I'd say Russell T Davies when he had his drunken rant. I get his concern that lgbt is being fractured. But his absent concern for Women and their rights was palpable. I honestly thought he had more sense.

Just found the piece I meant.

https://www.theguardian.com/books/ng-interactive/2022/feb/19/margaret-atwood-on-feminism-culture-wars

Rather lol that MA says that people aren't male or female, but immediately says clothes are!
"OK, let me say this again,” she says more sharply. “This is going to take a while to settle down, but XY and XX are not the only chromosomal combinations possible. Look it up, OK? This has been in flux for a very long time and in the Bible, a male wearing female clothes would be – ” and she makes a slicing gesture across her neck. “You want to do that? No.”"

(Psst - GCs don't claim that XY and XX are the only chromosomal combinations possible - we are well aware of variations, which largely affect only one sex or the other, and is entirely irrelevant to gender identity anyway).

Surely, surely she must understand that rare chromosomal abnormalities are not at all what is under discussion in this debate?

SlippinJanie · 18/09/2023 18:55

My oldest friend. She thinks I've become right wing. It breaks my heart.

Carouselfish · 18/09/2023 18:56

Eddie Izzard. Thought he was lovelyand no nonsense being a man who liked wearing 'women's' fashion and a good actor.

Bloody hell, Margaret Atwood?!!!

Whatsnewpussyhat · 18/09/2023 18:57

Everyone who blindly goes along with the nonsensical batshit that is gender identity ideology.

Every head teacher who allows external companies who know fuck all about child development, education, or safeguarding to come in and preach utter bollocks to children about gender unicorns etc.

The cowards with power who fucking know it's wrong but refuse to do anything.

Depressingly she comes across as quite muddled about it, but at least - if you read to the end - open to engaging about it.

@MargotBamborough I agree 100% with your assessment of Margaret Atwood and that is PRECISELY why she's disappointed me.

I can be angry at the institutions and people who should know better, but the women who shaped and awoke my feminism who now cravenly stay silent have truly broken my heart.

Gloria Steinem-you could have said something too.

Sadly, Andrea Dworkin and Adrienne Rich passed away before trans was a thing, so I don't know if I'd have had to have my heart broken twice more.

'become right wing'.

Such an odd idea, that all these women who are lifelong feminists/leftwingers would suddenly wake up and decide that no, the ideals and morals they've cleaved to all their bloody life are just a bit dull now, so we're going to go all in on the fascism, just for shits and giggles.

It is dizzy making.

Conversely, did we do a FWR Women of the Year awards at the end of last year? I don't remember it happening, though I was so incandescent with rage at the GRR Bill, I may have missed it.

There was a thread, I think the main name that got mentioned was IamSarah (there may even have been a poem that referenced the fact in a round about sort of way,)

The Guardian and the NHS without a doubt
Followed by Oxfam

The Trade Unions, ( 30 years of subs and activism for all this to go to women's rights being shafted . What a joke! How many women members feel the same and are trapped because we have no where to go and can't risk being without cover in care/service/low paid work? This totally fills me with rage ).
The TUC (ditto)

Keir Starmer. As a former Director of Public Prosecutions who did some good work on improving rape prosecution rates and dispelling rape myths at trials, he will be under no illusions about how dangerous and cunning predatory men can be. The fact he pretends not to be able to join the dots means he’s guilty of the worst kind of cowardice. Reading recent articles about how ambitious he is and will do anything to win, it disgusts me that he’s prepared to endanger women and children to prevail. Words can’t adequately convey my utter contempt for him.

Lilibert456 · 18/09/2023 19:14

Myself.

Cancelledcurio · 18/09/2023 19:15

oh Women's Aid and Rape Crisis. Absolute shame on them and total love and strength to those women defiantly striving to keep same sex provisions for female survivors of male violence.

Why, @Lilibert456 ?

Mary Beard actually admits in the Times article upthread that she doesn't speak out on gender because she's 'a coward'. I suspect that means she's probably tending towards GC because I don't think we're anything to be frightened of. I don't blame her really for wanting to sit this one out. But it's a pretty damning indictment on GI and its supporters, for all that it's unsaid.

I think this has revealed something that was rather lost.

You always have to ask - why does this guy want to wear women's fashion?

In some cases, you get edgy men, often in entertainment, and basically they are looking to do something unusual and get attention. Not many carry on with it past their 20's they usually don't care enough.

But generally, with a guy like EI, so often wearing women's clothes, there is a reason he likes them. It's not that somehow he is just drawn to them aesthetically. Men who are drawn to women's clothes that way like to see them on women, because then the clothes fit properly and look good.

Yes. And Liberty.

Although given what I've since discovered about their historic involvement with PIE, I'm no longer surprised.

Oxfam.
