Is the other KB there today? Ya know, the one that thinks she has XY chromosomes?

Kemi Badenoch statement re GRC recognition 6/12/23

ResisterRex · 06/12/2023 16:26

False.

If you're not from a country on the list, you have to go through the same process as someone here does.

That's the point she was making.

I'm worried about it impacting 'CIS folk' like Mushy though.

Whatever they might be.

Peterpieper · 06/12/2023 16:44

Watching it now on the link pp posted. Kemi is amazing, soo much common sense. She neatly countered the gay MP who said he was traumatised by the debate, by saying that referring to trauma did not contribute to a debate on facts

Chris Bryant? He just shrugged away the fact that a young lesbian women had her health compromised by the ideology he supports.

Yep she’s just a woman. Not important

kemi was so clear

Froodwithatowel · 06/12/2023 17:09

Someone needs to fill the traumatised MP in on basic self care: if he is unable to cope with the situation then he needs to leave, and regulate himself, and come back as and when he is able, being responsible for himself.

It is not up to the entire UK government to nanny him by never mentioning anything he personally doesn't feel comfortable hearing. And it would call into question his capacity to do his job if he is not a bit more resilient and responsible about managing his emotions than this.

IwantToRetire · 06/12/2023 17:14

I wasn't aware this was a current issue as I thought the Government had only recently updated the list (I am sure there was a thread about it here on FWR).

So does anyone know why it is being discussed now. Has the list been further revised in line with recent court cases re Scotland's proposed changes to GRCs? Sorry no time to listen now, but look forward to listening later and hearing KB. (If you remember when the Tories had that long drawn out selection process for new PM she did very well with public, but Tory MPs didn't approve. Maybe because she is usually straight forward and not flashy, not does she play to the gallery. ??)

Anyhow here is an article listing the countries and US states impacted:
https://uk.news.yahoo.com/parts-australia-us-removed-uk-163123137.html

Parts of Australia and US removed from UK gender recognition certificate list

Additions to the updated list include China, Cuba, India, Iran, Sri Lanka and Belarus.

According to the statement the list hadn't been updated since 2011 (I think that was the date mentioned).

Wow. I remember one of the first things I joined in (and shared on my personal social media) was a petition to government to hear women's views on GRA reform and self ID. All this information in parliament itself, from a minister, that was a pipe dream at that point.

Main concern at this point is the tories are going to be voted out soon. Have they timed this common sense such that they won't have the trouble of actually implementing anything?

IwantToRetire · 06/12/2023 17:25

That's strange as I checked .gov.uk and it said it was updated 2022.

Do you mean this page? As the update isn't a substantial / consequential one if so, but it's not that clear unless you click to show it:

Kemi Badenoch's comment that she was told/advised not to meet Kiera Bell was alarming - who told her this and why?

Before we all crown Kemi Badenoch queen of women’s rights you should look up her voting record on abortion. I think her position on this is more a cynical stance to gain support in the upcoming implosion of the conservative party than a genuine concern for women

I've just had a look at KB's voting record on abortion.

What is it specifically about her voting record that would make you think that she doesn't have a genuine concern for women?

KB responding re the loopholes in current practice - the biggest fucking loophole is the GRA itself and the imposed secrecy around a GRC.

I thought this was what Jackie Doyle-Price's question was about, but KB seems to have interpreted to be about how the GRA interacted with the EA.

I thought what JDP was asking was that now that we have equal pension ages and same-sex marriage, why does anyone actually need a GRC?

Yet another occasion that am hugely impressed by an MP on this one issue, finding myself agreeing with it all today, when I could almost guarantee I would strongly disagree with her otherwise. Probably be Truss later. Come on Labour, it’s going to become more painful for us left leaning women the nearer we get to the GE.

IwantToRetire · 06/12/2023 17:42

Last updated 21 December 2022

So presumably soon it will show updated 6 or 7 December 2023.

But maybe it is going to be a new list, as it is the grounds on which they aren't accepted that has changed (maybe?).

But good that this has been discussed in public and maybe make a few more people think rather than being "kind".

Chris Bryant / Kemi from the Hansard

https://hansard.parliament.uk/Commons/2023-12-06/debates/E7306EC2-EFCB-4331-BD82-F01FDF67CCBF/GenderRecognition

Sir Chris Bryant
(Rhondda) (Lab)
I will say this as gently as I can. As a gay man, I feel less safe today than I did three years or five years ago. Why? Sometimes it is because of the rhetoric used in the public debate, including by the Minister. [Interruption.] I am afraid we are not able to have a debate. Let us have a debate; I would be very happy to debate. I am just making the point that many of us feel less safe today, and when people over there on the Government Benches cheer, as they just did, it chills me to the bone—it genuinely does.

I will ask the Minister two very simple questions. First, how many people does she think today’s decision will affect—a precise number? Secondly, she will know that there are lots of people in the UK who have entered into a same-sex civil partnership or marriage and would like that to be recognised in other countries around the world, so that they can live their lives there, wherever it may be. What has she done since being in power to ensure that more countries recognise same-sex civil partnerships and marriages?

Kemi Badenoch
I, too, will speak very gently. The hon. Gentleman says that my rhetoric chills him to the bone. I would be really keen to hear what exactly it is that I have said, either in this statement or previously, that is so chilling. I will tell him what chilled me. In May 2021, against official adviceI stress that officials said, “You should not have this meeting”I met a young lady called Keira Bell, a lesbian, who told me of the horrific experience she had had at the Tavistock clinic. It was an eye-opening experience. The hon. Member for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath (Neale Hanvey) talked about “transing away the gay” in his speech in Westminster Hall. We are seeing, I would say, almost an epidemic of young gay children being told that they are trans and being put on a medical pathway for irreversible decisions, and they are regretting it.

This is what I am doing for young LGBT children: I am making sure that they do not find themselves being sterilised because they are being exploited by people who do not understand what these issues are. I am saying this on the advice of clinicians and academics, because clinicians from the Tavistock clinic have been whistleblowing, talking about what these issues are. The hon. Gentleman says that he is traumatised; we are traumatised by what is happening to young children, and we will run away from this issue no longer.
