'The Quebec Boxing Federation was reportedly aware of Walmsley’s biological sex, but justified the fight by stating they had chosen an appropriate referee for the match. Ultimately, Bissonnette says her decision to withdraw came down to safety.'

'Following Bissonnette’s withdrawal, Walmsley issued a statement to the press accusing her of “outing” him and warning that similar actions would have a negative impact on female athletes.'

CANADA: Female Boxer Withdraws From Competition After Being Matched Against Male Fighter - Reduxx

A female boxer withdrew from a provincial championship in Quebec after learning that her opponent was biologically male, leading to him winning the competition by default. Dr. Katia Bissonnette of Saguenay says she was matched against transgender fight...

How does it even work with the weight categories? I'd have thought that most men would be significantly heavier than a woman, even of an apparently similar size - and so not a fair match, even leaving aside the stinking obvious.

Presumably the weight has to be right, but that doesn't account for proportions of muscle, bone and fat. Or the types of muscle.

Interesting that in one of the articles above he actually says "Equality..... requires men to recognise how their masculinity offers them relative advantages, and think of strategies to address that." and then allegedly fails to see that choosing to fight against biological women is a way of giving himself a "relative advantage". You couldn't make this stuff up.

He seems rather confused. His maleness gives him far more advantage than any putative advantage of masculinity.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/11/2023 09:59

Yes, it's maleness, and the strategy to address male advantage in sports is simple and long established - separate categories for each sex. 'Gender'

RandomNutter · 17/11/2023 10:03

Men find it much easier to cut weight before fights. They have more muscle which they can dehydrate for weigh ins, then rehydrate after. So a much heavier man can fight at a lower weight.
The more you know, the fairer it seems.

MintTrackies · 17/11/2023 10:06

I have taken up a combat sport. I’m a big, strong, heavy woman. Even the small guys in the classes could eviscerate me.

This is an area where there should be absolutely no debate. Men cannot be allowed to punch women.

cheezncrackers · 17/11/2023 10:08

I think this is the only way that women stop this shit of men being permitted to compete against them. Each time it happens, in whichever sport the women refuse to compete. You can't run a competition where women are pitted against men if the women refuse to compete. So whether it's swimming or boxing, darts or rugby, running or cycling, if the women contestants refuse to compete against biological males, whatever the 'gender' of their magical thinking, there will have to be a rethink.

Ah, yes - very good point.

I wonder if there are also (legitimate) tactics used to add or gain weight in order to deliberately get into a less common weight class, with fewer people in it, to reduce the competition and increase your chances of winning?

You know, the same as finding a competition with very few males like you in it (e.g. 'women's' events) and forcing your way into it, to hugely increase your chances of winning that way.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 17/11/2023 10:12

Are there sex-based differences with biological advantages in darts?!

Didsomeonesaydogs · 17/11/2023 10:21

@FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper
Two that spring to mind for male biological advantages for darts are lower resting heart rate and different ratios of fast twitch muscle fibres could increase accuracy of a darts flight.

But then there’s also many social advantages for males in sports such as darts and pool/snooker too.

PaterPower · 17/11/2023 14:48

The category that they both entered was apparently the “165 lb. super welterweight category” for women (ha ha) who’ve fought between zero and 5 contests. In other words, intended for starters / relative amateurs.

165lb is too heavy for the official super welterweight category, which is usually 147-154lbs (going by Google)

I can’t find anything on Mya Walmsley‘s weight, or previous boxing record in Australia, possibly because they weren’t boxing as ‘Mya’ over there. But at least one of the online articles I found has him quoted as saying he’d trained and boxed for the last 4 years, ramping up intensity over the last 1.5.

This would have been his first fight “as a woman” (sic)

Maybe this is why he transitioned (I say that term loosely). Did he feel his ‘masculinity’ offered no advantage (he looked a fairly standard man in photos) so he decided ‘femininity’ would offer that? Which it has as he’s a fighter now because he can fight weaker opponents and gain some accolades he didn’t appear to have. He was unremarkable.

I always think there’s a sexual angle (incels, porn etc) abusive angle, as well as an internalised masculinity crisis in the males who love to dominate women’s things. Not all but a large proportion.

It also shows the emperor has no clothes when the entire podium of winners is obviously not female. Sad for women who lose out, but facilitating the fantasy and open abuse of women (sport can be dangerous) is worse.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 17/11/2023 22:36

Can you imagine what would (will?) happen if the whole 'transage' thing gains purchase - and podiums for the winners of sports competitions for under 11s are all straining under the weight of proudly-celebrating great big hairy, burly blokes?

Would anybody dare say anything then, or would the #bekind crew demand that any dissenters #shutup keep their counsel, rather than risk upsetting the poor vulnerable little massive dudes?

So you think it's okay for a man to repeatedly punch a woman, as long as he says he's female first? Okay! Glad we're clear on that.

Paola11 · 20/11/2023 17:04

yeah I know, it’s pretty hard to notice it. Btw I thought “mums” would have more love and understating, but I notice more hatred.

It's extraordinary isn't that? That a load of 'mums' would actually think that another woman's safety was more important that a man's delusion ...

Paola11 · 20/11/2023 17:07

First of all, it’s transphobic to call “man” a trans woman. She doesn’t “say”, she is a woman. Maybe not a born-woman, but still is.

Maybe we’re keen for fairness and safety in sports for females

Especially when it includes being hit

Are you actually defending a biological male who is angry that he doesn’t get to hit biological female people?

Seriously, you think you have the moral high ground in this?

Dh has been watching darts recently. It seems to me that reach is definitely a factor as they all lean as far forward as they can.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 20/11/2023 17:11

Ah I see @Paola11 mistaking mumsnet for us being peoples actual mum & nodding along saying “that’s nice dear” as men punch women

men are not women the same way aardvarks are not elephants & apples are not limes

Paola11 · 20/11/2023 17:14

I’m not talking about the actual fight, I’m talking about everything around it. Everyone here insists on calling her as him and male. This is transphobia. Everything else is debatable.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 20/11/2023 17:16

men are not women. I will not be compelled to lie and say that they are
