Women's rights general conversations - Thread 7

Continuation of Thread 6.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

I think the last time I saw the stage show, Jason Donovan was Frank.

MyLadyDisdainlsYetLiving · 11/12/2023 12:52

Anthony Stewart Head for me.

MouseMinge · 11/12/2023 12:58

I've just realised, and how has it escaped me all these many years! Dracula came from Transylvania. He's trans! Sorry s/he/they are trans! AND! There's a homeland for the most vulnerable group on the planet!

SqueakyDinosaur · 11/12/2023 18:27

There is also Transnistria.

And, having had every gynae scan known to woman, the transvaginal ultrasound always makes me laugh and think of the Transiberian Express.

BezMills · 11/12/2023 18:33

Yeah if you wanted to go to Hebden Bridge you could go on the trans pennine railway

JanesLittleGirl · 11/12/2023 18:53

BezMills · 11/12/2023 18:33

Yeah if you wanted to go to Hebden Bridge you could go on the trans pennine railway

Surely that would depend on where you started. If you started in Leeds it would be a cis-pennine journey.

BezMills · 11/12/2023 19:05

Head esplodes!

MmePoppySeedDefage · 12/12/2023 03:18

Heh!

This is a good, if inevitably long, summary of where we are now, with one or two ways of looking at aspects of gender stuff that hadn't occurred to me before:

Looks interesting, PSD.

I may have a quibble or 2.with the 'origin in the brain' part - that claim usually turns out to rely on a debunked study that failed to control for sexuality. I'm reserving jusldgement on that bit until I get to the end and see if it's unpacked (with references).

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 12/12/2023 10:20

[Verdict: not refenced, but also not relied on as a significant part of the argument - just a passing mention - so I'll let it go.]

Yes, good piece. Nothing in there that will be a surprise to readers of FWR, but a nicely set out summary.

angelico53 · 12/12/2023 10:36

I had the same view of the science stuff. But at least he points to agps as egregious entitled saddos.

National Police Chiefs Council guidance (from this August) on searches by trans officers: https://twitter.com/WeAreFairCop/status/1734297990938988913?

From the moment they transition (officers must not be asked for a GRC or birth cert - transition is defined as 'presenting' in their new gender; no, 'presenting' is not defined) officers search people of the same gender as the officer's 'lived gender'.

If the person being searched objects, the officer must be offered support and it may be recorded as a non-crime hate incident.

Fucking hell 😱

SinnerBoy · 12/12/2023 15:05

Good grief, but that's absolutely bloody ridiculous.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 12/12/2023 15:15

The one good bit is that if the person being searched objects, a different officer will take over ('to de-escalate the situation').

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 12/12/2023 15:20

But do you then get a black mark against your name?

Waitwhat23 · 12/12/2023 15:24

I suppose that it's not a real surprise given that various Police forces across the UK are institutionally misogynist (not an opinion, has been stated by them or concluded in reports).

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 12/12/2023 15:39

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 12/12/2023 15:20

But do you then get a black mark against your name?

Only if they think you have requested a different officer for discriminatory reasons (like them being the wrong sex). Presumably if you objected on perfectly reasonable grounds such as them being right handed or their badge number not being divisible by 7 you'd be fine.

CriticalCondition · 12/12/2023 17:20

Bloody hell. 😱

I thought that surely it can't be as bad as that, there must be some sub-clause in that NPCC guidance that means it's not as bad as that.

But there isn't. I read it. And I can't quite believe it but I think it's worse. I thought it was going to be 'pat down' type searches which would be bad enough. But the guidance seems to apply to 'strip and intimate' searches too.

Jesus. Someone tell me I'm wrong.

duc748 · 12/12/2023 17:37

Considering all the abuse that the police get, from criminals, suspects, and just the GBP in general, and they are told (rightly) that it's all part of the job, and they just have to get on with it. But if a woman says, get your hands out of my knickers, the hurty feelings are so bad that the poor flower must be offered support?

CriticalCondition · 12/12/2023 18:33

But if a woman says, get your hands out of my knickers, the hurty feelings are so bad that the poor flower must be offered support?

And the woman acquires a non crime hate incident file that could destroy her career.

The more I see of this stuff the more I think it really, really is about power. Men and power. Old wine, new bottles.

SqueakyDinosaur · 12/12/2023 19:10

Meanwhile, in the House of Commons, during the Rwanda Bill debate, Chris Bryant, signed-up member of the TWAW brigade, who declared last week that Kemi Badenoch was making him feel "unsafe", rightly said this:

"Declaring somewhere safe doesn't make it of itself safe. You can no more change reality by law or legal dictate than you can by mere imagination".

I mean, join the dots, man.

Kucinghitam · 12/12/2023 19:30

The fucking irony!!

I really hope they win.

Ever since the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference adopted a policy that allows males who identify as female to compete in girls’ athletic events, boys have consistently deprived Selina Soule, Alanna Smith, Chelsea Mitchell, and Ashley Nicoletti of honors and opportunities to compete at elite levels. CIAC’s policy is at odds with Title IX, a federal law designed to create equal opportunities for women in education and athletics.

I'm so happy! I've been blocked by RMW for saying that Michael Foran writes better than him. What a fucking snowflake.
