Continuation of Thread 6.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

I love the picture, she's flying!

Gonners · 07/03/2024 20:20

@IcakethereforeIam That it's even being considered....Canada is insane

Timely for me, though, as my ghastly, self-righteous elder stepson and his certifiable wife are visiting from BC in about 10 days and MrG has now agreed that it's probably best if I absent myself rather than bring it up. Result! I'll Skype #2 stepson in Montreal about it, though. He actually likes women.

StephanieSuperpowers · 07/03/2024 20:28

I like the sound of Stepson and Mrs Stepson. They sound utterly dreadful and not in my environment, so hilarious.

Sorry for you, of course.

Gonners · 07/03/2024 21:20

Arf! No need to feel sorry for me. I had already planned to escape out of the back door when the front doorbell rings. MrGon will be stuck with them for up to 5 hours, and I feel guilty about that, but the alternative is potentially quite a lot worse.

IcakethereforeIam · 07/03/2024 21:26

Hide the good biscuits.

Before you leave the house, ensure it is liberally decorated with suffragette ribbons, green-white-violet floral displays, and vintage photographs like this.

Anglea Eagle on Labour pledges: twitter.com/angelaeagle/status/1765795128407388651?

Trans-inclusive conversion therapy ban [bye bye exploratory therapy]

Anti-LGBT+ hate crime to be an aggravated offence [seems to misunderstand how 'hate crime' legislation currently works]

Modernise [undefined] Gender Recognition processes

Appoint international LGBT+ envoy [to where?]

Sigh.

This is the horror that is Ellie Gomersall celebrating 'Today's edition of @ScotNational is historic - the first Scottish newspaper in my lifetime to be written by, produced and contributed to exclusively by women. What an honour it is to be a part of it.'

Ellie is a man. We can't even have one day to celebrate women. One fucking day.

Waitwhat23 · 08/03/2024 18:33

Though I think you'll like this -

'On International Women's Day, I am honouring the "anonymous accounts", the persistent comments under the line using a pseudonym, the Mumsnet accounts (often with the most hilarious of user names) - all those who have doggedly found a way to keep prioritising safeguarding.

#InternationalWomensDay'

I have no interest in football but this film sounds interesting:

Copa 71: the inside story of the secret Women’s World Cup.

“Women have very little idea of how much men hate them": Germaine Greer.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 09/03/2024 10:28

That does sound worth a watch.

On a similar theme, I recommend Chak de India, about the Indian women's hockey team. Which wasn't actually banned, but had similar struggles with ridicule, family opposition, lack of funding etc.

The film sounds really good, right at the end of the clip it says in cinemas from 8th March. I'm sure it will start to appear elsewhere soon.

Indeed. Apaz it is on today at Manchester Home cinema, and doubtless elsewhere.

MouseMinge · 09/03/2024 20:08

I was reading about the film yesterday and I'm definitely going to go and see it if possible.

I was reading about them after the England team won the Euros and was shocked to find out that women's football had actually been banned. I'm pretty sure I know why. During WWI it was incredibly popular with no men's football being available. I think it remained a bit too popular post-war and that's why they banned it. What was seemly during the war became unseemly after the war but that will definitely not have been the only reason or even the main reason but it would have been a good excuse. It was similar for women's baseball in the US during WWII. If you get a chance to watch A League of their Own on Netflix. It was so good and it's not been taken up for a second series which is bloody annoying.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 10/03/2024 07:29

Times article - yet more evidence that women are not just smaller men: we are built differently in all sorts of ways. What idiot would argue otherwise?

Does anyone know if it stands an earthlies?

The final paragraph is interesting

The Telegraph understands that the NHS will provide more detail on plans to restrict the use of puberty blockers for under-16s as soon as next week.

I haven’t read the article but did hear something on the radio

There are a fair few private member’s bills so to me it’s good that this one is picking up coverage

Snowypeaks · 10/03/2024 08:51

Good news. Exactly what we need. Well done, Liz Truss. Come on, Kemi Badenoch, get behind this. Deeds, not words.

Sigh.

It's not getting many likes and no supportive comments.
