Yes, it infuriates me. I was dancing to Moloko at 2am before some of them were even born. How dare they fling around these endless bad faith accusations. See also: "you never cared about women's or children's rights before"

I see Anna Nolan, who grifted a career from coming second in Big Brother 23 years ago, has joined Panti Bliss in kicking Roisin on Twitter. It's always the talentless mediocrities who seem to take great pleasure in this; they enjoy making a mark in whatever way is available to them.

I just about remember when being famous was really reserved for people with talent etc.
But even in these superficial times, how can you remain known for coming second in Big Brother years ago?

Abhannmor · 08/09/2023 08:20

Yes I read the review / hit piece. Very conflicted indeed. And a slight air of desperation about it. She raves about the album partly because she heard it before release and before the controversy.

I'm not competent to say if it is a great album , knowing nothing of that genre. But the fact it is widely acclaimed will make Róisín hard to cancel whatever bitter pills like Snape feel about her.

RoyalCorgi · 08/09/2023 08:21

BaronMunchausen · 07/09/2023 22:29

Laura Snapes comes from a long line of people who use posturing identity politics as misdirection from the immense economic and social privilege that class provides (fees at Laura's independent school in Cornwall are an eyewatering £30,000pa).

Beyond shocked. I need a lie down.

Abhannmor · 08/09/2023 08:40

Julie Bindel tearing the Graun music desk to shreds on X.

Bet JKR is itching to send a Snape themed riposte as well....

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/09/2023 08:47

It seems an odd thing to bring up in a review. As far as I know Rosin Murphy's views on puberty blockers are not covered in the album or in her on stage act, it was a private comment on Facebook.

Does Laura Snapes mean then that anything an artist produces is irredeamably tainted if the artist has views that the consumer of that art may not share? Is that standard applied equally to all artists and forms of art?

Didn't our little friend who bravely and doggedly attempted to sabotage Kath Stock's Oxford Union speech, cunningly dressed as a piece of low level furniture or room ornament, also come from a gilded private school background?

Certainly did. Ditto Laurie Penny. I think most of the high-profile trans zealots (especially the female ones, for some reason) have had an expensive private education. What a waste of money - all those hundreds of thousands of pounds and they can't even master basic logic.

Abhannmor · 08/09/2023 09:10

Well said @Ginmonkeyagain . There's some aspects of Islam I disagree with , for example, but I wouldn't expect a journalist to spend half a review of a Sinéad O Connor album attacking her beliefs.

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/09/2023 09:16

Well as others have suggested I don't for one moment think Laura Snapes does actually think that. It is more , for her, a necessary addendum to signal to people in her circle that despite giving the album a glowing review she has the "right" opinion on Murpby's personal views.

A "do it to Julia" moment if you like.

Imagine a school environment where there is such encouragement and amplification of "high worth" views. I'd say you'd come out thinking that any other views to your own were worth jack shit.

You'd be on the Right Side Of History TM, all those GC feminists and Helen types that went to lesser schools are not only wrong, but fair game for humiliation.

Snapes piece is not journalism in any meaningful sense of the word, unless we're now saying subjects are fair game for Gotchas and OpEds, the full bias of the writer dripping from every word.

If so, then The Guardian need to retitle themselves a Sixth Form rag, so far are they from reporting the news and seeking the truth.

NecessaryScene · 08/09/2023 09:49

Not that it really needed to be "journalism" - it was supposed to be a music review!

Has any music review link on Twitter/X ever managed to earn a Community Note before?

Rubidium · 08/09/2023 09:52

The Financial Times (!) have given the album 4/5 stars, and to quote from the review:
“An album review isn’t the place to adjudicate which opinions a person should or shouldn’t be allowed to post on a personal Facebook page. But it is the place to judge whether an album deserves to be heard. And Hit Parade does."

That’s how you do it, Laura.

@RealityFan

Let's not forget that Ms Snipe is absolutely and completely and totally entitled to have her views published in print because really you people just don't ever seem to understand that she's jolly important and can you actually read anyway and what's more who asked you to have an opinion shouldn't you be at work or something oh I see you're a feminist daddy told me about those well I'm a better feminist than you are you haven't even been to Gstaad let alone know where it is Gervaise fetch me a glass of water sweety mummy's feeling feint no not from the tap you oik fetch Valentina what do you mean she's in Kingston it's not her night off not for another three weeks...

It seems to be mostly the 'allies', though? I can't imagine these women allowing their children to take puberty blockers or have surgery. It seems to me like they are using trans people/gender-confused children as some kind of martyrs-by-Munchausen.

Biffology · 08/09/2023 11:56

@ArabeIIaScott

It's just another opportunity for them to remind us of how they stand above the hoi-polloi.. They're so pained and so conflicted .

Roisin doesn't fit their narrative any more - not that she ever did, in any meaningful way.

ArabeIIaScott · 08/09/2023 11:56

Hit Parade is #5 on the new release album chart. Which seems pretty good to me.

Helen Joyce pithily put it. Trans themselves are less the issue in this battle of ideas, than the allies, the vast vast majority being cishetero. For them, they had no PoC civil rights battles to truly fight, or gay liberation.
This was all well before they were born.
Sure, a few BLM and Extinction Rebellion demos got their juices flowing, but the real emotional release comes regarding trans liberation, this is the neo religious one, the existential one, the one that really differentiates your herd, and gives you full reign to hit hard as you purity spiral down.

Only the tiniest minorities are anti gay or anti black or don't care for the planet. But the schism in trans is absolutely there (nearest thing to it being Remain Leave divide on Brexit). And thus TRA demands radical adherence, magical thinking as reality, and constant demonstration of true belief.

That's why the Guardian TRA reviewer of Róisín has to show her credentials and mastery of fake news and propaganda, not just as an addendum or a seperate piece, but within the piece.

Trans are one thing. Their allies are a whole other species.

Deliberately calling it a 'personal' Facebook page does rather indicate what the reviewer's opinion would be, if they were allowed to give it.

Brewdug · 08/09/2023 12:46

Utterly stunned by the Guardian review. Two small things apart from the obvious that leapt out were castigating Murphy for "characterising 'terf' as a misogynist slur" - clearly there's no talking sense anyone who sees that any other way - and the pitying, patronising observation that it is "perhaps telling" Murphy has been her own manager for two years. Ie, someone with more sense should have stopped her and corrected her thinking, and now the album is "DOA" and it's her own stupid middle-aged hateful fault.

Nearly 1000 Twitter comments underneath the post now so they're probably just delighted with the engagement.
