Women's rights general conversations - Thread 7

Kucinghitam · 05/11/2023 18:13

Continuation of Thread 6.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Liz Truss, like Jordan Peters and various RW ghouls, is someone I would very much like to STFU on this. It's painfully evident that she's jumping on a bandwagon and trying to hijack it for a demented libertarian crusade. If I thought she gave one tiny, shiny shit for women's rights, I would feel better about it, but she doesn't and I don't.

Gonners · 10/03/2024 10:38

@SqueakyDinosaur Liz Truss, like Jordan Peters and various RW ghouls, is someone I would very much like to STFU on this ...

And on everything else, really. I can't decide if she's actually certifiable (IANAD) but my inclination would be to confine her to a safe space and allow her to care for soft toys.

Snowypeaks · 10/03/2024 10:43

@SqueakyDinosaur, @Gonners
Can you explain what your objections are to the proposals and also why you think Truss is hijacking women's rights, and for what crusade?

EasternStandard · 10/03/2024 11:07

I haven’t really followed Truss on this but reading about the bill it mentioned she dropped Self ID as equalities minister in 2020

So not behind others really

duc748 · 10/03/2024 11:40

On this topic more than most, you can't always pick your bedfellows, can you? 😛I don't think I'd like to live in a world ruled by Liz Truss. Or Kemi Badenoch. Or Miriam Cates. But that doesn't mean they are wrong about everything. I guess one of the issues with any new legislation like this is, how will it fit in with existing laws?

Snowypeaks · 10/03/2024 11:51

The bill focuses narrowly on the meaning of "sex" in the EA2010, which should make it easier to support. It would reinforce secondary legislation and non-statutory guidance about single-sex spaces and services. It would also save FWS and all those who donated hundreds of thousands of pounds by obviating the need for a supreme court ruling on this issue. It would be a helpful steer for the EHRC and Baroness Falkner.

JKR: the gift who keeps on giving. Thank you JK, you are the GOAT

I'd say the non birthing parents who identify as birthing parents are unhappy about that genocidal bigotry.

This is how this is going to be fought in the USA, one lawsuit at a time until the insurance companies and school districts and employers catch on. https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2024/03/07/fairfax-transgender-student-policy-lawsuit/

Here's an archive link for the WaPo article

It had over 1300 comments when it was archived.

I decided to register for a free account at the WaPo, gave them my spam email address and was directed to "reset your password" - turns out I already had one and am officially "Remoaner", which dates it nicely. 😄

According to the sports bit of the Telegraph, Starmer thinks TWANW, in sport at least:

mach2 · 12/03/2024 03:46

There is no position that Starmer cannot reverse as soon as convenient.

StephanieSuperpowers · 12/03/2024 08:39

You've got to admire the conviction...

that saying whatever appears popular is deffo the way to go.

SqueakyDinosaur · 12/03/2024 09:49

Stonewall have a tweet up saying something inane about their legacy and asking what yours will be. Unusually, they don't seem to have closed it to comment (yet). Get in there!

“Any student who has a need or desire for increased privacy in using a bathroom or locker room, regardless of the underlying reason, is provided with reasonable accommodations, including access to single user facilities.”

How terrible it would be if lots of girls at that school just happened to simultaneously request increased personal privacy, for their own private reasons!

Whatever will the school do if there are so many that the existing single user facilities are overwhelmed?

MmePoppySeedDefage · 12/03/2024 13:21

I got there too late, but some stalwart women managed it.

Re Starmer, of course it's also at odds with the tenet of what Angela Eagle has been burbling about. Still, watch this space.

I came across this short Substack piece on pronouns last night, which I think is an excellent summary of the issues:
