Women's rights general conversations - Thread 7

Continuation of Thread 6.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

I'd say it's a interesting article rather than a good one. The intention is sound, but the research and understanding decidedly lacking. A reasuring display of proper thought in some of the comments, though.

Horrifying how many children in the US seem to have (general, non-gender-related) cosmetic surgery.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 02/12/2023 18:31

I vaguely recall being told by a TRSOHer that "safeguarding" is a "transphobic dog whistle" for Bad People.

How very convenient.

StephanieSuperpowers · 02/12/2023 18:36

Even if it is, I don't care. Safeguarding is essential for the safety and well being of children and I don't care who finds it offensive.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 03/12/2023 00:22

From the Unison newsletter, one in the article on 2024's Year of LGBT+ Workers, and the other in the piece on how to be a trans ally.

Good UnHerd article. That’s why I suggested reading the comments. The NYT readership was not taken in by Polgreen’s article.

DeanElderberry · 03/12/2023 10:12

I was feeling guilty because I found Polgreen's article unreadable and gave up after about two paragraphs. The bit about how if she hadn't given up swimming she'd have been a champion and won a scholarship had Shane McGowan's ' '' I could have been someone ". Well so could anyone' . . . . ringing out as loud as those Christmas bells.

Winterborne74 · 05/12/2023 17:13

Have you mixed up Julie Bs perhaps? Unlike Bindel, I don’t think Burchill has ever laid into KJK so not sure it would be an olive branch?

IcakethereforeIam · 05/12/2023 17:20

You know @Winterborne74 I think I have. Apologies, and thank you for catching that and correcting me. Probably wishful thinking on my part.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 06/12/2023 06:27

What's the joke about Ash Sarkar?

BezMills · 06/12/2023 06:47

Burchill had to payout £££££££ after a libel action

Woman2023 · 06/12/2023 08:47

Winterborne74 · 05/12/2023 20:45

I do this all the time, whenever I am talking about Bindel for some reason I say Burchill, despite knowing full well who both of them are.

Good read from Jean Hachet.

That's a very calm, measured piece, isn't it?

Waitwhat23 · 06/12/2023 10:17

A woman attending a session this morning at the Scottish Parliament has been forced to remove a FWS badge due to it being a 'lobbying group'.

But MSP's stoating about Parliament wearing Pink News merchandise is AOK it seems.

SinnerBoy · 06/12/2023 10:22

But Penis Views isn't a lobbying group, is it? It's more of a liespaper.

Waitwhat23 · 06/12/2023 10:28

FWS aren't registered as a lobbying group - they've stated that they don't meet the criteria.

Another woman was initially made to remove a plain Venus symbol badge but it was returned.

SinnerBoy · 06/12/2023 10:41

FWS aren't registered as a lobbying group

I know, I was being flippant....

duc748 · 06/12/2023 11:43

The Hatchet piece (!) concedes too much for me. it's more than just muscle mass and lung capacity. I don't think women should be required to demonstrate that they are at a disadvantage to men to have their own competition in sport. If you concede that, then people will say, well, no need for separate women's categories and rankings in say, chess, or poker. Or the Oscars.

Waitwhat23 · 06/12/2023 11:45

Tbf, I had to check what the specific definition of a lobbying group is (rather than a grassroots organisation which is what I believe FWS is) and now am aware of the existence of the lobbying register/regulations set by the Scottish Government. Just another point of random information now in my head.

Waitwhat23 · 06/12/2023 12:00

And this is what this morning's session was about. Your jaw will drop at Police Scotland's responses -
