Continuation of Thread 6.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Elaine Miller fanny physio extraordinaire has a new substack. Link below to her first post

https://open.substack.com/pub/venusenvyxx/p/april-fools?r=3n3gcw&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Thanks, boiledbeetle. Powerful and funny.

I know this is not the main point but this section of her glossary made me snort:

fanny* - idiot, vagina, pejorative ("He's a wee fanny.") If you are from North America and you think that “fanny” means “bottom” then, well, I hate to say it, but, you’re wrong. It is my mission to correct that, and also rogue use of “z” where it’s meant to be an “s” and restore “u” to its rightful place. I’ll get started on that just as soon as I’ve sorted politics, fannies, gender and got the ironing done…so you enjoy the misplaced fannies while you can, pal.

It wouldn't be the same without the Scots accent. This is why middle class comedians used to affect regional or working class accents for their on-stage persona.

I read it with Elaines voice in my head!! You're right an English accent doesn't do it justice!

Engaged in a discussion on Threads and had this article cited claiming zero evidence that trans women in public bathrooms increases risk to women and girls. Anybody got any comments about it? www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/no-link-between-trans-inclusive-policies-bathroom-safety-study-finds-n911106

I can't read the whole study because you need to pay for it but on first glance what I can tell the data they used was before 2016?

So I don't think it's quite as up to date as they try to make it seem.

IcakethereforeIam · 01/04/2024 19:18

Just read this article by Julie Bi..no..Burchill. I thought it was interesting

https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/lets-hear-it-for-the-oiks/

How the working classes are being marginalised, going unheard. Terfs get a mention 😁

I've never heard of Doug Lucie and now i desperately want to see his plays.

What happened to the working class?

All the jobs which once provided an escape route for bright, non-academic working class kids have been colonised by the expensively-educated.

I wonder how many Starmers they get?

I wonder how many Starmers they get?

Ooh, that is just SO tempting. We had a town council by-election a couple of weeks ago and I voted for the independent candidate who told me on the doorstep that he had been a member of the Labour Party all his life until "Keir Spineless" opened his mouth. He won.

duc748 · 03/04/2024 12:30

Well, MN has some great wordsmiths... 😃

IcakethereforeIam · 03/04/2024 12:31

I'm torn between Starmer and the SNP, it seems mean to single out Humza.

SinnerBoy · 05/04/2024 06:44

What a bloody idiot, why didn't he report it to the Police? I thought that MPs got training for cases of blackmail?

mach2 · 05/04/2024 06:51

Best not send iffy pictures to strangers!

StephanieSuperpowers · 05/04/2024 06:55

That's a rule to live by.

SinnerBoy · 05/04/2024 07:56

Yes!

I've been wondering how they found out it was him who gave the numbers out. Also, what else he might have divulged? Surely it's well known that Grinder is notorious for blackmail plots?

BezMills · 05/04/2024 07:59

I think they need more memorable advice

Like "if it seems iffy, don't snapchat your stiffy"

Wise words, well put!

This is a fascinating map. I’d never really considered it before, but thinking back it mirrors my experience of the school playground exactly:

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 06/04/2024 01:34

Fascinating, and very sad.

It doesn't mirror my experience, but I went to a rather odd school - and one with very different types of playgrounds. Some areas did tend to segregate, I think, but overall boys and girls took fairly equal space. The football pitch part that looks like that map was used by all - skateboarding and mixed games of tag and conkers. I don't actually remember football happening all that often - when it did it was more boys than girls but they didn't get it all to themselves. Smaller ball games were along the edge of that area, along with setting off caps (cap guns forbidden, but the rolls of caps allowed - and small firecrackers when someone could get them) - all those were mixed activities. Boys were more likely to climb the apple trees and girls the nut trees, both used the climbing frame. The main grass 'running around' space was equal ops British bulldog, or snowball fights in season. The quiet bit enclosed by hedges was more of a girls' space - imaginative play, daisy chains, and more tree climbing (conifers). The veranda was for skipping and chatting, so that's the only part where the girls tended to gather at an edge. Apart from dens - which by their nature are around the edges and hedges, so boys dens were there too.

Thinking back over that, I hadn't realised quite how much of my school playtime was spent off the ground one way or another (or in a hedge).

I missed this on the day. Despite the laughable headline it does seem to be a serious article rather than an April Fool.
