Despite all the recent WPATH revelations and everythign else we now know Angela Eagle has just tweeted that the next Labour government will:

  • Legislate for a trans-inclusive conversion therapy ban
  • Make anti-LGBT+ hate crime an aggravated offence *Modernise Gender Recognition processes
  • Appoint an international LGBT+ envoy

Interesting @FKAT Did they say how?
50% is a bold statement. But why not 100%? 🤔

StaunchMomma · 08/03/2024 11:49

Depends on a voter's priorities.

I would honestly rather have the country in a better position than to have an MP in power who says men can't be women, right now. The state of the NHS/education etc is more important for me, currently.

I will be voting Labour.

Which specific policies are you relying on from Labour?

Indeed.

I suspect it can only be achieved by changing the defining criteria. I want to make some joke here about some forms of violence identifying differently but can't quite manage it.

senua · 08/03/2024 12:04

Anyway I got a letter from Labour today promising that they would cut VAWG by 50%.
Again, it's a meaningless 'promise' if they don't properly define W&G.

ArabellaScott · 08/03/2024 12:05

BaronMunchausen · 08/03/2024 11:52

What specific Labour policies are you looking at that will improve education and the NHS?
I haven't seen very much to date that distinguishes Labour from the Tories, other than different names and colours. As I understand it, Labour has explicitly promised to follow Jeremy Hunt’s public spending plans.

This is what I'm interested in. I hear repeated assertions that Labour will be 'better' often without any detail on what policies the poster is referring to.

I genuinely would like to hear more on Labour's policies that will improve matters on these and other issues.

I'd like them to define 'violence' too.

Amazing. Did they have any info on how they would do this?

duc748 · 08/03/2024 12:13

Curfews? 😛

Froodwithatowel · 08/03/2024 12:13

I'd imagine by redefining VAWG.

Change the words around, the reality disappears, no effort or actually doing anything is required and life is fab. Whoo hoo.

Giggorata · 08/03/2024 12:14

Arguing about whether red or blue (green, orange, pink)is a distraction from the issue.:
There isn't one of the larger political parties , that are likely to gain a majority or effective sway, that are pro women and can be trusted to uphold our rights and prioritise our safety and well being.

Labour/Tories/other - same man, different hat.

No, no detail. I'm guessing they will do it by asking men nicely not to be violent to ladies.

This campaign was very effective in London where we now have 0 violence against women and if you don't believe me ask the Met Police who are trustworthy enforcers of this.

No details? Then WTAF is the point?

They may as well promise to cure cancer, eradicate world hunger and Make Everyone Jolly Happy.

ArabellaScott · 08/03/2024 12:26

Oh, I see. They did.

TBF @ArabellaScott the 'Jolly' policies were largely Boris' shtick.

Gotta be different than the nasty tories after all. Nothing Jolly To Be Seen Here.

ArabellaScott · 08/03/2024 12:27

100% not satire, btw. You can click the link.

ArabellaScott · 08/03/2024 12:27

Although rumours that that is the full Labour manifesto may be exaggerated.

Spendonsend · 08/03/2024 12:30

I think its a bit unfair to drill down into manifestos that havent actually been released.

People are basing their view on the conservatives on what has been like over the last 14 years and assuming more of the same

They are basing their view on labour on the previous labour governments, their performance in opposition, what the press is saying, and what labour are saying.

Labour have a list of 5 missions and have paddded them out a little bit. But the detail isnt there. If you look at their website they do expand on how they will "halve violence against women and girls'

The conservaties also have 5 priorities like halving inflation, growing the economy, reducing debt, cutting waiting lists and stopping boats. These arent padded out either.

Peskysquirrel · 08/03/2024 12:30

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has today launched a major new campaign to empower men and boys to say ‘Maaate’ to their mates as a means of challenging sexism and misogyny in society.

Is this FOR REAL???
To help men find the words to tackle sexist or misogynistic language - really?
Howabout they just say "that's really sexist" "that's really misogynistic" "that's out of order"?
Just call it out for what it is!

My Labour candidate has sent me two leaflets this week (1 x 2 pages of A4, 1 x 8 pages of A5).

The crime section ends with "Labour has a plan to halve violence against women and girls." Nothing else. Is it too much to expect to have some detail or a link?

How is it 'unfair' to expect them to outline this plan?

I'm also basing my view of Labour on how they have run London for 8 years, run Wales for 2 decades and run their local authorities - one of which (Birmingham) is on the verge of collapse partly because of the millions it spent fighting unsuccessfully a case of discrimination against its women workers.

ArabellaScott · 08/03/2024 12:44

https://labour.org.uk/missions/safe-streets/

'Tackling violence against women and girls. Labour will halve levels of violence against women and girls within a decade because everyone has the right to live free from fear.
We will introduce new specialist domestic abuse workers in 999 control rooms and put specialist rape investigation units in every force across England and Wales – so that early opportunities for prevention and protection are not missed.
We’ll require police forces to target dangerous repeat offenders with the tactics and tools normally reserved for counter-terror and serious organised crime investigations, to get serious perpetrators off our streets. And we’ll put specialists in the court system to support rape and domestic abuse victims and ensure that justice is done.'

This is all I can find.

Before you continue splash – The Labour Party

Before you continue… We have to show you something important: Ignore the polls. Outspending Labour by millions will be what gets the Tories over the line and into government for another five years. Can you help us close the gap?

I agree. But that does mean it's a bit pointless even discussing either party until the manifestos are released.

I heard that described elsewhere and I thought it must be at least partially exaggerated! It isn't Grin

ArabellaScott · 08/03/2024 12:45

And that's assuming that either party sticks to their manifesto.
