dismissive of women on here and keen to paint this fantastic array of intelligent, humorous, wise women as right wing bigots. The brilliant thing is, no matter how exasperating they are, eventually the rest of the board seems to post around them as they rant in to the wind about how awful this board is.

And yet she we persisted.😊

Helleofabore · 09/04/2024 18:25

One thing that I have noticed over the past month, most definitely since the WPATH leaks, is that some of the usual posters who would post about how safe PBs are and how affirming only treatment is most definitely life saving and how the negative side effects are just like all other treatments and how it is transphobic to point out the negative side effects of these treatments. And that cutting breasts off 18 year old females is just 'gender affirming' treatment and nothing to discuss. Well... those posters have disappeared.... almost as if they have realised that no one is going to be believe their misinformation and fuckwittery anymore.

Why did the thread disappear? I was lurking so didn’t see a deletion message

Plasmodesmata · 09/04/2024 18:27

Shame I missed that thread. Were there clownfish?

OnandOnforHoursandHours · 09/04/2024 18:31

this fantastic array of intelligent, humorous, wise women

To be fair, I'm a right chump quite a bit of the time.

But I'm not in any doubt about which sex gives birth.

DewinDwl · 09/04/2024 18:32

Actually I know someone closely who is a biologist (as in degree in biology and working in a related field) and is totally TWAW. Of course she refuses to discuss anything to do with gender identity with me as it's easy to calmly dismantle anything she says, and then all she has left is desperate, shouty slogans. It really is very curious.

Swashbuckled · 09/04/2024 18:33

I find men often use the phrase “Trust me” before they give their opinion as fact. The onus is on the other to do the verb of trusting. Lets them off the hook of doing the work of “convincing” someone with informed argument. (You know, just in the local pub for instance etc.)

Probs a bit of a tangent...

Don't forget the mysterious High Powered White Collar Job.

Which always reminds me of an oddball neighbour I used to have who kept insisting that he was very important as he was a Fitter at Fords in Speke.

I'm sure that was far more important a job than being a fitter at Fords Halewood (niche knowledge on display there…).

I remember when FWR had a geneticist poster who was pretty much Nobel prize adjacent. So much fun when people would turn up and start strutting their nonsense.

Crankywiddershins · 09/04/2024 18:33

@Karensalright I think you're right, it's the current argument of choice. As pp said the imminent arrival of the Cass review is probably making them desperate.
I suspect that most TRAs have cried themselves to sleep every night since JKR posted in support of Maya and the fact that they can't silence KJK must cause them nightmares when they do finally drop off.
Add in all the other brave women and men challenging the ideology plus the growing group of hurt, angry, loud de-transitioners and I think they know that the end is coming. There are scientists, counselors, campaigners and sensible people TERFS approaching from all sides. Most know they jumped on a shit bandwagon but don't know how to get off. So fake science is all they have left.

Yes, I saw someone claiming to be a scientist and citing Wiki. I just rolled my eyes and moved on. I couldn't even bother quoting and saying WTF? At some point you just know that almost everyone else reading that rolled their eyes too, and the ones that didn't? They are also playing 'scientist' from their basement.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 09/04/2024 18:36

I'd love to make a sensible interjection but I'm too busy laughing at the idea of a scientist seriously citing Wikipedia. Marvellous.

Meadowfinch · 09/04/2024 18:36

Just ignore them.

Scientists don't have to rely on 'trust me'. If they were genuine & competent, they could provide scientific fact, peer reviewed and acknowledged.

Another biologist. 68, which is only relevant given the OP on this thread.

XX = female and XY = male is a simplification. The genes (which are subject to frequent random mutations, as all genes are) control the production of hormones in utero and at puberty, and these hormones control the development of sexual organs.

“In general, androgens are considered "male sex hormones", since they have masculinizing effects, while estrogens and progestogens are considered "female sex hormones"[6] although all types are present in each sex at different levels.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_hormone

I think it’s perfectly possible that some humans that present as men have “a sense of self” as female. I’m happy to accept that they are females, who have suffered a genetic/hormonal accident in their early development. And accept them with sympathy as women.

(I was a “tomboy” girl, actually prayed as a child to please let me wake up and be a boy. A rejection of the limitations imposed on girls in my generation. I’ve never been a conventionally girly women. But I’ve never had any “sense of self” as anything but female.)

Oh I saw that. I was interested until the penultimate paragraph and then I thought what? you've just diverted from science to fantasy

Crankywiddershins · 09/04/2024 18:38

Gosh! Two pages in and no derail. Do you think mishy and co are ok?

RethinkingLife · 09/04/2024 18:39

MrsOvertonsWindow · 09/04/2024 18:35

I met many a fitter at Fords Halewood 😊

I'm trying to think if Fords Speke or Halewood would have been closer to Hunts Cross although I should think British Leyland (?) might have been the closest. (Really stretching into arcane knowledge of car manufacturers in that area back then!)

Back to science/society/contemporary culture. We'll see what happens when the Cass Review is dropped for public scrutiny tomorrow!

RufustheFactualReindeer · 09/04/2024 18:40

absolutely. And it's the dogged, relentless continuing that outs them even more.

It's the latest propaganda technique demonstration.

It's an 'appeal to authority' technique where you say you have more authority than others because you have a certain status or recognised skill.

Please read this wiki with a list of various different techniques. There's a whole pile that have been commonly used. Some examples:

Ad hominem
A Latin phrase that has come to mean attacking one's opponent, as opposed to attacking their arguments.
Ad nauseam
This uses tireless repetition of an idea. An idea, especially a simple slogan, that is repeated enough times, may begin to be taken as the truth. This approach is more effective alongside the propagandist limiting or controlling the media.
Bandwagon
Bandwagon and "inevitable-victory" appeals attempt to persuade the target audience to join in and take the course of action that "everyone else is taking."
Inevitable victory: invites those not already on the bandwagon to join those already on the road to certain victory. Those already or at least partially on the bandwagon are reassured that staying aboard is their best course of action. (e.g., "The debate is over. Nearly everyone who matters agrees with me.")
Join the crowd: This technique reinforces people's natural desire to be on the winning side. This technique is used to convince the audience that a program is an expression of an irresistible mass movement and that it is in their best interest to join.

There's loads more. Glittering Generalities is a fav on these boards.
