GC & FWR Confessional

GC & FWR confessional

To set the scene, I’m a middle aged mum of three, left leaning, fully GC, old enough to know better, and yet, against my better judgement I find myself liking the following a little more than I should.

Laurence Fox. I’m rewatching Lewis, and I enjoy him in this so much. Maybe it’s the show I’m enjoying, or the character he plays, but either way, I can’t get enough. Except when he’s being a smart arse.

Sam Smith. I love his music. Anything and everything, I must confess. His style of music is nothing at all like I usually enjoy, I’m more alternative/indie like Imagine Dragons, Green Day, the Smiths, or R & B like Beyoncé, Alicia Keyes, Mary J Blige as well as oldies Luther, Ella, Anita Baker. I don’t know if I’m categorising these correctly, but you know what I mean. But anyway, my 12 yr old and I blast Sam Smith on the school run, and I don’t see this changing.

Now I used to have a tiny crush on Russell Brand, however this week wiped that out completely.

Ah, I feel a bit better now.

Need to get anything off your chest/conscience? Feel free to use this safe space for your confession, fellow FWRers.

What were you expecting? They believe one thing doesn't mean they are not good at something else??? People who believe the earth is flat can still be great news anchors, comedians, teachers... purity expectations much?

Where are they putting them?

Where are they putting them?

Usually Twitter.

I'm not saying I think OP is doing that but I understand why PP is cautious about someone with no posting history asking for confessions at 2am.

EffectualElla · 21/09/2023 06:45

I recently name changed and I live in the US. MN can confirm.

The tone policing and troll hunting of FWR lately is getting out of hand. This used to be a great space for all types of talk, even light hearted on a serious subject.

EffectualElla · 21/09/2023 06:49

Here’s another thread that I started pre name change, in a similar vein, which was a great thread to read and chat. I’ve also under numerous names started more serious threads under this subject.

and now I’ll go name change again.

Who would you like to see come out as GC? | Mumsnet

There are a few outspoken women, who I secretly daydream they’re GC. Top of my list would be Oprah. I’d be thrilled if she was a closet GCer. She woul...

I don't disagree that direct accusations are not appropriate but it's completely understandable given the nature of some of the attacks on women on here.

FWIW, I think light-hearted confessions are harmless:

I used to be a Liberal Democrat. I'm so sorry.

pickledandpuzzled · 21/09/2023 07:11

I didn't vote until I was almost 50.

And having had a change of heart then, I find myself in the same position again!

I think we can post confessions without generating anything screenshot worthy!

I like the song 'white lines'. And 'it wasn't me'.

The devil has all the best tunes.

Screenshot or no screenshot, the premise of these confessions is daft.
Correlation in this manner cements the idea of guilt by association. I believe the nice term is "guilty pleasures".

It's not tone policing. We're pointing out that that you are turning nuance into black v white thinking.

TeenEyeroll · 21/09/2023 10:43

I find this subject fascinating- that edge in the psyche where we have two competing reactions to something, a bit like enjoying Michael Jackson’s music, but having sudden flashes of horror, remembering the documentary where his victims and their parents told all about his MO and his evil actions. It reminds me of the ‘snag’ you have to feel in the ether with the ‘subtle knife’, in order to slice a window between two worlds.

The Russell Brand thing gave me very disturbed dreams after the documentary, I feel that he should not be denied the right to have a livelihood though. Especially without a trial. During the documentary I had conflicted feelings because his sexual sadism is horrific and unthinkable, but I even laughed at the footage of some of the jokes he made in the doc. Also, I thought he was fantastic in BBBM - and that was the era he was doing all this - but there was one comment he made that put me off, he joked about a woman being sodomised when ‘she wasn’t expecting it’… I think I stopped watching the programme as a result and felt wary of him ever since. I feel the same way about Seth McFarlane - funny, but I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him.

I too can like Sam Smith and I don’t judge his grim sexual stuff, it makes me laugh.

I think the truest confession for me, is that I now think “OH FUCK OFF” when people complain about social injustices, in a way I didn’t used to. I used to be more curious, caring and concerned, looking to my own behaviour to see if I was at fault and needed to acknowledge my culpability in something. Now it’s just an immediate eyeroll and an ‘o fuck off - take that plank out of your own fucking eye’. I absolutely detest all these stupid ‘awareness’ days and months, where people do pointless virtue signaling, and I can’t believe I even want IWD to fuck off too. I am jaded.

pickledandpuzzled · 21/09/2023 13:55

I think I lack a sense of humour for all that kind of stuff. It's got stronger with age- I just don't find it funny.

Similarly I have lost my tolerance around other issues. It no longer feels fun and edgy and experimental, just disrespectful.

RebelliousCow · 21/09/2023 14:14

I love Made In Chelsea, and I quite fancy Tristan.

Beowulfa · 21/09/2023 14:23

Is it not possible to enjoy Lewis (quality crime drama) just because one of the main actors went a bit bonkers after it was filmed?

The scene in Riders where Rupert Tory-Bastard gives the stereotypical feminist a right good seeing-to is one of my favourites in English literature.

pickledandpuzzled · 21/09/2023 15:14

I have to say I can't watch many many things because an actor has turned out to be an arse of the highest order.

I sort of think I like them, but am always disappointed with the reality. The chocolate is very unchocolatey and the biscuit bit is tasteless and has a gritty texture. A posh version with nice chocolate and a shortbread base would be great! <I may have given this too much thought>. Sorry - I am a traitor, clearly.

Oh you must be very new then as it's been like this for absolute years, in fact it's better now than it was pre-Forstater. 😅

Hotsaucegal · 21/09/2023 16:20

@RebelliousCow MIC is also a guilty pleasure of mine, must say most recent series in corfu was one of the best. Also once thought Tristan was quite fit but suspect he’s a bit of gaslighter.
