In my experience the Guardian music writers are all awful sneery wankers.

WarriorN · 07/09/2023 22:15

Awww that's his best yet, hands down 🥲

Laura Snapes comes from a long line of people who use posturing identity politics as misdirection from the immense economic and social privilege that class provides (fees at Laura's independent school in Cornwall are an eyewatering £30,000pa).

WorriedMutha · 07/09/2023 22:31

I still get free Guardians by virtue of my Waitrose card rewards. It has become a parody of its former self. This has to be the last straw. Hopefully Sonia Sodha restore sanity.

Slothtoes · 07/09/2023 22:33

Sonia Sodha is awesome!

RealityFan · 07/09/2023 22:33

Is she the new editor?

WarriorN · 07/09/2023 22:35

Is she? She's the observer's...

Why are we praising Sonia re The Guardian?

WarriorN · 07/09/2023 22:40

Sonia has already commented iirc.

She often sweeps in on a Sunday with a stonking take down

Wot I posted upthread, Laura is obviously a true believer. Doesn't mean she wasn't scared of them coming after her. She wouldn't be the first tra who's been eaten by her own. Not gonna waste time or brain space worrying about her. In the review she also seems to try to give the credit for the music to the guy Roisin worked with.

Mr Menno is awesome.

Another correction from my pp. I thought the pubmed 'article' linked in the Guardian review had been debunked.

Slothtoes · 07/09/2023 22:57

Good Lord, what am I reading, what a bizarre J’accuse of a ‘review’. Roisin hasn’t done anything wrong. She’s a hugely talented older woman in a vastly misogynistic industry who has made what sounds like a beautiful album several years in the making. How dare Laura Snape (with fulll responsibility resting on the editors who signed off this text) assert that she’s ‘tainted’ and that her work is ‘tainted’. Don’t be so fucking ridiculous.

Come back with this dilemma when a musical artist has actually hurt children- not when they’ve only expressed extremely valid and widely held concerns for the welfare of vulnerable children.

Would be interested to see the debunking. I had a quick look over the paper. It's unusual in that the introduction seems to preempt the research findings, refers to an already existing "robust evidence base", and bemoans legislation criminalizing gender-affirming medical care for minors.

The sample size was 104, including 63 "transmasculine" youths, 27 "transfeminine" youths and 10 "nonbinary or gender fluid" youths. So predominantly girls and young women, most of whom are given menstrual suppression medication.

RevUlsion · 07/09/2023 23:32

Roisin's album launch in Kingston tonight. A few headlines:

• No sign of protests – before, during or after. I didn't hear anybody mention the puberty blockers furore at all.
• Gig was Rosin and a guy with a Spanish guitar, doing pared-back acoustic versions of new album and old songs. Overall feel was quite flamenco.
• Audience response was loud and ecstatic.
• Roisin made no reference to recent events, but seemed genuinely moved at the warmth of the audience. At the end she said, 'Thank you so, so, so much.'
• I got the impression most of the audience were fans, who couldn't care less about recent events. It's easy for those of us who care about gender issues to imagine it's on everybody's mind, and everybody must have a view on it. I mentioned her puberty blockers comment to the friend I went with. He said, 'Oh really? Hadn't heard about that. Yeah, she's probably right.'

As I always say it is worth pointing out any factual inaccuracies the letters or the readers’ editor

BaronMunchausen · 08/09/2023 00:58

One of the more obvious problems with the paper Snapes cites is the short-term period of the study (12 months). It does not in any way address concerns about the long-term impact of puberty blockers, and an intention to follow up the cohort is conspicuously absent from the paper.

Biffology · 08/09/2023 01:16

When Mr Menno quotes the popular opposition to this attempt at cancelling, he refers to a process that we observed - and took part in - in real time.

There was a time when the push-back was just us. , for all we knew. But we stuck to our task and applied ourselves to understanding the problem.

Tea and medals all round.

Hope it goes well RevUlsion Wine

I love that some people have newly found her and love her

I'm so fucked off with the ones
Who proclaim women saluting her no nothing of her music; most of us are her generation.

Yes, it infuriates me. I was dancing to Moloko at 2am before some of them were even born. How dare they fling around these endless bad faith accusations. See also: "you never cared about women's or children's rights before"

I see Anna Nolan, who grifted a career from coming second in Big Brother 23 years ago, has joined Panti Bliss in kicking Roisin on Twitter. It's always the talentless mediocrities who seem to take great pleasure in this; they enjoy making a mark in whatever way is available to them.

PinkCherryBlossoms · 08/09/2023 06:56

Anna Nolan?! She's got some fucking notions, that's for sure.

WarriorN · 08/09/2023 07:00

To be honest, they go low, she's going hiiiiigggghhh 🎉

I woke too early and put the album on to play on repeat, went back to sleep (had to mute so Dh wasn't grumpy and confused). I figure each stream adds to the charts.

Listening now, some excellent choons
