Has Jess Phillips finally found her spine?

I see Jess Phillips spoke on a Labour Women's Declaration platform tonight. Which means at least she's burnt her last remaining bridges to the wokies.

Golden bridge time. But anyone who takes the golden bridge has to be seen to take steps towards it and to listen to those who are calling them across.

Yes. Another suggestion would be apologising for including a male in the list of murdered women.

Floisme · 10/10/2023 07:10

I agree she's an opportunist and ambitious with it. But if ambitious opportunists in the party that's expected to form the next government are deciding it's the right time to speak up then I think that's good. We need the opportunists too.

This has nothing to do with what I might think about her character.

Sausagenbacon · 10/10/2023 07:23

Fwiw I agree with @TinselAngel

StripeySuperNova · 10/10/2023 07:37

If Jess Phillips is just keen on upholding the single sex exceptions then she needs to ask questions about how a service/space/etc. enforces it when a male person's ID all says that he is female. Exactly how do you realistically say, 'no, you're male, get out'?

As are the whole of the Tory party on this issue. JP does a lot for women in her work with DV and refuges.

As someone who has worked on VAWG, Jess' work on DV is what made her betrayal worse imo. She knew the reality of male violence. She knew the most vulnerable women needed her to use her position and platform for them. And what did she do? Pretended no-one cared about this issue on the streets; pulled a 'I'm not like those feminists' when asked to defend academic freedom; put a trans child into the Counting Dead Women list (when their case hadn't even been to court yet so her virtue signalling could have prejudiced the case too), etc, etc.
And the Tories love Jess. Look at how many profiles she's had in Tory-sympathetic papers since she was elected. They've been trying for a long time to position her as a potential leadership candidate.
There are Tories and Labour women who have been fighting MRAs on the trans issue for a long time. Jess deliberately threw women under the bus on numerous occasions. Will she hold the line this time? I wouldn't hold my breath.

Cecilisacaterpillar · 10/10/2023 07:42

Too little too late for me I'm afraid.

Jess P was speaking at the Westminster Hall debate back in the summer about GC issues. I am so pleased she’s continuing to keep talking about this at party conference, thank goodness for that. More power to her elbow.

I thought she was good then.

Clearly carefully worded to both be concise and supportive of women's rights but not cause any back lash from TRAs, via indisputable statements

TodayInahurry · 10/10/2023 07:44

I hope Labour lose millions of votes over this betrayal, how many people are in favour of this evil?

WarriorN · 10/10/2023 07:45

When she apologises for saying Trans Widows Rights should be taken away I'll consider it.

Oh, I didn't know about that

Helleofabore · 10/10/2023 07:47

So she is supposed to think people will believe she has had a turn around? She couldn’t respect the female single sex space that was Counting Dead Women so
has she really had that change of heart?

Or is she like Starmer and is now simply not speaking the other part of her belief- that males with a GRC are legally female and therefore should be in those spaces.

Again the questions need to be asked.

Since when have women’s rights been so difficult to defend in the Labour Party. It shouldn’t be like this.

When have they not. Labour has a long, long history of not defending women's rights. It centres around a man's wage being enough to support a family, so wifey can stay home and cook. It still hangs around and surfaces at any old opportunity

This is not at the main conference, it is a fringe event, the wherabouts of which had to be a closely guarded secret.

RebelliousCow · 10/10/2023 08:10

AutumnCrow · 10/10/2023 01:13

I want it crystal clear now from Labour that single-sex exceptions (for same-sex services) are legal and mainstream and will remain so, and that this is predicated on biological sex not 'legal sex'.

I want that cast iron guarantee.

You are not going to get that. This was a fringe event. Stonewall are hosting their own event at conference - one that hasn't had to be conducted under a cloak of secrecy.

Glamourreader · 10/10/2023 08:14

I never thought that we would have to stand up against the deliberate dismantling of protections for women and girls from predatory men

Yes, that and the throwing transwidows under the bus are the little 'fuck yous' I'm really going to have to try to see past.

But if Weathervane Jess is turning our way, momentum must be with us. That's good.

TinselAngel · 10/10/2023 10:46

Lest we forget.

I think Jess being dispatched for some light terfing in the run up to an election is probably not a coincidence.

Has Jess Phillips finally found her spine?
WarriorN · 10/10/2023 11:12

Thanks, that one had passed me by

WarriorN · 10/10/2023 11:13

Has labour made any comment on what Sunak said about single sex wards in hospitals?

RhannionKPSS · 10/10/2023 11:25

Too little too late from Jess.
Karen Ingala Smith wasn’t invited to the debate today about stopping violence against women and girls. Have a look at her tweets. Joan Smith wasn’t involved, Starmer hasn’t apologized to Joan and Rosie yet.
I don’t trust Jess Philips, her betrayal of women is indeed worse as she is so well aware of the consequences.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 10/10/2023 11:27

RhannionKPSS · 09/10/2023 23:12

Just remember that Labour have stated today that there are committed to banning so called “ conversion therapy “

Transing IS conversion therapy.

RhannionKPSS · 10/10/2023 12:06

I’m well aware that “ transing is conversion therapy “ it’s the ultimate in conversion therapy! Some mealy mouthed words from Jess Philips and others and we are meant to say “ oh well it’s all fine now” Oh do they bloody think so, it isn’t and the devil is in the detail.

Not only was KIS not invited, Jess didn't even mention it to her last night.

RethinkingLife · 10/10/2023 13:14

Just to reinforce that welcoming people across the golden bridge doesn't mean that you trust them or have any expectation that they have done anything other than the expedient.

Ironically, Starmer will see any landside he gets next year as reward for his lukewarm take on women's rights butressed by his spin on trans rights.

In any sane world, the Tories would have either been looking after the country half decently meaning polls would be way closer, and Starmer would not be able to take women's votes for granted.

If he was just in the lead, and internal polling was telling him the trans issue was toxic for a large number of women, do we really believe he wouldn't be adopting a fully GC line?

It's only because his lead is so large he can feel confident in being so "bold" in ignoring women's concerns.

Rosie Duffield is being typically gracious in her comradely comments towards Phillips. But we all know she still feels badly let down. As do we all.

I'm a man with no skin in the game if Starmer opens up more numbers of men IDing as women. Nothing about my life, personal safety changes. I'm not a woman.

But as a person, a citizen and voter, he's insulted my intelligence, and my patience. Phillips is doing her best PR efforts to pour oil on troubled waters.

Those troubled waters aren't being calmed.
