No, let's say she's had plenty of experience with record labels. To my knowledge, we have Moloko and Roisin's first solo disc, Ruby Blue, on The Echo Label (who I think handed their back catalogue to Sony BMG ?) . Next up was 2008's Overpowered album, an interesting journey if ever there was one, with EMI. 2015 sees Hairless Toys and Take Her Up To Monto, on PIAS (which stands for Play It Again Sam) . Roisin Machine and remix album Crooked Machine were released by Skint Records.

Yep. As a geriatric millennial, I find it hilarious to be simultaneously irrelevant and also for my 90s/00s youth to be the apparent blueprint for current fashion.

Personally I'm in awe of generation X. I feel as if they created the culture and movements that I wandered into and benefitted from. And they're doing it again now by standing up for women's rights and openly discussing the menopause.

The opening track of Roisin Murphy's Hairless Toys album, "Gone Fishing" was inspired by the 1990 documentary about New York 1980s drag culture, Paris Is Burning. She explained: "This song was written after I watched the documentary film Paris Is Burning, having read an article which referenced it in a discussion about house music's origins in black, gay culture. I was deeply moved by this film.

Had a look at the cringily named record label. Seems to be owned by two Oxford guys with a combined age of 250. Nearly as decrepit as me.

She wasn't cancelled...she was free to say whatever she liked.
Just as people are free to share their disdain for her.
She can say whatever she likes.
Just as her label and fans are free to absolutely not support her.
She said what she said, and was perfectly free to do so.
Cancel culture doesn't exist.

I hasten to add that the screen-shots will be of people posting things in an actual public part of the internet..? So nobody can complain, when they deny the existence of cancel culture but can clearly be seen saying 'Cancelled !'

I had been looking forward to interviewing Murphy about this record, but all press engagements were immediately cancelled. So, I can’t ask her about the identity of the “Crazy Ants” that she sampled, or which JG Ballard story inspired “The House”, or the murky exploration of illness that bubbles up through the grimy synths and tense cymbals of “Eureka”. It’s a huge shame because I bet she’s got fascinating tales to tell. Still, the mysteries exude a powerful magnetism.

The album ends with the strange shimmer “Eureka”. It runs: “The doctor said he took one look at me/ Told me he could see there was something there/ And I can’t even say what the surgeon’s gonna take away/ And I don’t really care anyway…” The dark, direct narrative – along with the slimy, rubber band bass – recalls Kate Bush. I love the way Murphy leaves all the messiness swilling around, enigmas unanswered and questions shifting along with their sonic textures. It would be a shame if such a questing artist is cancelled. Murphy’s is a unique, brave voice in music.
