I've loved her music since long before most of the people trying to destroy her now were even born.

Sorry to intrude on your moment of ecstasy as yet another talented, intelligent, charismatic woman is forced to pretend to kowtow to the bullshit dominant ideology.

Biffology · 01/09/2023 01:12

They say the Ninja tune guys went to Oxford, well, so did I - I spent my time in the company of the very first female fellow in an Oxford college, the redoubtable Carol Clark. It was an honour to be there but you didn't half earn it.

Anyway, there I am, some years later, on Facebook, with Roisin Murphy, in her behind-the-scenes area. A fascinating experience but you'd better not be slacking intellectually because she's right back at you, to explain yourself.

She never begged me to do anything but I suspect that was because I was credited with a bit more wherewithal, to the point where we're not piddling about. It was endlessly challenging but endlessly exhilarating.

I suppose if I thought something but didn't know why, I'd be in serious trouble.

Biffology · 01/09/2023 01:54

And this is what I think happened. Someone has been asked to explain why they think what they think and they have resorted to calling her a TERF, in an attempt to bat it back. Rather than acknowledge the complexities of the treatments currently on offer, they've resorted to making threats, which they then have had to act upon. Maybe pride really does come before a search for the truth, for some. I suspect this is why Roisin made the 'grovelling apology' : I've set my pride to one side, as a result of your betrayal of my privacy.'

Good points biff.

Totalism and authoritarianism

OP posts:
RebelliousCow · 01/09/2023 07:58

Biffology · 01/09/2023 00:05

@PaperWalkAndTalk, this is a political approach which is termed totalism , in which there cannot be any acknowledgement of nuances or shades of meaning - such features of the human condition being regarded as forms of dissent.

I note that there are people who are prepared to allow violence to be regarded as a collateral effect - i.e a formally-negligible one, which must be rationalised away - to achieving their aims, which must be realised absolutely.

Totalistic approaches to social and/or political questions tend to reach for authoritarianism, as a means of making those approaches workable on an every-day basis.

Otherwise known as TYRANNY - the most corrupted and abusive form of power. Rooted in fear.

There's nothing cool about being a screaming idiot. Being 'cool' is about being being an uncompromising individualist who doesn't kow tow to the crowd.

RebelliousCow · 01/09/2023 08:16

This sort of destructive conflagration tends to light a passionate fire in those subject to it. It will certainly be a test of her integrity and willingness to stand by what she knows to be true.

I'm assuming she's comfortably off and cancellation won't impoverish her in a financial sense.

Yes I think you've cracked it @Biffology . Someone she trusted has betrayed her and thrown her to the dogs. Well here's an old Irish proverb : -

Fillean an Feall ar an bhFeallaire.

Treason rebounds on the traitor.

Also:

If they are refusing to promote her album, she may well have a legal case against them, for breach of contract.

She certainly has one under the Equality Act, for discrimination over her protected belief that TWAM.

Well the cool ones will doubtless stay fans? Not all LGB and even T agree with trans rights ideology.

People are afraid of trans activists because the movement covertly gained influence in all the powerful institutions. Reverse grass roots.

You may be "right side of history" because history is always retold and controlled by whichever men are in power. And make no mistake this is a men's rights movement.

But trans activism can never be cool or sexy. It's too.... Controlling? Like the kid who can never get round to playing the fun imaginary games because they spend all break time trying to set the rules. It's too insecure in its own beliefs (hence the need to silence dissent). It's also mind numbingly dull.

Biffology · 01/09/2023 09:53

@RavingStone

Perhaps they want to own something that isn't theirs to own, a bit like what happened in Daniel Susskind's Perfume.

You can only have the butterfly in a display cabinet, in your possession, if you kill it. Sensible people let that butterfly flit about and do what it does best.

All logical roads lead to insisting on that freedom. Plant some flowers if you feel that strongly about it. But do no harm.

The lyrics of this song hold a clue for us if you want to be the one who loves most of all , like you're in a competition, win at all costs.

How the hell are you going to make that work, without recourse to what has been resorted to, in this ugly situation ?

Thankyou @Abhannmor . Wonder if Roisin has had this on her stereo, just recently..

Ha yes indeed. Love her in that photo. Not taking any chances of the bar closing. Strong woman and she will come through this.

RealityFan · 01/09/2023 10:35

For me, this is the only cancel culture story in town. Yes, there are others (Alice Cooper, Farage de-banking).

But this is the scalp. Woman, successful, outspoken...if Roisin can be brought to heel, publicly censured and humiliated, and there is no blowback, then every woman in the public eye is fair game.

Alice Cooper and Farage are too ugly, too bloody minded, too male to be made to shut up. Roisin is the perfect catch, snare her successfully, and what other established or up and coming woman is going to risk it?

JKR was always an outlier with her wealth and iconic status. Roisin and her like are the real prize.

RavingStone · 01/09/2023 10:43

@Biffology totally forgot about that book! I read it as a brain-not-matured teen who thought they were very clever. I loved it. Made my poor incredibly empathic mum read it too and she was unsettled for weeks.

Raggammuffin · 01/09/2023 10:55

Yeh the spectator article identified it, roisins apology contained the line 'I should have known I was stepping out of line". Nigel farrage never felt that he was stepping out of line.

RealityFan · 01/09/2023 10:56

The biggest women in pop and dance must be aware of Roisin's story.
Beyonce, Adele, Taylor, Bjork (who have I missed out?).
Plus some previous big hitters.
Are any of them gonna speak up and support their sister, and critically for free speech and artistic freedom? Maybe even for child rights?

Can you imagine the power of media energy focussing on this is even just one massive figure in female music came out to support Roisin unequivocally?

Even some male figures would be nice and helpful.

One lives in hope.

I feel confident none of the American stars will, the landscape on this looks very different over there. I’d like to think more British pop stars might but I don’t think it’ll be in Roisin’s defence particularly. I don’t know about people like Adele, she’s the same sort of age as me (mid 30s) and the very very vast majority of my friends don’t give two hoots about this stuff one side or the other.

CorruptedCauldron · 01/09/2023 11:09

Imagine if Kylie said something about puberty blockers… even the most fervent TRA knows there’s no way in hell that Kylie is transphobic, so they couldn’t cancel her! Plus she’s too big now. Maybe her Neighbours character Charlene was ripe for transing, seeing as she was a tomboy mechanic in dungarees.

If a massive LGBT-friendly star like Kylie, Beyoncé or Harry Styles could deviate from the ‘100% capitulation at all costs’ on trans issues, then this awful Orwellian cancel culture would come to an end. People would understand these are not black and white issues and you can’t pile on others for holding views that don’t match the script. When it comes to children’s health and well-being, we should all be concerned and looking for the best way forward.

When thalidomide was exposed as a devastatingly dangerous drug for pregnant women’s unborn children, those women didn’t shout “silence you bigot! My morning sickness is out of control, how dare you try to take my medicine off me!” They accepted that a better way forward had to be found.

RealityFan · 01/09/2023 11:17

And of course, we have the results in real time of taking a stand... JKR and Glinner. Linehan's career obliterated despite being a legend for his work on multiple much loved sit comes, and JKR battered by multiple stormfronts.

Who is ever gonna take this risk seeing the effects on these two?

PaperWalkAndTalk · 01/09/2023 11:24

It's the same old story of cancellation (and we don't know the full story yet, like how much abuse everyone who works at the record company is likely to have gotten from the activists), where we again have to question what was the actual transphobic thing that was said? Trans rights succeeds with giving as little detail as possible.

The reporting is the same "she is against healthcare for trans children", "she said anti LGBT+ comments" etc. The reporting refuses to detail the actual comments (or at the most a few excerpts to make it look worse). Nowhere do they detail the fact that many medical institutions are rolling back on the use of puberty blockers due to health concerns.

You could phrase it two ways "Murphy does not support healthcare for trans children" or "Murphy does not support chemical castration for confused children".

In 10 years I want all these journalist to be shown what they wrote and told that they supported castrating (both chemically and physically) children because they didn't fit into gender stereotypes.

I suspect they will blame Big Pharma first and then say that no-one spoke up, and go 'la la la I'm not listening ' when shown the evidence

RealityFan · 01/09/2023 11:43

Those doing the gaslighting will be like them getting high on their own supply.

Worst case scenario in a decade as women's spaces cease to exist for women, and two generations of teens lost to medicalisation...

..."leave it to the kids, they know themselves, stop victimising individuals who only want kindness and understanding"

Best case scenario in a decade as Generation Alpha en masse turn back on trans as uncool, finding new fads, and women doggedly claw back their rights and spaces...

..."oh, the kids kinda seemed to know what they wanted, the doctors said it was ok, and I don't really remember people objecting because there was so little open discussion. In fact, I don't remember much at all, if I was wrong it was only because experts didn't say it was wrong".

OvaHere · 01/09/2023 12:03

Only just caught up on this story. Disgusting she's been treated this way for what are reasonable and medically sound opinions in most of Europe.

North America is so out of sync and myopic about 'trans healthcare' for children compared to here, where a degree of common sense has prevailed. Unfortunately the US still has a monopoly on social media platforms.

I despair that so many people are unable to apply critical thought about experimental, dangerous and un-evidenced treatments for children.

RealityFan · 01/09/2023 12:24

Her gig has been "quietly" cancelled. She still remains on the publicity websites like Rough Trade.

What's that lyric? "Killing me softly"?

I hope the anger that she displayed in that original private FB post is still with her.

Because if she's not to roll over and be part of TRA roadkill, she might want to refocus on it.

Your private message expressing exasperation at the inequities of teen medicalisation, a mainstream and considered opinion, is outed, and your whole organisation seeks to crush you.

How are you to feel? To react?
