Women's rights general conversations - Thread 7

Continuation of Thread 6.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Oof! She's done that before, hasn't she?

"It's just knickers, Dylan."

It's such a great line. The way that AGPs and the likes of Mulvaney play into these stereotypes that they've mostly made up in their own stupid minds verges on sickening.

I loved that bit, plus the follow up about (paraphrased) just wanting them to cover our arses and not ride up inside.

I am wildly herpetophobic and I felt my blood pressure rise several notches watching that video.

I couldn't watch at all. I took off my specs and scrolled past quickly so I wouldn't even see the still image. Thank goodness it's on the previous page now!

That snake catching woman is really impressive. She was so calm, just got on with the job.

Have logged away the technique, just in case.

Are you anticipating a cobra encounter in your daily life?

I'm afraid to confess that the technique for dealing with any snake when I was growing up in SE Asia was to (a) run away screaming (b) if not possible, beat it to death with the longest possible pole.

I used to catch grass snakes as a kid, but I'd definitely avoid a cobra.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 20/03/2024 09:04

Hopefully not, @Kucinghitam but you never know and I still hold by the Brownies advice to 'Be prepared'.

I've come across plenty of grass snakes, and a viper once, but that's all in this country. On a walk in the mountains in Taiwan I did once see a huge black snake that slithered away through the bamboo and my reaction was to do an immediate about turn and walk in the opposite direction. The dog reacted in the same way.

SinnerBoy · 20/03/2024 09:05

I just love the way that she was so careful, to avoid injuring it.

I definitely favour the run away screaming option!

Yes, that was lovely to see.

Another thing from my childhood which I've taught my DC (when visiting home) - if walking in any unmowed grass or undergrowth, to thrash a small stick ahead of them in case of snakes.

Oh, and to be wary of snakes dangling from overhanging branches. Some of the sneaky buggers are even green.

This makes it sound like I lived in an Indiana Jones film, but in fact I grew up in a city. We just had some very intrepid wildlife.

I initially missed the 🐍 video. I thought you were still talking about Mulvainey. I first thought, well I'm no fan, but that's a bit harsh. Then I nearly went to watch the video!!!

Thank you @Vegemiteandhoneyontoast for clarification.

I once had a snake come out of the undergrowth and crawl across my bare toes, I think this was in Bedfordshire.

Lovely Saint Patrick!

SinnerBoy · 20/03/2024 11:53

And Saint Hilda, who turned all the snakes to stone and embedded them in the cliffs of North Yorkshire.

Alternative explanations for the ammonites of the late Lias are available.

Britinme · 20/03/2024 12:27

I'll vote for the two options @Kucinghitam gave,

Britinme · 20/03/2024 12:28

I remember picking ammonites up from the beach at Whitby as a child.

Just found this

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/the-exhibition-only-admitted-women-so-a-man-sued-qlzdm5nxp

https://archive.ph/XQyEQ come inside my sugar paywall

Don't know anything about the artist, is she twaw?, are tw allowed in? But the whole court case could be part of the artwork.

Edited to add, if tw are allowed in, the bloke could have saved himself the cost and faff of a court case and just said the magic words. Or put on lippy too if he wanted to be a bit extra.

The exhibition only admitted women — so a man sued

Jason Lau called out discrimination. The museum said that’s the point

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 20/03/2024 13:53

The only time I've encountered a snake in the wild (South Africa) my reflex reaction was to run after it for a better look. My instincts may be broken.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 20/03/2024 13:57

If the man paid $35 for a museum ticket but not the $500 for a 2-person Lounge ticket, then surely he had no right of entry regardless of his sex.

BezMills · 20/03/2024 16:14

One day we were sat on the beach at Byron Bay and saw a 6 foot black snake (almost certainly veh poisonous) swim out of the surf and crawl into the rocks. As if surfing wasn't dangerous enough...

What the fuck is wrong with people on The Right Side of History?

This is not a joke. The baby and its mother have no connection with me, @wizardingnews. That isn’t my daughter. Your vendetta against me is causing collateral damage to innocent people. If legal action is the only way to protect them, I will take it.
