Women's rights general conversations - Thread 7

Continuation of Thread 6.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

The third attempt at a screening of Adult Human Female is currently ongoing at the University of Edinburgh. Huge Police Scotland, private security and University staff presence in attendance to allow women to...watch a film.

What a time to be alive, eh?

MouseMinge · 22/11/2023 19:11

BE KIND!

I hope it's third time lucky.

It's insane it has come to this.

Waitwhat23 · 22/11/2023 21:52

The screening has apparently gone very well but the women attending were subjected to shouted insults and booing from 'protesters' as they left. Random women walking in the general area were apparently also booed by groups of men, who clearly relish the opportunity to abuse verbally abuse women.

This is Edinburgh. In 2023.

Waitwhat23 · 22/11/2023 21:54

And City of Edinburgh Council are currently running this staggeringly hypocritical campaign - twitter.com/Edinburgh_CC/status/1726586353574453715

@Vegemiteandhoneyontoast well they can't give the wimmin the correct hormones appropriate for their body, what about the menz that 'need' them? 🙄

As we all know, six sessions of talk therapy is more than enough for menopausal women and the menz simply must be given whatever they want!

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 23/11/2023 09:51

It's like they're approaching both issues backwards. Anyone who sincerely declares themselves to be a bedspread or a bear or a 'gender' needs immediate therapeutic help. Anyone who experiences an actual biological medical condition such as the menopause needs immediate medical help.

MouseMinge · 23/11/2023 15:06

I'm sure that the right sort of therapy would stop my bones crumbling. Probably.

Never mind bedspread! I'm sincerely declaring that this is a photo of me!

Aah! Lovely stunning and brave transdog bedspread!

Runs like Hell...

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 23/11/2023 16:07

So, sleeping in a cat's innards is a 'dream bed' 😬

IcakethereforeIam · 23/11/2023 16:13

I can't work out the scale. I think it's a human sized cat bed with human sized shelves, lamps and ornaments. However, I keep seeing it as a cat sized cat bed with teeny cat sized shelves, lamps and ornaments. I'm getting a headache.

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 23/11/2023 17:07

Wow that bed is amazing.

MyLadyDisdainlsYetLiving · 23/11/2023 22:47

We have a black and white cat just like that. I would get all sorts of nightmares sleeping in that bed.

From the health research article (the topic is a regular feature in the Invisble Women newsletter - do sign up if you haven't already):

“When you give immunotherapy to melanoma patients, women tend to do better,” she said. “We know very little in terms of the why.”
Some drugs work better in women than in men, including so-called targeted therapies in cancer care. More research could show whether it’s because of a hormone such as estrogen. And if tweaking hormones during cancer care improves results, that could benefit men as well.

While thats a useful way to sell the idea of research to men, it almost certainly isn't as simple as that. They noticed with Covid that women did better during acute infection, hypothesised that oestrogen might be a factor, so tried giving oestrogen as part of the treatment. They found that it did help.women, but made no difference to men - because our immune cells respond differently to the hormone.

Ah! Still here - I thought I'd missed the start of a new thread.

Message from Mancurse: she's been banned by MN but can't think why. I have not noticed her mincing her words much, over the years - and good for her; bad cess to the rest.

@MouseMinge, special mention : Tell everyone I miss and love them, especially Mouse, hope she’s doing OK.

^^

SqueakyDinosaur · 24/11/2023 20:21

She's Mavis McGinty here isn't she?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 24/11/2023 20:30

Is she on FB? I'd like to stay in touch if possible.

IcakethereforeIam · 24/11/2023 20:36

No! Not Mavis!

weaseleyes · 24/11/2023 20:42

Obviously I wouldn't want to encourage THE HORROR of a PBP, but surely lovely Mavis can come back in some shape or form?
