How the metro can put out this tweet which effectively suggests a woman shouldn't be allowed to speak is beyond me. Shocked but not surprised. Comments are heartening though, as is the ratio.

But I don't see why we can't create safe zones for transgender people at the same time as protecting women.

What don't think GC women have been shouting for for ages? The trans lobby don't want this.

No, I get this. That's why I think prisons are the best place to trial and show that third spaces are the way forward to protect and respect all relevant parties.

Well out in the non-prison world transpeople are more likely to be victims of violent crime than the rest of us - a 2017 study in the US put it at four times more likely.

I am assuming that vulnerability extends to the prison environment.

I don't believe biological men should be in women's single sex spaces.

But I don't see why we can't create safe zones for transgender people at the same time as protecting women.

Can you link that study up please.

But in the UK it was rejected. An estate was separated out, and made ready and it was rejected by extreme trans activists I believe

I would love to see a campaign to make all male spaces more welcoming and accommodating of all male people. Why isn’t this happening?

Maybe our male posters can tell us why?

But if they do that, females will start wanting to occupy those nice welcoming male spaces too.

Oh no. Wait. No we won’t.

Helleofabore · 27/02/2024 21:12

Yeah. No we won’t

Don’t know if it’s the same study the poster had in kind but the analysis I’ve come across on this suggests the effect of being “transgender” is negated when you’d control for whether or the individual is involved in prostitution.

A bit like 3rd space or unisex toilets / changing areas. Also rejected by trans women (men) reps

Possibly because there is no truth that they are not?

From memory all of the attacks that have involved trans women and girls have bene them attacking women and girls in the women's toilets.

Skewing crime statistics is dangerous. The sex-based statistics show very clearly exactly who is a threat to who. If these are manipulated to reflect 'gender identity' then the distinction between the sex class which represents a clear and lethal threat to the other sex class, with two women murdered at the hands of men per week, then this dinstinction is eroded. This potentially puts the more vulnerable sex class at even greater risk at the hands of the dominant one.

As if men ever needed more of a green light to harm women. The crime of rape is de facto legal as it is.

Women's safety matters not a jot to these misogynists.

Thank you for articulating this so well! I have been trying to formulate this point!

Being as mis-gendering almost always makes up part of these studies I would like to now the criteria.

But why do extreme trans activists get to make the decision for all transprisoners present and future?

But I do accept PP point about other vulnerable male prisoners too. The prison system needs a lot of overhauling to deal with how we treat prisoners and try to balance punishment vs rehabilitation.

Are there any current trans men who have wanted to be placed in men's prisons?

The issue is that from the little that I have read they are listed as trans people so it is unclear as to whether their are any transmen in male prisons.

As to why the extremists get to dominate the discussion so much, IMO it has to do with that they have taken over established charities that gave them a foot in the door.

Thanks. I will have a look in the morning when I have access to to laptop.

I am very interested in how they measure this. But straight off I see it is self reported surveys. I will see if I can see the questions . Considering that here in the Uk, ‘misgendering’ is considered domestic abuse, I need to evaluate the collection mechanic for this survey. I am now highly sceptical of this kind of study.

Thank you though. I look forward to reading it when I am off my phone.

I think it does reference another report which also looked into police reports and social services data. But only ten states in the US include gender identity in their hate crime laws so it's hard to get a picture of the whole country in terms of what is driving stats on violence against transpeople.

As someone else pointed out, given that this is self reported, words/migendering may be considered assault by some individuals.

Additionally the higher rates possibly relate to involvement in the sex industry.

That is definitely a factor - there's also a lot more research to be done in the US on how race impacts these statistics.

There was also a 2005 study that LGBT people are more likely to have been sexually assaulted in childhood than heterosexual and non-transgender children, but it was unconcluded on whether that perpetrators were reacting to some sort of gender-related cue which caused the assault - whether gender or sexual preference insecurity made the children more vulnerable, or if it was to 'teach them a lesson".

Absolutely - that's why prisons are a good place to start showing how third spaces protect and respect all parties.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 27/02/2024 21:47

In the overall prison population, 96% are male. The number of the remaining 4% who identify as trans is a little tricky to count because the Ministry of Justice figures are rather opaquely expressed - and exclude anyone with a GRC. But as best I can tell from the 2022 report there were 43 transmen in prison (and 11 people with a GRC whose sex and gender are not given, but they are most likely to be transwomen).

They are never held in the male estate, whether they want to be or not. I believe it was tried once, and went exactly as badly as you'd expect.

Eyesofdisarray · 27/02/2024 21:56

Oh not Dadjoke again!! What is your skin in the game???
And bloody Cisgender again- offensive and unnecessary.
Posters have pointed it out and still TRAs persist. I do not know what goes on in their heads.
This latest perp is not a woman and will never be a woman. Not even partly. Or a little teeny tiny miniscule microscopic bit.
I prefer the use of transwoman to trans woman; it's not describing a type of woman FFS

IW should be ashamed of that tweet.
Where is the concern for the young victim in this?
Even JF expressed concern for the cat (a statement I was quite shocked at)

I'm glad to hear that transmen are never placed in the male estate. Horrifying thought.

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2024 22:07

Another prison officer said there is a dedicated trans wing at one of the prisons. It's practically unused because nobody wants to be transferred there (like the recent trans-only swimming competition that was cancelled because not 1 competitor entered).

Excuse me for asking, but why are they being given a choice whether to go there or not?! It's prison not a hotel.
