I'm surprised that no one seems to be talking about how Brianna's ASD and ADHD diagnoses made her incredibly vulnerable. Anxiety, social struggles and difficulty making friends, being 'too' trusting, not recognising people's ulterior motives ,being quite innocent and naive, really wanting to make friends......

To me these things made her an easy target and are much more relevant than her being trans.

There is an interesting discussion in another thread:
Is there such a thing as a GC Autism support charity?

The answer seems to be no, with the exception of a Facebook group, as all the autism agencies are promoting the idea that many autistic people are trans, rather than exploring the idea that their autism may make them vulnerable to thinking they are. There is also a link in this same thread to a detransitioned young woman who had a late diagnosis of autism, who explains how this vulnerability in her own case lead to her becoming a trans boy as a young teenager.

The help apparently available to autistic children and their parents is therefore dangerous.

DeanElderberry · 05/02/2024 07:21

I don't know whether the posts on here saying that Eddie's father has a history of crime wrt indecent images of children are accurate. If so, that suggests a background that could easily fill a child with hate. I hope he isn't too old to get help.

It also raises more questions about the wisdom of putting troubled children with varied back stories together without anyone in a supervisory capacity knowing about it. And increases my doubts about the wisdom of keeping names secret at all times. Maybe what is needed for rehabilitation isn't secrecy and silence, but acknowledgement and a preparedness to move on.

Too late for these youngsters, sadly.

Obviously it costs less money to shut it up.

My god this is dangerous. Horrific in fact because of the medical interventions it leads to

Interesting that Brianna’s mum is calling for restrictions to be placed on under 16s having phones and the apps they can access. TRAs aren’t going to like that very much.

It would be so good if there could be a lot of momentum built up to back Brianna’s mither’s call for this. It is catastrophic that parents feel they cannot stop their children having phones without making the children feel like they are the odd ones out/that peer pressure is making phones for children seem imperative.

Who is defending him then? People have said that they agree he made dehumanising, transphobic comments. They disagree that it was a prime driver in this murder.

I think that's a very fair summation; there's also been a lot of good commentary, following your post.

PaperWalkAndTalk · 05/02/2024 10:39

I'm not going to disagree on the negative consequences of social media, but it does seem that there are a multitude of failings here (as people have noted with how the local authorities deal with expelled pupils etc) and there are rumours about the father of the convicted boy. The focus on social media does allow certain public bodies off the hook.

Without social media the whole situation would be different, and it does affect those who are vulnerable to outside influence (particularly at those influential ages). We've seen how social media does influence people to cause violence, self-diagnose or develop mental illnesses, promote self-harm, promote transition, promote eating disorders.

One thing that isn't really mentioned is how it inflates ego and how children (and also some posters here) are finding out that reality and virtual reality are different.

SpicyMoth · 29/02/2024 15:46

Jesus....
Genuinely speechless, no idea what to say - Just.. Uerghhhh.

EDIT;
I've found my words, 15 months is nowhere near enough and I feel ILL.
How is 15 months acceptable for taking an indecent picture of a child plus 2 counts of exposure?
Man was very clearly escalating and his literal SON has gone on to participate in Biranna's murder so god only knows what he was teaching/telling/doing to his own bloody son - like.. What?
I'm so disgusted.

PaperWalkAndTalk · 29/02/2024 16:22

And yet we were told by the media that the murderers came from lovely homes, and that they were turned evil by horror videos (or as the activists would have it transphobia on MN etc).

SinnerBoy · 29/02/2024 17:34

You can imagine the father's attitude, can't you? He bought the boy a hunting knife and ran a kick boxing gym. I wonder how he treats his wife? His scummery is bound to have influenced the boy.

I wonder what the story is with this and if this is was a unisex changing room?

Brianna Ghey: Father of Brianna killer jailed for sex offences

The father of a boy who murdered Brianna Ghey admits exposure and taking an indecent photo of a child.

IcakethereforeIam · 29/02/2024 18:22

I was wondering that too.

Bloody hell this guy has two other children. How is it that he is considered safe to be around them?

https://www.irishnews.com/news/uk/father-of-brianna-gheys-murderer-jailed-for-sex-offences-against-girls-VTFFIL654ZP4XK3DGEU6QDIOJU/

“Detectives then analysed his phone and found a video taken three months before on the afternoon of August 22, 2023 at a waterpark in Cheshire.”

“The court heard Ratcliffe secretly recorded a “pre-pubescent” girl, aged 12 to 15, getting changed out of a swimming costume and exposing her breasts and vaginal area.

“Internet use on his phone also showed he had searched for pornography online using terms including “students”, “innocent teens” and “public dick flash”.

“But he later admitted the offences, and the court heard Ratcliffe had previous convictions for similar behaviour.

“In 2008 he was given a suspended prison sentence for exposure for masturbating in his car towards a girl aged 16.

“In 2012 he was given a three-year community order for exposure after being seen masturbating behind the wheel of his vehicle while stopped at a red light.“

FriendOfTimo · 29/02/2024 22:05

2008 would’ve been around the time Eddie was born, and he already had a brother.

There is a younger sister too - at least she’s safe while he’s in prison.

How the fuck was that man able to run martial arts classes for kids with a record of sexual offences? Yet another failing of authorities in the local area.

The papers have been wanging on about how normal S&E’s lives were and how respectable their parents are but there is nothing normal or respectable about being raised by a sex offender father and a mother who is willing to overlook those offences to stay in a relationship with the father, and even have another child with him.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 01/03/2024 07:38

Isn't it standard that men convicted of sex offences concerning children are presumed not to be a risk to their own children, until evidence accumulates to show they are? I think risk assessments place undue weight on the offenders being repulsed by incest.

ScrollingLeaves · 01/03/2024 08:14

What a horrible presumption if true. What about their children’s friends?
And, what about the sort of talk and atmosphere surrounding his own children and their friends as a result of what he gets up to skulking around the home?

And what’s to say men like this don’t behave abusively by thought, word or deed to their children?

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 01/03/2024 08:58

Yep. But we're living in a world where abusive men who've violently attacked their children's mothers in front of the children, get contact.

If my father had beaten my mother in front of me, I'd be terrified of him, and I wouldn't want to ever be with him on my own.

Yes, the idea that contact with abusive fathers is ‘in the child’s best interest’ and court ordered is extraordinary.

While this thread is bumped I just wanted to add this, it’s part of the Daily Mail’s podcast series on the trial but this episode is specifically an interview with Brianna’s mum, Esther Ghey.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RWqBJeJIlgU

Esther Ghey is an incredibly gracious woman, who despite the indescribable pain of losing a child to violent crime is focused on creating a better future for vulnerable teens.

In this interview Esther talks about Brianna’s struggles with ASD, ADHD and social anxiety and also about discovering Brianna’s online engagement with pro anorexia content after Brianna’s death.

Esther talks about the social contagion of mental unwellness between teens using social media (Esther does not mention gender dysphoria but it’s hard to imagine that she could be so clued up on the other social contagion stuff and not be aware of ROGD).

Esther would like to see restrictions on smart phones for children and teens, all three teenagers involved in this case used the Internet in damaging ways (leaving it all in the hands of parents cannot work as many parents are less adept with tech than their children are, creating this new, unprecedented imbalance between what the younger generation are consuming and what their parents are aware of).

as someone who has held off on giving my tween DD a smartphone specifically to try and protect her mental health I absolutely support Esther Ghey’s campaign.

Jane Fae, a late-life transitioning male who advocates for extreme pornography, and who once tried to explain away women being killed by male partners with the phrase ‘eggshell skulls’ (perhaps unsurprisingly) does not agree with Esther Ghey.

Jane thinks banning children and teens from the grimmer parts of the internet will be more harmful to ‘queer’ youth, although I cannot begin to fathom what would constitute more harm than being brutally stabbed to death by two teenagers who had radicalised each other with extreme content:

Signalbox · 01/03/2024 10:59

Yes I’ve seen multiple trans activists horrified by Esther Ghey’s unexpected swerve into campaigning for controls on children’s unrestricted access to the internet. Trans ideology primarily spreads via the internet. It’s so easy to separate children from the protection of their parents when you can speak to them 24/7 via their smart phone or personal laptops whilst their ignorant parents have zero idea of who their children are speaking to.
