These kiddies are not Left at all though , @RebelliousCow . Not remotely interested in Class , which if you're a socialist, is the main axis of oppression, so to speak. They couldn't care less about the material conditions of the poor. They're easily bought off with rainbows and gendered souls.

The actual Left meanwhile strives to Conserve things like free health , education, social housing and public transport. Far too boring for these prancing Lord Fontleroys. Brendan O Neill, Claire Fox , Kenan Malik and many other critics of gender woo were all Communists originally. Quite revealing imo.

To be honest I do find that some of the most worthwhile and interesting thinkers, are those that have travelled from the Left ( including Living Marxism) towards more liberal stances.

Abhannmor · 05/09/2023 15:16

Ha yes I know what you mean. I'm no more in tune with their new politics than I was enamoured of their old rigid ultra leftism. But this lot and others - the Hitchens brothers eg - are bloody good debaters, their skills sharpened by immersion in dialectical materialism blah blah.

This can make them uncomfortable bedfellows. And of course they are always right now just as they had the 'correct line ' in 1981. The year I met some of them - also the year Billy Bragg gave up his music ambitions and joined the British Army. They make bold assertions and use catchy phrases.

I still recall Claire Fox roaring ' SIT DOWN!' at a couple who tried to go for a piss before our coach moved off to a demo. A habit of which she never subsequently tired. She likes a good shout. We need these stormtroopers I guess. But when this bloody war is over.....

AutumnCrow · 05/09/2023 15:58

Good to see the Mail use the phrase ‘anti gender ideology campaigner’ instead of the usual nonsense.

Biffology · 05/09/2023 16:14

@Abhannmor

You must have some stories ! As it is, I haven't seen any of these people you've mentioned say anything other than advocate for personal freedom - indeed, returning to the main subject of our discussion, Roisin has said she isn't political. Fair enough.

Our problem is that artistic matters have become politicised, to a point where there are influential people, who aren't prepared to allow art to be apolitical.

Indeed, I suspect what went on is that someone tried to get her to do active things for their cause - perhaps become a spokesperson of some sort - and she didn't want to do it. Hence where we are now.

Biffology · 05/09/2023 16:30

As for the idea that 'these people have their uses' , I'd put that one on the back-burner.. Simply because it's kinda what the activists thought of Roisin, in a way ?

Biffology · 05/09/2023 16:46

The push-back against the cancellers need not involve any leftist politics by-the-way : It boils down to two propositions :

(1) Can a mother air her concerns about children's welfare ?
(2) Can she do that in private ?

The issue involved does prompt some quite misogynistic opposition, on both counts. But you haven't got to be political in any way, to see that opposition for what it is.

Abhannmor · 05/09/2023 17:50

I agree totally that it's really a question of common sense and basic decency. It's just I've had a nose full of ppl tying this nonsense to the left - including ' leftists ' like OJ , Sarkar and Bragg. You also get loads of - often American- thickos saying ' this is where feminism has got us'.
Trying to map US experience onto Europe is another mistake I think. Anyway great news from John Boyne / Glinner!

Biffology · 05/09/2023 18:00

@Abhannmor

Indeed - and I hope it builds into something meaningful. I'd forget about OJ , Sarkar and Bragg as they want mouth-pieces. They aren't leftists but, essentially, celebtrities. Meanwhile the US situation is in the toilet.

Take another look at that Manifesto (!) I wrote and you'll see there's no mention of politics in there. Which, today, amounts to a political statement. Alas.

Biffology · 05/09/2023 18:03

Ask Brendan O'Neill to sing a song and who knows..? Likewise, setting Roisin up as a political commentator might not make the best use of her talents.

Biffology · 05/09/2023 18:14

I'm beginning to suspect someone asked to to do somehting like write a song about someone, or go in the paper and say certain things - and she didn't want to do it.

You can imagine a sort of Live Aid scenario, let's all go down a certain road..?

Biffology · 05/09/2023 18:19

And in such a scenario, perhaps there's a veiled threat, there - do it or else ?

Biffology · 05/09/2023 18:27

The clues are in that statement

Anyone who has the means should download or otherwise purchase some of Roisin's music. That's the best way to show she has support, IMO.

WarriorN · 06/09/2023 07:21

I've been playing her latest album (what's there) on Apple Music is it is just really good. Fader is so catchy

Read the statement again and it's really not an apology for her views, just that she's not as knowledgeable to construct the arguments, she's knows people who are, and she doesn't owe anyone anything, but she is sorry it's caused chaos and upset.

Tbh I think the mainstream music industry and radio etc will just ignore and play her regardless.

If anything, the publicity surrounding it may have a rebound effect.

The trans charity thing is unfounded and I would bet breach of contract.

Yes . The more you look at her statement....it is cleverly crafted. She hasn't given anything away , repeated no orthodox dogma. They've forced bigger stars to recant. So I think this is a watershed moment.

WarriorN · 06/09/2023 08:33

Let's hope so.

I've spent more time looking at her work visually through all this and she really is a pure cross disciplinary artist of the type we don't commonly have anymore.

Yes. This revenge culture needs to be thoroughly defeated because it's turning violent now.

It's not on the other charts yet because it's not out, I guess. Be interesting to see how it does.
