I see Jess Phillips spoke on a Labour Women's Declaration platform tonight. Which means at least she's burnt her last remaining bridges to the wokies.

Is there any video footage?

she may have been encouraged to be bolder my KS latest comments. I wonder what off the record conversations have been going on

Wow, really?

I was going to say there is no chance she did but that's pretty bold (by Labour MP standards).

Supposedly there have been a lot of Labour women MPs who've lobbied the leadership behind the scences but been unwilling to front it out for fear of what happened to Rosie.

I don't think it would take too many to grow some ovaries and speak out for the floodgates to open.

That, more than anything else, would kill the last chance at self-ID becoming law.

Since when have women’s rights been so difficult to defend in the Labour Party. It shouldn’t be like this.

lifeturnsonadime · 09/10/2023 23:02

She did a talk in a pub in Birmingham last week and I really wanted to go to ask questions but unfortunately I couldn't make it.

I agree with @Normcore , it's absolutely ridiculous that we could be getting excited about this.

Women's rights should not be controversial or a party political issue.

We are as important as men.

She looks happy too.

A far cry from a few years ago when Thangam Debbonaire was the only Labour MP to say that feminist fringe meetings shouldn't be besieged by howling mobs.

Has Jess Phillips finally found her spine?

you're so right. It may have once been true that Labour was better than Conservatives but that doesn't feel true and hasn't for some time.

BlackForestCake · 09/10/2023 23:05

There was a live stream but it's private, but supposedly the video will be published in due course

Just remember that Labour have stated today that there are committed to banning so called “ conversion therapy “

Slothtoes · 09/10/2023 23:13

Jess P was speaking at the Westminster Hall debate back in the summer about GC issues. I am so pleased she’s continuing to keep talking about this at party conference, thank goodness for that. More power to her elbow.

DameMaud · 09/10/2023 23:18
There are two excerpts here from LWD youtube showing Jess Phillips standing up for single sex provisions in debate. One from 2 weeks ago and one from June. Seeing these, it makes sense she would be speaking at the LWD event. I'm a bit confused.. Is this a very recent turn around then?

TinselAngel · 09/10/2023 23:28

Fuck Jess Philips and her cowardice, waiting until now to speak out. I wonder if she will apologise for being part of the group that wanted reform of the GRA in the first place and for calling the Spousal Exit Clause "awful".

bombastix · 09/10/2023 23:30

And so the Labour wheel turns and all the little feminist Labour MPs turn with it... so predictable.

Still it's a good thing. And a good reminder of what politicians are really like.

Even the SNP have done a 180 on that.

I loathe Phillips as much as anyone TinselAngel, but the more female MPs who ignore the woke bullies and say what they like, the better.

When she apologises for saying Trans Widows Rights should be taken away I'll consider it.

Feministwoman · 10/10/2023 00:30

What @TinselAngel says

IwantToRetire · 10/10/2023 00:35

If I remember from the Westminster Hall debate, JP wasn't exactly full on GC.

She is just very committed to women only services (single sex exemptions) because of her experience from working for a refuge.

So, and I am more than please to be proved it is more, I suspect she is just saying that we need single sex exemptions, and that single sex exemptions mean biological sex. Not as redefined by Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP who say it includes anyone who says they are a woman and if you dont accept this we will pull your funding.

Will be interesting to see. Though presumably this wont include any statements of solidarity with the women who bravely spoke in public (not behind closed doors at a private meeting that was invitation only) about women's sex based right while a baying mob of men tried to drown out their voices.

WinnieFosterFights · 10/10/2023 00:43

I agree with @TinselAngel

Jess is an opportunist. Always has been.

The only positive is that opinions about women's rights must be swinging our way if Jess is working towards remembering what a woman is.

AutumnCrow · 10/10/2023 01:13

I want it crystal clear now from Labour that single-sex exceptions (for same-sex services) are legal and mainstream and will remain so, and that this is predicated on biological sex not 'legal sex'.

I want that cast iron guarantee.

As are the whole of the Tory party on this issue. JP does a lot for women in her work with DV and refuges.

Golden bridge time. But anyone who takes the golden bridge has to be seen to take steps towards it and to listen to those who are calling them across.
