I just turned it on and he's giving some defender of the Scottish hate crime bill a hard time

Surprised to hear Peter Tatchell offered up to criticise the Act. Good questioning from Justin Webb of the Scottish Gov rep
Q “why weren’t women included?”
A “we needed to do more work”
Q “but you didn’t need to do more work did you?”

Why weren’t women included? Baffling!

ArabellaScott · 01/04/2024 08:39

Indeed. Lord Bracadale had advised women should be included when he made his original report.

TBH I don't want this expanded in any form; this law is pish and needs to go.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/04/2024 09:00

Who is the defender?

LizzieSiddal · 01/04/2024 09:02

He was great.

I nearly fainted when Tatchell said women needed more protection, I wondered if he was about to say “April Fool”.

Because the Scottish elected officials love a good 'decapitate TERFs' sign?

porridgecake · 01/04/2024 09:05

If women were included in this ridiculous bill the police would never get anything else done. They will be busy enough with all the fabricated accusations against women anyway. It is all just one big witch hunt.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/04/2024 09:08

For all Tatchell's many faults, I think he is a free speech advocate even for people he disagrees with.

BettyFilous · 01/04/2024 09:09

Did I hear the Scot Gov woman saying if the misgenderer was in England it was for the English authorities to investigate? Is she not aware that if it’s read by someone in Scotland it’s treated as published in Scotland and can (must?) be investigated by Police Scotland if reported? That’s what I’ve seen in recent media reporting about this legislation.

PondFloater · 01/04/2024 09:20

Justin Webb was great!
Unchastened after his recent telling off.

Villagetoraiseachild · 01/04/2024 09:25

Justin was in fine feisty form.

BettyFilous · 01/04/2024 09:29

Justin no doubt has a viable employment case using the Forstater ruling following his recent kangaroo court disciplinary. In his shoes and knowing how much crowdfunding support there is for GC cases, he’s probably less inclined to pussyfoot around. Any further chastisement just strengthens his case. It’s not like the BBC would be able to mount any kind of credible defence if they were to argue he was flouting impartiality rules. If anything, he’s bringing some much needed balance to their woeful output. Go Justin! 💪

Cauliflowery · 01/04/2024 09:32

Can we pause for a second and imagine a scenario where there was more work to be done before trans was included in the hate crime bill, and they had gone ahead with it regardless?

When she said that it confirmed to me that she had no idea what she was saying and was literally making up stuff as she went along to get through the interview. It was a remarkably poor performance and revealing of what we can expect from the application of this law: it will be made up as it goes along and will be arbitrary.

BethDawn · 01/04/2024 09:36

Justin was good. She just sounded like she had no idea what the real world implications of the Act her government has passed could possibly be.

Reminds me of NS’s defenses over men in women’s prisons. She sets the policy then tries to blame the SPS for men being in prisons.

Seems to be an SNP tactic. Set the policy and law, then blame your public servants if it being enacted creates a stooshie.

I agree.

LenaLamont · 01/04/2024 09:38

@BettyFilous - I don’t believe it was a disciplinary. It was an upheld complaint to the BBC about a totally bullshit breach of impartiality.

Madcats · 01/04/2024 09:47

I'm imaging the queues of men, queuing outside the sex shop and mushroom seller to file their reams of perceived NCHI reports.

I found it telling that the police union rep confessed that he hadn't had time to do his 2 hours of training.

borntobequiet · 01/04/2024 09:49

Reminded me of why I used to have a high regard for Peter Tatchell.
JW excellent in his questioning. Scottish government minister evasive and wriggly in her answers.

FrancescaContini · 01/04/2024 09:49

Justin is a breath of fresh air. The fact that the new Act lists “gender identity” (whatever the hell that may be) and not “biological sex” is mind boggling.

(It can’t just be a coincidence that the young man in the Hate Hurts ad upthread looks at first glance like Hitler.)

Villagetoraiseachild · 01/04/2024 09:51

Basically, the woman interviewed was saying, it's up to the police to interpret, based on their two hour training . Shambolic. Justin trying to drill down into specifics, not much forthcoming.

ArabellaScott · 01/04/2024 09:51

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/04/2024 09:00

Who is the defender?

Siobhan Brown, MSP, I believe.

Bruisername · 01/04/2024 09:52

What time, roughly, was it?

ArabellaScott · 01/04/2024 09:53

Brown is Minister for Community Safety, reports to Justice Secretary, so should have a grasp of the issue.
