“Trans treatment waiting list a ‘death sentence’”

While the title of the thread is the main-page headline on the BBC website, the actual article is - rather less dramatically - titled Transgender patients could face years-long wait for NHS treatment.

It is so grossly offensive to suggest not getting cross sex hormones [paid for by the NHS] = fatal. There absolutely are delays in care that are fatal: people are (for example) dying of cancer, from [complications of] anorexia nervosa, & of treatable cardiac issues.

That coroners are legitimising this idea is ridiculous. In one case, the individual had accessed private care.

The suicides are of course tragic, but they show what’s needed is more investment in mental health services. Not to push the - completely false & irresponsible - narrative that trans people are doomed to die while waiting for treatment.

Mental health care is the issue here, not the actual surgery. They must have forgotten to report on that

HoneyButterPopcorn · 20/03/2024 08:00

My aunt has a brain tumour and was on a waiting list - she died waiting.

some people will never be happy in their own skin - they will never look in the mirror and be happy. Maybe this needs to be addressed.

Isn't the suicide rate at least as bad after transition? On that analysis, the "treatment" itself is also a death sentence.

I posted a Californian study here (hopefully it goes to the correct post).

Sorry for your aunt and you 💐. Having spent a lot of time in paediatric neurology wards it is awful disease. There is not enough being done for brain diseases and injuries. And very little money for counselling or rehabilitation.

I'm so sorry to learn of the outcome for your aunt.

Family friends had a young child who needed palliative surgery. Not surgery that would cure the problem but would definitely have reduced the pain and associated distress.

No surgery.

I can't think of how many people I hear of who have delays for cancer that might well have been curative if treatment had happened when needed rather than delayed and progressed beyond that stage.

If you strip away the outrageous activist hyperbole, I think this buried at the bottom of the article is the real news:

'"In 2024/25 the NHS will launch a timely review of the adult service specifications through a process of engagement with professional bodies, clinicians and academics, and patients and the public."

Oh that's interesting news.

Literal violence
Genocide
Killing our trans siblings
Death sentence

People are dying waiting for life saving treatment/surgery and somehow waiting for the NHS to fund a chosen lifestyle is a 'death sentence'. It gets more batshit crazy every day.

This will ramp up as harms from genderism are shown

They will start to demonstrate that this is a cult the more they continue with that shit....

Most of the media also seem remarkably uncurious about one of the most obvious points that would surely strike the proverbial visitor from Mars: why this sudden explosion in demand now? Where were all the 'trans kids' when old gits like me were at school? Or even later? The TRA's lame claims that 'they've always been there but brutally suppressed', 'Joan of Arc' etc, really don't stand much scrutiny. And yet this obvious fact seems very under-discussed.

Helleofabore · 20/03/2024 09:32

I can imagine there will be panic once the adult service starts to be assessed. I look forward to reading all the evidence that supports the NHs providing hormones and surgeries for adults. I suspect that the fact that suicide rates are not improved in adults receiving such treatments and that mental health studies have shown little evidence of improvement, that the services offerred to adults will also have to change.

OldCrone · 20/03/2024 09:38

The TRA's lame claims that 'they've always been there but brutally suppressed', 'Joan of Arc' etc, really don't stand much scrutiny.

If that were true, they'd be able to point to the large numbers of late-transitioning women who were prevented from doing so when they were younger.

Instead Mumsnet is full of women who look at the teenage girls who identify as trans, and think how similar we were to them when younger. But instead of going for a later-life transition we're all pointing out the flaws in the ideology.

I'm sure there were kids with gender dysphoria who suppressed it. But the vast majority were not the suicidal sort. Living with mild gender dysphoria is not necessarily all that big a deal and probably quite common.

Part of the problem is that we still try to treat gender dysphoria as we did twenty years ago when it had to be really, really bad for people to even admit to feeling it. So we've got treatments that were designed for the worst cases being used on a whole host of much milder ones. Old scientific data from a very different set of patients is used as justification for everything they're doing.

Of course social contagion is part of it too. People experiencing gender dysphoria when previously the thought would never have occurred to them.

Edited

This is spot on. If being trans was like being gay then we'd have roughly the same number of male and female people in each age group identifying as trans.

Why have none of the charities like Stonewall and Mermaids spent any of their millions on research to see why we have a load of middle aged men transitioning and a load of teenage girls being uncomfortable with their female bodies?

Has anyone even done a sex segregated survey on the numbers?

ButterflyTulips · 20/03/2024 10:12

Yes there isn't so much news about middle aged women transitioning is there.

Im still concerned by the numbers of autistic girls who are understandsbly finding puberty/being a teen girl in this world tricky and looking for identity in trans 😔. I am really concerned it's basically abusive to a vulnerable demographic. But to say anything invites accusations of bigotry.

How terrible. I'm so sorry.

We are a 21st-century, developed society. This is inexcusable.

I'm wanting to know where the transmen in their 60s were in that article.

NotBadConsidering · 20/03/2024 10:35

The question should be why are people spending so much time on a waiting list for therapy that doesn’t help instead of getting the mental health support they actually need? The solution is redirection to appropriate services, not quickening this waiting list.

Stratos72 · 20/03/2024 11:01

I still can't believe there are so-called medical professionals that actually subscribe to trans ideology. The whole thing is a subversion of facts in favour of 'feelings'.

NitroNine · 20/03/2024 11:08

@HoneyButterPopcorn

I’m so sorry for your loss 💐

I’ve been waiting longer than 5 years for one treatment I need & have been on the waiting list for something else for almost 4 years. In my case it is very painful & I’m basically irreversibly damaging bits of me while I wait. Far from ideal, but I’d never be so crass as to suggest it’s anything more/worse.
