The so called progressive left has become so vitriolic and poisonous that it will inevitably destroy itself. The level of toxicity and hatred of anything which resembles in any way 'conservatism' is bizarre.

RebelliousCow · 05/09/2023 09:46

I suspect that some of this tendency to lionise youth and decry age that we have witnessed in recent times is behind this vitriol. Youth is associated with rebelliousness and age is associated with calcification. Things have got seriously out of kilter and have become so extreme.

You wouldn’t think American Pharma have the Opioid crisis to learn from.

I think it's Roisin criticising Big Pharma that's really riled them (as well as the obvious: daring to be a woman who won't wheesht).
Makes it clear in just a few words that she's a bit on the left, a bit anti capitalist, and definitely not coming at this from the same place as piers et al.

@CrossPurposes , @WarriorN

I hear Mr Bragg is, as I write, drawing up his own Banifesto For The Arts

Nah- then who would he feel superior to? He lives for this shit.

@RebelliousCow

Is there an element of indoctrination at work, here ?

Abhannmor · 05/09/2023 10:40

These kiddies are not Left at all though , @RebelliousCow . Not remotely interested in Class , which if you're a socialist, is the main axis of oppression, so to speak. They couldn't care less about the material conditions of the poor. They're easily bought off with rainbows and gendered souls.

The actual Left meanwhile strives to Conserve things like free health , education, social housing and public transport. Far too boring for these prancing Lord Fontleroys. Brendan O Neill, Claire Fox , Kenan Malik and many other critics of gender woo were all Communists originally. Quite revealing imo.

Leftist Authoritarianism.

It sneaks up and then before you know it you've a dictator on your hands.

I don't know if anyone else listens to Wave 105 FM (Planet Radio) but it has a big reach. Anyway the morning show host Mark Collins played Moloko's Sing It Back about 50 minutes ago. After it was finished, he mentioned Roisin Murphy by name, and said that a bit later he would be playing her new song with Jessie Ware.

I emailed him a thank you for playing and showcasing Roisin Murphy's music and he responded positively. (Quick one liner from him but he's running a live radio show!)

Oh he's just mentioned Roisin Murphy and Jessie Ware again, and that he'll be playing Freak Me Now in a bit.

@WarriorN

I'd suggest that what we're witnessing is a politicisation of cultural affairs (and vice-versa) . By rights, politics should stay out of the arts (insisting on vice-versa might be a bit excessive) but while cancel culture is around, it has to be pushed back against by everyone, including people who are uninterested in politics - simply because freedoms and rights are being diminished.

Link3 · 05/09/2023 11:18

Tom Dunne, he of the wishy washy article upthread, chose Roisin's album as 'Album of the week' on Irish Radio last night. Full of praise. Her cancellation was briefly discussed. He and the host said that in light of the fact that her record company was refusing to promote it, they had to do their bit.

WarriorN · 05/09/2023 11:49

@Biffology the arts throughout history have always been political and used as cultural propaganda; organised religion used visual art when few were literate and the powerful have always been the patrons to the arts. The bard's role was to politically spin and the painter's to sanitise and aesthetically manipulate.

The modern age is different in terms of freedom of the masses to be patrons but also, as here, to 'cancel' at will. We think art is free expression but it's not. It's a fucking mess because it's all commercialised. Artists need commercial services to help them reach platforms.

Brag doesn't recognise his own nor the place of the arts in all this but appears to think he does.

If you're going to be political in the arts you must recognise your duty to respecting basic principles of democracy and free speech. (The irony is this isn't about politics; it's about medicine. Which has been politicised.)

On a personal note, I didn't go into art as a profession as there's no money in it (despite selling half my degree show) and I frankly felt I would be selling my soul to the devil as it was all about PRing yourself which I'm shit at.

Roisin said on woman's hour most albums are one deal only these days, which is lucky. She also made it first and then touted it around.

It will stand on its own. If the company are doing what they say re donations to trans charities, shame on them.

It looks like tides are turning though. Boyne's apology to Glinner is massive and off the back of <all this>.

I mean, the FUCKING GALL of these people to be merrily playing artists who may have or have sexually abused minors in the past and discussing the "separation of the artist and their crimes" against the witch hunt of a woman standing up for the safeguarding of children.

Fucking hypocrites.

@WarriorN

There's a very spicy article out there, perhaps on someone like Germaine Greer's hard-drive, about how a mother's concern for her children - and, by extension children in general, is not a political football, for the rest of us to kick about - let alone burst.

I'm sure I can hear typing..

Which is actually quite a brave thing to do, in an era where Is She Ideologically-Acceptable has been trumping all other concerns..

WarriorN · 05/09/2023 12:20

Emily Maitlis rt Boyne's tweet about Roisin

He's doing an analogy with Sinead, (not ideal) but about her treatment rather than what she'd think.

Maitlis will surely know Hannah Barnes. Or at least, her book. (We all know about JKR.)

I think what makes this cancellation particularly egregious, and potentially one public lynching too many leading to a rebound and eventual reset, is the combination of factors specific to Roisin's case.

She has feet in both camps, both the older GC female audience who appreciate her no nonsense older woman succeeding in a man's world success, and the younger blue hairs who only see her queer friendly and inclusive schtick. Everyone wants to dance to her.

Her comments were clearly private, thus uncensored and with maximum emotion but fully balanced with realism and rigour. No anti trans rant was this. And we really hate a snitch.

And that a scalp was collected the same time that three others, men, weren't (Cooper, Santana, Ne Yo), in addition to other male "transgressors" seemingly with burnished credentials (Gervais etc). The bullying all on one community only.

And that the inability to ruin one GC woman, JKR, means anger turned onto the next visible successful woman who dares speak (even in private). Enough is enough.

Others were burnt, but this one has extra levels of iniquity.

And it's come in this year of 2023 where No Debate is over, and the balloon of pomposity of support for Lia Thomas, Isla Bryson, Dylan Mulvaney, Mika Minio, SJB etc is pricked.

Maybe in 2019, or even 2022, the scolds would be holding the line. In 2023 and onwards, that line has moved.

As more and more artists speak out, we'll see just how fragile and fraught the Bragg contingent is, ie of art only within the tight confines of the day, at the behest of a moral line made on behalf of the artist.

Whatever another artist feels about what she wrote, even if they disagree, they surely feel strongly about autonomy.

They can't believe in artistic integrity and autonomy, and support Bragg at the same time.

Its another zero sum game in a philosophy that is only zero sum games.

Biffology · 05/09/2023 12:36

@WarriorN

Brendan O'Neill's article is coming at this from a very specific angle.. But he was first to address what was going on, with his Spectator article.

As long as cancel-culture gets smashed to bits, never to return, we can argue about the politics of it all, as much as we like, afterwards : who's left, who's right and who got left back the changing-rooms...

As we'll have the requisite freedoms to actually do that ?
