IW taking advantage of decent people who likely won't sue out of sympathy for Brianna's poor family and friends. Perhaps JKR's legal team could do something discreet?

ace249 · 20/12/2023 18:08

Awful tragic news story, just heartbreaking.

India Willoughby has listed a number of celebrities, including JK Rowling, accusing them of helping to kill Brianna. That's massively defamatory, JK surely has to respond to this? Shocking.

PronounssheRa · 20/12/2023 18:10

Look at that Guardian piece. Police saying it wasn't a transphobic crime "caused uproar" in a community that "suspected" it must have been and were "angry" the police discounted it so quickly.

At the start of the trial jurors had to complete a questionnaire part of which was asking about attendance at vigils etc to rule out out potential jurors. The court and CPS were very alert to the risk of significant bias in some people.

Gracious comment from Brianna's mother

This was such a sick and senseless murder.
I personally think that those two young people responsible should be named and shamed. They’ll probably be granted anonymity for life and I can’t for the life of me understand why they should be protected.

Yes it’s male arrogance and abusive nature writ large

ace249 · 20/12/2023 18:16

I've wondered for some time if they actively want to be sued by JK. They keep doing shout outs to JK, massive attention seeking stuff with deliberately provocative remarks designed to get a response

Jf20 · 20/12/2023 18:17

I was surprised to learn both culprits are autistic and the boy has selective mutism. I do wonder how that will impact the sentencing, if at all.

thr whole thing is one of the most disturbing, sad , devastating things I’ve heard, and my heart went out to Brianna’s mother as she made her statement.

I wonder. The judge is making an announcement about reporting restrictions tomorrow. Presumably whether they will be named? I know the onus is on the press to put forward a case for naming juvenile offenders, and Judge Yip would have to respond. Not sure if restrictions would be waived for any other reason?

PictureOfAPig · 20/12/2023 18:19

Such a terrible case. Rest in peace, Brianna.

I can’t remember off the top of my head, but wasn’t the twilight killers have some form of autism in there? That one sticks in my head because it’s my local town

I’m not sure to be honest.

the bbc didn’t say how well the culprits functioned, just simply the reporter said both children had autism and the boy selective mutism. Clearly they will be locked away for a very long time, just I wonder where or how or if it impacts.

I don’t think it did with Jeffrey dahmer, who had Asperger’s.

GotMooMilk · 20/12/2023 18:27

The girl was found to have traits of autism not a full diagnosis. Clearly she is severely mentally unwell and disturbed. Horrific case

Sisterpita · 20/12/2023 18:37

Awful case, I feel
so sorry for Brianna’s family.

The transphobic comments exchanged by the killers are chilling. Questioning gender and ideology is always important, but we surely can't deny that saying "I want to see if it screams like a man or a girl" and "I just want to see what size dick it has" is transphobia. Hatred of Brianna because of her being transgender that led to her being dehumanised in the killers' eyes.

Sounds like the Police and Legal professionals involved believe it’s the other way around. So X and Y got obsessed with the idea of murdering a peer, and the transphobic commentary was their way of dehumanizing their victim and psyching themselves up to go through with it. If they’d gone along with a different victim on their list then they’d have picked on some other aspect of that person. It’s still a horrific cold blooded murder, obviously, and the comments are still unacceptable.

Scorchio84 · 20/12/2023 18:40

Another murder of a child by children, I hadn't heard of this murder before today but it reminded me of a (fairly recent) case from over here, Ana Kriegel, who was also lured to her gruesome death by two equally young children from her school. They too had planned & exchanged texts about where & how, it just doesn't make sense how children can have this level of hatred & psychopathy & intent towards another human being, my mind can't make any sense of this

PonyPatter44 · 20/12/2023 18:41

I think this is the first murder of a trans person in YEARS. I can only think the last one before poor Brianna was Destiny Lauren, who was murdered in 2011. That poor kid must have been so, so frightened in the park. I choked up listening to her mum outside the court.

Thank you for not trying to pretend transphobia isn't transphobia. Even if you don't think it was a direct contributing factor, you are acknowledging that it is real and in evidence in Boy Y's comments.

The fact that this child was Trans isn't even the point, they had a list of a few potential targets, one of which chnaged his plans the day he was meant to meet up with these two psychos, so if it wasn't Brianna it would have been someone else

This is what the boy said when questioned by the police:

In his police interview, Boy Y was asked why in messages he had referred to Brianna as 'it'.
He said that he would make jokes about 'gayness' with his friends but he didn't actually care if anyone was gay or not.

The boy doesn't even seem from this to have differentiated between being gay and being trans. The pairs' initial intended victim was a boy. The other potential victims listed were also boys.

Stop trying to use the murder of a child to shore up your ideology.

JKR's legal team seem to be the epitome of discreetness. In other cases where she's been libelled, she has simply asked for an apology, I think, rather than damages.* Of course, if a tweet is very clearly and unequivocally defamatory (as it is in this case), there is very little point in trying to defend it all the way to court, not only because you'd be bound to lose but because you could never afford the legal representation required to defend yourself against someone who has limitless sums to spend on lawyers.

India is an extraordinarily stupid as well as unlikeable person, and I kind of hope for once that JKR does sue.
