@RealityFan it's not fake news that The Guardian decided to headline the review of Murphy's album - "A masterful album with an ugly stain" as if the artist having a view that differs from that of the reviewer has somehow tainted their whole output

I'm not claiming it is fake. But we're hearing now that the label aren't sending profits to Róisín's least fave charities, as reported. Maybe it's untrue publicity was cancelled? Or maybe this part of the story is true, just not the proceeds part.

RealityFan · 08/09/2023 15:18

CorruptedCauldron · 08/09/2023 14:51

It would have been nice if the label had nipped all those rumours about trans charities in the bud and issued a statement unequivocally supporting their artist.

Roisin had the rug pulled from under her feet with no one to turn to as the witch trials began. Getting your card marked so publicly by the gender zealots is not a safe or pleasant situation to be in, particularly if you’re a woman, and everyone knows that. We’ve all seen what happened to JK Rowling for starters - rape threats, death threats, doxxing, so I think it’s negligent, irresponsible and cowardly for Roisin’s musical associates to fail to defend her. They knew what she was facing. She needed urgent back-up and it wasn’t there.

It’s testament to Roisin’s talent and strength of character that she’s proven herself uncancellable, even despite the (Immoral) Guardian trying to burn her at the stake.

Edited

I know it's not in any way comparable, but I had a bunch of TRAs who copied and pasted my comments on a MN thread onto their angry Twitter thread, musing about my identity, why I was a loser, and fascinatingly, a sell out to the male cause (real Freudian slip there).

It felt genuinely uncomfortable especially as they tried to piece together who I could be.

Evaporated after a couple of dozen posts. But still. Had my user name here been my real name, who knows what might have entailed.

Ramp this up to Eleven with Róisín.

Biffology · 08/09/2023 15:25

@RealityFan

Quite : their tactics run to that kind of pond-life behaviour ; doxxing, etc.

Biffology · 08/09/2023 15:27

In that sense, they use blackmail as a tool against their targets.

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/09/2023 15:29

@RealityFan could well be. I supose my point (badly made!) was that the wider rumours are almost immaterial, what is true and still there in black and white is how shamefully the Guardian have written about her.

Biffology · 08/09/2023 15:39

@Ginmonkeyagain

That article reveals the prejudices of its author.

No argument there. Then again, the writer is deep in the kool aid, she signed the petition to allow anyone to choose the prison that best matches their chosen gender.

Hey. I so wanted to go out with Gillian Anderson when I first clapped eyes on her, but we don't all get what we want.

We can all have our opinions and political outlooks. But to use such an unacceptable slur as "stain"...in the fucking headline title of the piece...and then effectively assault Róisín's character in the piece, using pure propaganda, also as cover to stop the writer being silenced, is a level of vitriol and toadying to the TRAs that should bring great shame to this writer.

Biffology · 08/09/2023 15:53

@RealityFan

'..she signed the petition to allow anyone to choose the prison that best matches their chosen gender.'

And that turned out to be a great idea.. I don't think.

Arf! By their words shall ye know them.

It absolutely explains everything about the person. That they're naive at best, an enemy at worst. And that this political outlook runs through them, to the point they can use the word stain about them.

If she'd had her way, she'd have used something stronger.

There must be a lot of self loathing as well, how can a person so pure of spirit dance to the devil? Well in the case of Róisín, she has all the best tunes.

WorriedMutha · 08/09/2023 16:03

Sonia Sodha has tweeted that she's booked to see her in 2024. I'm looking forward to what will surely be a stokingly good blistering attack in Sunday's Observer.
Am I the only one who hasn't read the Guardian article. The title is disgusting enough. I'm loathe to click on it in case the vile Snipes is paid per click/engagement.

StephanieSuperpowers · 08/09/2023 16:12

I didn't bother reading the review itself but I thought it might be interesting to peruse the comments. I (eventually) found it and comments aren't enabled.

Lottapianos · 08/09/2023 16:15

'Am I the only one who hasn't read the Guardian article. The title is disgusting enough'

No, I can't face it either. Poor Roisin. Anyone would think she was a Holocaust denier or a Nazi or something

WorriedMutha · 08/09/2023 16:26

Damn it Lottapianos, in order to check your comments point I've accidentally clicked on the article. Look what you made me do lol.
There are 1000+ comments on Twitter which is about 999 more than is usual on a Guardian story.
I really have got the rage about this and want to do more than wring my hands.
We have really got to get organised. We hold the majority opinion.

AutumnCrow · 08/09/2023 16:26

This is definitely a Guardian tag-team job.

Snapes wrote the review article, and said what she said using words like 'ignominious' - and all the rest.

The sub-headline content - notably 'ugly stain' - does not appear to have been lifted directly from the published article, but the work of the headline writer / copy editor.

Presumably at least one other person gave it the nod to go 'live'.

Lottapianos · 08/09/2023 16:34

'Damn it Lottapianos, in order to check your comments point I've accidentally clicked on the article. Look what you made me do lol.'

Nope, wasn't me 😁 blame @StephanieSuperpowers !

I agree - though before we begin, let's acnowledge that Twitter is Woke Central, for people who cannot understand - and do not care to live in - the actual, real, world. Which happens to be where we live.

These folk and their ilk write for each other's gratification, in an attempt to re-invent the world in their own image. See up-thread for details of how they seek to protect freedom-of-expression using censorship, practice bigotry in the name of tolerance, etc, etc.

It’s unsettling, and it’s designed to be. Digital pile-ons create a climate of fear and stop people from speaking out. Even though in your case you knew they couldn’t track you down, it’s still unpleasant to know the wolves are circling around you.

This screenshotting tactic, allowing something said on one platform to be freeze-framed and then paraded all over Twitter, is quite chilling.

WorriedMutha · 08/09/2023 17:28

I agree Biff but what to do? I have real life convos with like minded people but you have to feel your way in. Once we realise we are on the same page we let rip.
We will be on the right side of history but how to get there. I sign petitions and have signed the Labour Womens' Declaration. I'm hesitant to sign up to the LGB Aliance conference as I'm not LGB but I would like to show solidarity with them.
Sometimes I think this whole shitshow will end by some almighty accident. Something that just goes too far. Like Isla Bryson put the SNP in the spotlight. A Court case that grabs the mainstream media. An A lister that gets behind the message. Something needs to happen.

Biffology · 08/09/2023 17:28

If I was Roisin my next album would be titled 'An Ugly Stain'.
