Well, look to Bette Midler and Macy Grey.

IcakethereforeIam · 03/09/2023 11:38

Thanks, I think, for flagging the Tom Dunne article. I read it as someone has taken the trouble to archive it. Does he always write so vacuously? He doesn't offer support, he doesn't condemn the witchburners, he just seems to chide Roisin for 'catching their eye', says a few nice things about her new album and oops! bad timing! I'm glad he's finding it so amusing.

StephanieSuperpowers · 03/09/2023 11:53

Yeah, whatever you say, say nothing or expect a transcellation.

Biffology · 03/09/2023 12:04

@IcakethereforeIam , @StephanieSuperpowers

I suppose he thinks he's being witty and clever - but that idea of 'catching the eye' of the witch-burners is telling, isn't it ?

We've got people who want to attack women's rights, those are prepared to defend women's rights and those who regard all of this as entertainment

This guy's attitude is pushing me in the direction of the hard-core people, as they seem to be the only ones who actually give a 5hit ?

There's self-preserving hypocrites out there, Mr Dunne... Are you one of them ?

You just know that in years to come, this no mark will claim he was on her side, or he's a both sides kinda guy, that it was all a fuss about nothing, because, look, we're all here, aren't we?

He has a priceless asset, an outlet to talk to the world. And he wastes it on witty asides.

A witty aside would be commenting wryly on Sam Smith is a gimp costume.

The cancelling of Róisín by the mob requires people in his position to speak out. Especially because you deep down totally agree with her.

I really hated it when Trump erupted in 2016 and bandied "fake news" about. Surely this charlatan is just grandstanding. If he was right about one thing, it's this.

TeenEyeroll · 03/09/2023 12:15

I haven’t rtft but surely there must be a way to make this backfire on Ninja Tune? The fact that they gag their artists. It’s all very fascist.

Biffology · 03/09/2023 12:26

..On the subject of charlatans, here's Our Tim. And the non-charlatan Charlatans, with an apt one.

'i ain't knockin' all you've done.
just when you're thinkin' things over,
oh yeah you found your set of vows,
and all your friends feel disappointed,
cos they're not your friends now,'

Unlike Bud Light, Target, Costa, Body Shop etc where boycotting is the order of the day, I think this would be wrong for Róisín. The TRA blue hairs are already doing this, thus plummeting sales brand her.

She needs her sales to be greater than ever, success for this album could not be easily spun as justification for the label mistreating her.

Biffology · 03/09/2023 12:39

Call me bloody-minded but sales and all of that are secondary to me. Smoking out these people and getting them to show their hand is much more important.

She's nice to them, they inveigle their way into her confidence. Then they start marginalising everyone else in the audience, so it becomes all about them. Then it gets ugly.

Roisin isn't having any of that and, in her characteristic way - which I've witnessed first hand - tells them to get out of her face.

The people who want to cancel her now are not admirers of the arts or, particualrly, of her. you can see that in their reaction to her statement, which basically boils down to 'you do the politics, lads, I'll do the music'

They just wanted a sock-puppet.

Biffology · 03/09/2023 12:50

Thankfully, there are signs of gay and TG people going online to say 'fair enough' about her not wanting to become a political activist. Maybe politics doesn't belong in the arts at all ?

I'd suggest that the fight against cancel culture is our fight and the cancelling is actually aimed at us, Joe and Josephine Public.

These people are, ultimately, saying do you want this to happen to you ?

I wish her female high profile friends and fans would speak up. People like Sharon Horgan. From what I know of her there is no way she believes TWAW but she stays silent to protect her career.

Colour me shocked by Horgan's silence. But then Irish luvvies seem to over compensate in their desperation to look progressive and Liberal at any cost.

Honorable exceptions of course!

SecondRow · 03/09/2023 13:18

I came on to see if this article has been posted. I highly recommend reading it to put Róisín in the Irish context from which she emigrated (perhaps wisely, though as Eilis writes, to what corner of the globe could she flee now?)

As for the Times piece though, I find the "it doesn't matter WHAT the controversy is" a bit... convenient. He may be wryly sympathetic or whatever his schtick is, but it's not at all a similar situation as if she had voiced an opinion on, I don't know, Ukraine or Israel or abortion, is it? It's another level and he's staying nice and safe.

Biffology · 03/09/2023 13:20

It looks like time to bring in the idea of moral equality of every citizen . What this means is that no person is of greater significance than another, on questions of morality.

An influencer with a million 'followers' does not speak with the voice of a million people. Each and every one of those followers is an individual, in their own right.

Seen from this persoective, the commands of those influencers can be seen for what they are, pompous and unelected 'leaders' . They lead nobody.

In that sense, they get the best of both worlds, shouting the odds to the rest of society, whilst being anonymous enough to remain unaccountable for their actions. It's time to strip them of their delusions of grandeur and power.

I have daydreams.

One is that the "celebrities" of today agree to be interviewed, nothing off limits.

Say, Sharon Horgan, Phoebe Waller Bridge, Dr. Brian Cox, Adele, Dara O'Briain, the Von Tulleken twins. Etc etc.

And on walk on the great interviewers of the past...Brian Walden, Sir Robin Day, Jeremy Paxman, Parky, let's throw in Andrew Neill for good measure.

And the Q's come...what do you think to the Cass Report and warning signs from European pediatricians, the push to cancel JKR, Glinner, now Róisín, etc etc?

Just what pandemonium would ensure, after bullish answers from our useless celebs on global warming, Tory lies, anti vaxxers, Trump, # MeToo, if these Q's on trans and cancel culture came straight, and no obfuscation allowed?

Abhannmor · 03/09/2023 13:31

Eilís O Hanlon is pretty far right on most things.

But where is the poxy Irish left? One of my neighbours is running for Sinn Féin here. I will defo bring this up with him. And People Before Profit though I suspect they are a lost cause now.

O Briain , Norton , U2 , Enya. Rich and untouchable. Yet heedless and spineless.

Biffology · 03/09/2023 13:42

@Abhannmor

Busy being poxy ? I get the impression that left-wing politics stopped being working-class and political and retreated into being middle-class and cultural, some time ago.

Hence the confusion about Oliver Anthony in the US.

I appreciated this article though. McGahern retained his dignity and was feted as one of our great writers in later years. Hypocrisy will always be with us, we can only be responsible for our own integrity I suppose.

I think I will buy Róisín's music accepting the risk that a few pence goes astray somewhere, the message to her is as PPs said to just keep being herself and making music.

MavisMcMinty · 03/09/2023 14:22

I’m going to buy the album. Boycotting it because I object to the profits going to a trans charity would be pointless, and indistinguishable from me boycotting it because I agree she’s a transphobe, which she isn’t.

It would be so brilliant if it went to number 1!

RealityFan · 03/09/2023 14:34

I can't say I know much about Róisín. Has she been outspoken before about anything? What's she like in interviews, carefully diplomatic, or carefree and confessional?
Some stars are super predictable, they wear and speak their "brand". Others are pretty spontaneous and unpredictable.
Some are passive and cagey. Some are very much out there.

Where does she come re all this? How do we think she's feeling about all this? No publicity, no interviews, three cancelled gigs, the majority of social media mixed and often downright hostile, not much support from peers.

Very much, nothing to see here, move along now.

Eilis O'Hanlon is not far-right, that's ridiculous and slanderous. If you call people like her (conservative with a small c on some issues) "far right", then you won't have any words left if you encounter the actual far right.

I think the definition of far right must have changed so!! Being gender critical does not make one far right, no matter how much the trans movement peddle this misinformation.
