“Trans treatment waiting list a ‘death sentence’”

While the title of the thread is the main-page headline on the BBC website, the actual article is - rather less dramatically - titled Transgender patients could face years-long wait for NHS treatment.

It is so grossly offensive to suggest not getting cross sex hormones [paid for by the NHS] = fatal. There absolutely are delays in care that are fatal: people are (for example) dying of cancer, from [complications of] anorexia nervosa, & of treatable cardiac issues.

That coroners are legitimising this idea is ridiculous. In one case, the individual had accessed private care.

The suicides are of course tragic, but they show what’s needed is more investment in mental health services. Not to push the - completely false & irresponsible - narrative that trans people are doomed to die while waiting for treatment.

And yes, the withered flower crushing actually happened.

The main reason for the extremely long wait lists is that the services cannot recruit nor retain enough clinical staff.

This is because most medical and mental health professionals have spent many years in education and incurred lots of expense in doing so. They want to work in fields with evidenced based care, where patients come in with a symptom list and the HCP can fully assess and identify the problem from a range of differential diagnosis.
People presenting to a GIC in 2024 are there because they’ve already self-diagnosed as having a transgender identity. There is no space for thoughtful and diligent clinicians to fully exercise their hard earned expertise, they are there to give the illusion that the trans funnel is being adequately gate-kept.

There are currently only 4 NHS surgeons who are willing to flay a healthy penis and fashion a pseudo vagina from the skin. One is close to retirement (another died recently and one retired and they are not being replaced at the rate they are being lost). The more the bonkers-beliefs behind WPATH are known, the less likely qualified urological surgeons are going to want to take up this caseload.

You can’t force highly educated professionals into jobs they don’t want to do - there are plenty of non GIC related vacancies for doctors and psychologists in the NHS and beyond.

The new pilot services try to get around this by employing non-clinicians to do all the intake and ongoing pathway appointments with prescriptions and surgical referrals overseen by doctors who are spreading themselves way too thin for such a huge, complex and needy caseload. NHS England keeps chucking cash at the waiting lists but the whole thing is going to collapse eventually.

Yes. I believe Sandyford in Glasgow are struggling to recruit. Who knew medics wouldn't be queuing up to book in teenagers for surgeries based on flimsy/scant evidence.

I reckon there's a decent business opportunity in selling affordable wigs with an added service of showing people how to wear them properly.

ArabellaScott · 20/03/2024 19:53

An orchid?

'Orchid' has an interesting etymology, of course.

And, given the way the wind is blowing, who in their right mind would want to risk finding themselves dragged into an enquiry or accused of doing harm? You’d have to be a die-hard gender ideologist to think of pursing this clinical avenue.

Haha yes I wanted to quote the picture of a man crushing an orchid and refer to the obvious analogy the BBC are trying to portray but I fear it's a reportable offence and I'll get my post deleted.

That sounds like bollocks to me.

Which is why Action for Trans Health had a point - they wanted trans people to get training in how to operate on each other so they were no longer reliant on medically-trained surgeons.

It does make sense as a wish - if your group requires a certain body modification, it may well not be sustainable if you rely on outsiders to do it.

(I can imagine similar calls in communities conducting FGM, for example...)

The downside is the practicality - the belief that what they're doing is so simple it's a "technician" type job that doesn't require the level of training medical surgeons currently have.

ArabellaScott · 21/03/2024 06:47

That's the first time I've heard anyone suggest Action for Trans Health had a point. I suppose they had lots of points. They were all just utterly insane.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 21/03/2024 09:29

Trans people have been operating in each other for a while. See reduxx’s work into the eunuch files. But let your breakfast go down a bit first.

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2024 09:49

The BBC wrote an article saying it was a death sentence on the basis of one death and someone else feeling depressed.

How does this differ from other areas of health care with long waiting lists? Why does this one get highlighted specially? This isn't a group without a voice.

CantDealwithChristmas · 21/03/2024 10:48

Can't believe they have the gall to describe the waiting list as a 'death sentence' when WPATH have just been exposed as knowing about links between cross-sex hormones and cancer - and when the gruesome and heartbreaking dangers of phalloplasty and vaginoplasty (septic infection being reported by some patients) is being exposed.

In that sense I would describe the long wait time, not as a death sentence, but as a welcome stay of execution.

I just saw this too. Four middle-aged people with five o'clock shadows in heavy make up with flowery tops and over styled hair. Numerous shots of their glittery nails and eyeshadow. There were literally violins playing in the background.

It was almost like a parody.

I do hope viewers wonder why the BBC can't find some middle-aged women in fleeces and work trousers with sad un-made up faces to interview about waiting for NHS gender treatment.

That actually sounds excellent in its awfulness Grin

FriedGold32 · 21/03/2024 11:05

I want to see some evidence for where this eternal suicide wave of trans children and adults was in the 1970s, in the 1820s, in the 1540s.

As we are often told, trans people have always existed, indeed it is innate in humans apparently, but synthetic hormones and surgery has only been available very recently so presumably they've all been killing themselves en masse prior to that. Should be easy to pinpoint the huge numbers of trans suicides during the First World War and the Great Depression and the French Revolution if you know where to look. Show me the numbers.

FrancescaContini · 21/03/2024 11:17

I’ve often wondered this, too @FriedGold32

Froodwithatowel · 21/03/2024 12:44

Think back to your secondary school days.

Where was the huge swell of gender distressed friends desperate to transition and unable to?

FrancescaContini · 21/03/2024 12:51

Hmmm. Nobody I recall. Wonder why 🧐

duc748 · 21/03/2024 12:53

There wasn't. But there was punks, goths, teddy boys...

BBC South Today feature can be seen here until 6.57pm tomorrow (Thursday 21st), from about 1 minute in:

Orchid crushing at 4:10.

Finally watched this. The sad music and wistful gazing (and crushing) of flowers for the transwomen and then matter-of-fact reporting about cancer patients was quite a stark contrast!

The withered orchid crushing scene was comical, reminded me of Brass Eye 😂

This is desperate doubling down by the BBC, no doubt pushed by the activists in their ranks and those others who have influence there.
