Brendan O'Neill in the Spectator: The Guardian’s shameful Roisin Murphy review.

People power. My congratulations to the person who started this thread. Seen them anywhere ?

ArabeIIaScott · 08/09/2023 13:53

So the story about Ninja Tune was bollocks. Figures.

RealityFan · 08/09/2023 13:55

But they still cancelled publicity and interviews? And three gigs were pulled?

I don't think there's any evidence Ninja Tunes cancelled anything, is there?

The gigs weren't Ninja Tunes' responsibility.

Potentially Roisin did? Concerned?

There was the Independent piece where the album launch and her career were covered, but the interview was cancelled. I'm sure Róisín didn't cancel it, and the paper didn't, so someone must have done.

ArabeIIaScott · 08/09/2023 14:28

'Most discussions about separating the art from the artist revolve around long-dead painters who abused young women or composers with fishy far-right views. Here we are talking about a singer who wants to protect children from harm. That such a perfectly normal and good moral instinct has been rebranded as ‘bigotry’ is all the proof we need that society’s self-styled moral guardians have lost every bit of the plot.'

RealityFan · 08/09/2023 14:34

Cue Otto English, likening this to the Cat gender school story saying that a fake news story creates this anti-trans buzz. I can write his article for him, so simple do the Left "intelligentsia" hive mind think.

There may have been no Cat gender. And her label may have not cancelled anything.

But there's a relentless campaign against anything which kicks against the groupthink of trans.

So, the girls on the tape, the bigger story was not mystery Cat gender, it was that the teacher berated them for sticking to the material reality of two genders, and desist or move on.

Róisín, the bigger story is not that her publicity may or may not have been hindered. Its that her own label, the people she works with, didn't back her artistic integrity and desire to speak out, and other than one industry figure, noone in the music scene or the arts generally, stood behind her.

The details of a missing interview mean less than the fact she effectively had no allies amongst her peers.

That's the story on cancel culture, especially for woman.

Not so much divide and rule, as isolate and rule.

Arabella, it's a moral crusade from the other side. Róisín is absolutely a witch cut from Satanic cloth.

There's something Old Testament, Crusades, harsh Koranic justice, about the tirades against JKR, Róisín etc.

And the anger in these accusing hordes as people flock to her gigs and buy her new album in droves, must be white hot.

Who's gonna be next? Which fledgling female writer or musician etc is gonna speak up?
I would not blame them if they taped their mouths shut.

Sad times

@RealityFan

There's support behind the scenes but I'd suggest the public support from the audience, has its own part to play.

@RealityFan it's not fake news that The Guardian decided to headline the review of Murphy's album - "A masterful album with an ugly stain" as if the artist having a view that differs from that of the reviewer has somehow tainted their whole output

CorruptedCauldron · 08/09/2023 14:51

It would have been nice if the label had nipped all those rumours about trans charities in the bud and issued a statement unequivocally supporting their artist.

Roisin had the rug pulled from under her feet with no one to turn to as the witch trials began. Getting your card marked so publicly by the gender zealots is not a safe or pleasant situation to be in, particularly if you’re a woman, and everyone knows that. We’ve all seen what happened to JK Rowling for starters - rape threats, death threats, doxxing, so I think it’s negligent, irresponsible and cowardly for Roisin’s musical associates to fail to defend her. They knew what she was facing. She needed urgent back-up and it wasn’t there.

It’s testament to Roisin’s talent and strength of character that she’s proven herself uncancellable, even despite the (Immoral) Guardian trying to burn her at the stake.

That's very good to hear. Unfortunately the edicts bearing down from above, and barbs from the sidelines, are more and more in evidence.

Power to the people!

Biffology · 08/09/2023 14:55

@Goldflap

I think these are good times - the sense of moral superiority of these people is being questioned and is beginning to waver, as people question their motives.

Goldflap · 08/09/2023 14:56

Apologies if it's already been mentioned but does anyone know how I can email the Guardian to give my reasons for cancelling my subscription, I know it won't matter a jot but if lots of people did it would.
