Planet Fitness Trans Saga

Planet Fitness is a franchisor with 2.5k gyms in North America. A woman entered her local gym in Alaska to find a man standing in front of the mirror shaving. A 12 year old girl in a towel was sitting in the corner. The woman confronted the man who said he was LGBTQ and could be there. She asked him to leave and he refused. She took his photo (he was fully dressed with shirt hair and looks exactly like any other bloke) and complained to the front desk, who did nothing. She has now had her membership canceled and she has been reported for taking a photo of a member which is against the rules.
She said she is going to report his presence to police.

Planet Fitness assist trans client in women's locker room

Patricia Silva, who was banned from Planet Fitness after posting about a trans woman shaving in the female locker room, said that person now has an employee escort to use the facilities.

What you don't do is start harassing the TW, taking photos in the changing room, shouting at the staff (as she admits on her own posts) and rant about pedos on Facebook.

Why not?

Why worry about his comfort? He’s not worrying about the comfort of the 12 year old. Why are you advocating for the woman who stood up for her to do so only in a people pleasing way, polite way, lest she offends?

Fuck that. He should feel uncomfortable. And the more men expect women to do this type of thing if they dare set foot in the ladies, the better. Let there be no expectation that women will be cowed into acquiescence and appeasement.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 24/03/2024 22:01

The man said he was LGBTQ. No posters referred to the man as trans until you did.

We all know he's a man. And we see what you're doing.

Except the OP did. In the very title of the thread..

Because whether we like it or not, he was allowed to be there. Now she's been banned from the gym and had a police report filed against her. There are better ways of doing things.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 24/03/2024 22:04

It refers to the trans saga. He identifies as trans as his right to be there. No one else did. Until you. You can split hairs all you like.

I'm not the one splitting hairs. If you have an issue with this being about trans then you need to take it up with the OP who decided the title.

Actually I disagree. If she'd gone about this quietly nobody would have heard about it. She might consider the absolutely massive financial kicking Planet Fitness are getting worth the police record. I think I would.

And if she’d been meek and polite neither he not the hun would have got the $400m message that this isn’t ok and won’t be stood for. No matter what their shitty rules say.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 24/03/2024 22:08

Would she have made the news and highlighted this absurdity if she had gone with what you suggested? Fuck 'company policy' when it comes at the expense of the safety and wellbeing of women and children.

Gym, not hun. Thanks spellcheck…

People like him give actual trans people a bad name. I know several trans people and the last thing they want is to draw attention to their trans status. They absolutely would not put themselves in a situation like that.

That man is not a trans woman and that is the whole problem with self id.

Dumbo12 · 24/03/2024 22:14

A man, who needed to shave, dressed in stereotypically male clothing, was in a room with a partially clothed female child. This was seen by an adult human female, who ensured that she had incontrovertible evidence of his presence. She then took that evidence to the staff of the business, who told her that the man identified as LGBTQ and therefore was allowed to be in the female changing room. Presumably only identifying as the T part of the above would have allowed him to access that area. The woman was then sufficiently incensed that she felt the need to publicise this event. I can not see how else she could have publicised this bizarre set of circumstances.

What would an 'actual' trans person do?

Absolutely. We are so done with being kind, following process, asking for things to be reviewed and so on. It’s how we get fobbed off again and again by organisations that don’t want to face up to the implications of their policies, in the name of “inclusivity”.

Fuck that. Shit like this needs to be dragged out into the press.

Unfortunately for this case, he is a transwoman if he says he is. What is it that makes you think he might not be a "genuine " transwoman?

How can anyone tell?

There are lots of TW who very stridently demand the right to use women's facilities. And, as trans (and gender generally) is just a feeling in people's heads, there is no way to differentiate.

That's why these facilities must be segregated by sex, not gender feelz.

Let me guess: the better way is for women to #BeKind and shut up?

Yep, when a male chooses to shower with a naked 12 year old, the problem is the way that a woman draws attention to this, and not the male's actions. Gotcha. As long as we're all clear that women are always in the wrong, and that males can do what the fuck they like, all's good.

No, I already posted earlier in the thread explaining this so I'm not going to repeat myself, but there's no need to #bekind and shut up.

So tell us exactly how the woman should have handled it.

Because, until you do, you're just another of the tedious misogynist chorus on SM, who exist only to tell women, "You're doing it wrong", whatever they do and however they do it.

AlohaOptima · 24/03/2024 23:02

The trans people I know (and I don’t know all trans people, hence why I pointed out the ones I know) just want to get on with living in the gender they feel they are. They wouldn’t want to be clocked so wouldn’t put themself in that position. They don’t want to draw attention to themselves.

If this person was doing a male activity (shaving) dressed in typical male clothing, with no attempt to pass as female then I think it is safe to assume that they were being disingenuous and using self ID as a loop hole to access a space they have no business being in.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 24/03/2024 23:02

First, report to staff in the gym. Then if they say he's allowed, ask to see the policy. If she doesn't like the policy, complain to management / head office. Raise awareness in a constructive and evidence-based manner.

What you don't do is start harassing the TW, taking photos in the changing room, shouting at the staff (as she admits on her own posts) and rant about pedos on Facebook.

Bullcrap. You do whatever it takes to bring maximum shame and financial misfortune on the company who enables this shit.

So, if the male had been wearing a skirt and wig, it would have been fine for him to change in front of a 12 year old girl?

While you're thinking that through, maybe have a look at the percentage of incarcerated TW who are sex offenders (HM Prison Service figures).

I don't see why that's a safe assumption at all. Gender identity has nothing to do with superficialities like clothes and shaving: if he claims to be a transwoman then he's a transwoman, and it's transphobic to suggest otherwise.

No you haven't, because the woman tried the things you suggested, and got nowhere. She only started getting angry (rightly!) when they gaslit her and refused to act.

So what would you have done then?
