Women's rights general conversations - Thread 7

Continuation of Thread 6.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

The result of the Scottish Gov appeal of the Section 35 veto of the GRR Bill is due tomorrow apparently.

Kucinghitam · 08/12/2023 10:59

Thanks for that thread @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn, looks like I'll have some interesting reading material for my lunch break!

I've just heard a trailer for Radio 4's Antisocial programme today at 12. It's going to be trans kids and schools. And what is the law. Should be interesting although I'm not that hopeful given that Adam Fleming's ventures into this topic so far have been quite feeble and all finished with a 'be kind' gloss on them.

MouseMinge · 08/12/2023 13:05

It was an interesting listen, what I heard of it. I was sleeping for the first half which helps explain the bizarre dream I was having which was me going back in time to the Sydney Olympics and having to get through hoards of different groups of TRAs all talking about genocide while threatening actual women. Bob Mortimer was also there dressed as a baby but I have no explanation for that beyond my messed up brain.

Adam Fleming wasn't great but the woman speaking up for the rights of children was calm and firm.

James Woods is a big Trump fan, as I recall. But them's the battle-lines in the US.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 09/12/2023 00:04

There's a dedicated S35 thread with the details, but if you've not seen it Lady Haldane has rejected the Scot Gov challenge to the UK gov's Section 35 block on the Scottish self-ID changes.

I would buy all of those candles. All of the fuckers.

duc748 · 09/12/2023 23:40

Especially the last.

I saw that on Twitter the other night, briefly wondered where it was from then quickly realised I have lots of empty candle jars, a candle making kit someone bought me a few Christmases ago and a printer and pritt stick. I may spend some time over the Christmas period making my own versions!

duc748 · 10/12/2023 22:49

I'm watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show on TV. I don't think I've seen it since back then. Happier, simpler, times, eh? I'd forgotten Meat Loaf was in it! 😀

IcakethereforeIam · 10/12/2023 22:58

If you do @Boiledbeetle please post some pictures.

If I can find a scrap of fur, I'm thinking of making a festive merkin to hang on the tree 😁

If it happens I will, but I've got to find the candle making kit first!!!!

Boiledbeetle · 10/12/2023 23:01

And i look forward to the photos of your merkin decorations

I watched it too. It's been a long while since I last saw it. Tim Curry is so HOT in it and yes, happier and more innocent times even though the film is far from innocent!

As I was watching I was wondering if the TRAs would want to cancel it or claim it as proof that there have always been transgender people which would be pushing the point but they've claimed Joan of Arc as trans so nothing would surprise me.

It wasn't set in Transylvania for nothing, eh?

BezMills · 11/12/2023 10:12

Case closed!

MyLadyDisdainlsYetLiving · 11/12/2023 11:00

Just a sweet transvestite from [the alien planet] Transsexual Transylvania.

[spoiler alert] who got sent back home in the end because his lifestyle became too extreme. I mean it’s unsurprising really his house was a hot bed of drug addiction, murder, cannibalism and really bad dancing, let alone the seduction and unethical scientific experimentation. Grin

IcakethereforeIam · 11/12/2023 11:14

Must have cost a fortune to heat, everyone scampering around in their underwear and it was, clearly, not the weather for it.

MyLadyDisdainlsYetLiving · 11/12/2023 11:24

On a side note I’ve been watching I Claudius again and it’s really hard to watch Patricia Quinn and not see Magenta. Must have been filmed right after RHPS. Those lips!

Gonners · 11/12/2023 11:39

I saw the stage show at the Kings Road Theatre in - bloody hell! - 1973. They still had the old cinema seats and people were led down the very dimly-lit aisles to their seats by members of the cast with torches. You couldn't see their faces until you went to sit down, whereupon they tapped you on the shoulder, turned the torch to shine upwards from under their chins, and leered horribly. There was a lot of terrified screaming!

duc748 · 11/12/2023 11:41

Sounds brilliant! 😀

Tallisker · 11/12/2023 12:06

I adore that film. I've been to see the stage show several times and got dressed up too. You used to be able to do the newspaper thing, the water pistol thing and the lighter thing but elf & safety won't let you these days. Especially not the lighter thing.

So many quotable lines
