I'm very confused as to how it would make the slightest difference whether a convicted paedophile changed their legal gender or not.

Because it's harder to monitor them if they "change sex" and get a completely different identity.

I'm not sure what mechanisms are in place for that situation, but if they aren't sufficient they could certainly be made to be so without changing the law on self id.

And you don't have to change your gender to change your name.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 12:47

In the U.K. you get a completely different identity in every way. It's not just a change of name.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 12:49

I imagine they regard you, a middle aged British woman, very much the same as they would regard any other middle aged British woman @PP82

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 12:56

You get:

New documents in your new identity
New birth certificate lying that you were born female (or male for FTM)
Special DBS process that is questionably not as robust
New NHS number
The ability to get people in authority prosecuted (even jailed) for "outing" you as not a woman

Being in a position of trust and authority is not the same as sharing a changing room or toilet. Obviously.

My question though was not about changing rooms specifically, though a known paedophile in a ladies’ public lavatory in a supermarket with a child is an obvious concern ( it has happened in the U.K.);

or about how a paedophile transwoman can gain the trust of a child to get into ‘her’ car, because the child thinks a woman is safe, (after which the child is kidnapped and sexually abused for days as happened in Scotland)

  • it is particularly a concern that a change of identity, name and looks can be used to hide past crimes and aid access to an enhanced opportunity for more criminal activity. So it is pretty obvious that there should be no self ID for criminals.

I wonder if Spain is also doing what we do here and recording Machismo crimes on the women’s crime list?

I can assure you Brits Abroad lager lout is very far from the mental image I had.

Hardly anyone in Spain cares about your luxury beliefs and identity politics. They are a pretty earthy people, and certainly aren't confused about what a woman is. As a pp said, it's a sexist society.

Jesus. What an insulting, patronising and misinformed set of generalisations. 'Earthy people.' What does that mean? Have you ever even been here?

Spain is split on these issues, like everywhere is in the current political climate. People opposed to gender self ID said it would boost the Vox vote and usher in a PP/Vox government. In fact the Vox vote plummeted and we held on to our progressive coalition.

There is still sexism in Spanish society of course, but as a woman my legal rights are far better protected here in all sorts of ways.

You clearly don't read posts properly. I said I've lived there.

I have close family there. I visit several times a year. I speak fluent Spanish. I'm quite knowledgeable about the country, its culture, history and politics. I love the country, but it's pretty sexist. You have also made patronising generalisations on this thread.

Because rejecting gender identity politics came together with other, less palatable things.

No one would deny that sexism still runs through Spanish society, but things are moving in the right direction, and lots of positive things have been happening recently, particularly under the current government.

Unlike the UK, which has gone back 150 years in the last 14.

Only one person said they would have to hold their noses at 'other Brits'.

Everyone on mumsnet thinks they are middle aged when they hit 35. It's tragic.

Anyway, who cares. I don't care how others regard me, only that I have the rights and status of a Spanish citizen.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 13:10

I'm not sure why you keep making all these childish jibes at other women then. I'm sure they care as much about what you think as you do about what they do.

PP82 · 22/02/2024 13:11

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 13:09

Quite.

Fair play. Can't deny that. But I wouldn't want to be anywhere near the type of people I moved abroad to get away from.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 13:11

You're in your 40s. So am I. We are both middle aged. It's just life. As you say, who cares.

40s ceased to be middle aged at least 20 years ago. But if you want to self identify as middle aged, that's up to you.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 13:14

It was pretty nasty what you said about the pp who said she wasn't going to go to Spain, and given that you don't have any clue about who she is, unfounded. I merely pointed out that the Spanish probably see you in the same way.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 13:15

It's literally middle aged for the average lifespan Grin

I just said no one in Spain would care about one less British tourist. That's literally all I said. Everything else is your projection.

ScrollingLeaves · 22/02/2024 13:18

As Spain has such a fixed idea about masculinity it may mean there more transvestites and transwomen because of there being less place in n society for more feminine males.

Similarly, even years ago in Italy, I remember seeing many glamorous transvestites out at night.

It would be interesting to know more.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 13:19

Update.
Both patries are MtF trans.
SPAIN: Trans-Identified Male Sentenced To Six Months In Prison After Making “Transphobic” Comments Towards Another Trans-Identified Male For Not Having Genital Surgery

YY. As @AlisonDonut said earlier, the interesting thing is that the "hate criminal" was more affirmed in their gender identity as a "woman" than the other male, whose maleness was the point of the case, because people originally thought the person being prosecuted was female because there was no mention of them being "trans".

Middle aged has never meant the mid point of life. Never.

It is the period preceding old age. When average life expectancy was early 60s, you weren't considered middle aged at 30.

You're as literal about age as you are about gender.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/02/2024 13:21

Don't be disingenuous @PP82

"I'm sure the Spanish will be devastated not to have one more English tourist this summer. English tourists are their favourite, dontcha know?"
