BookThatMatter exclude "terfs"

BooksThatMatter are a book subscription service that focus on books by female writers. They went on dragons den and ended up refusing funding as they didn't want to compromise this. All good.

They've always been lib fem but you could choose to ignore that if you still wanted to support a female-focused business.

However they've just rebranded as AphraBookClub and in the introductory Instagram post they've clearly stated "no terfs". When some women pointed out that this is offensive, they've stated that "terfs are swiftly being blocked".

How very disappointing.

The spiel sounds incredibly juvenile.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 17/08/2023 13:03

Book babes?
Cute packaging?

OK, I can understand why they’re blocking us. The whole thing seems to scream ‘girly’ gender stereotype.

WickedSerious · 17/08/2023 13:03

'A safe space' 🙄

It's always important for dirty great hairy men in pleated micro skirts to feel safe.

RoseslnTheHospital · 17/08/2023 13:04

They come across like young students. It's juvenile and unthinking, which is a shame given the apparent focus on women writers.

EdgeOfACoin · 17/08/2023 13:05

They run a book subscription service but cannot spell "existence" properly.

Hmm.

lechiffre55 · 17/08/2023 13:07

Do they have girly sleepovers and pillowfights?
The whole thing sounds like it was written by a bloke trying to be girly.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 17/08/2023 13:09

I loathe the word ‘cute’ unless it’s being used for small children or baby animals. It should have bugger all to do with products for adults.

LonelyFlans · 17/08/2023 13:11

They are relatively young (under 30yo I believe).

Interesting their space is for women (they include transwomen under this umbrella) and non-binary people and they promote books by these categories of writers, but they're also going to include Elliott Page's book. I wonder if they actually see EP as a woman?

TheGreatATuin · 17/08/2023 13:13

Terribly amused at the complete lack of self reflection that can produce a line claiming that they are 'inclusive' but also excluding women. For book people, they don't seem to know how words work.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 17/08/2023 13:14

Is this the output of one of those youth enterprise projects that encourages schoolchildren to set up businesses? (Do those still exist, or did they end with Thatcher?) Because they sound about 12.

IcakethereforeIam · 17/08/2023 13:23

Never heard of them. They consider Elliot Page a woman? That's kinda transphobic.

Rainbowshit · 17/08/2023 13:24

Pathetic children.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 17/08/2023 13:32

Awful reviews on Trustpilot and their Instagram is filled with customers asking when they'll receive their June/July/August subscriptions! Maybe they should focus more on providing a good service istead of just banning Terfs and deleting their comments.

Quite

they sound pathetic and not very bright. Like a book club version of the Popsy Facebook group. I’d leave them to it

My impression, likewise.

I'd assumed this would be something to do with Aphra Behn. Should I start the clock as her being retroconned as non-binary, Q or transmasc?

I thought this too! The spelling and grammar are awful...back to uni you go, young pink haired male intern..

YetAnotherSpartacus · 17/08/2023 13:38

How do so-called terfs deny the existence of women? I’m confused.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 17/08/2023 13:41

Aphra Books? as in, Aphra Behn? they've probably transed her, haven't they?

We deny the existence women with penises, no worse crime apparently

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 17/08/2023 13:44

The irony of 'our's is a safe space' while excluding women fighting to keep those spaces appears to have whooshed right over their heads.

it doesn’t say that but then I am old and just can’t keep up with it all these days.

JellySaurus · 17/08/2023 14:10

Inclusive as fuck indeed.

PublishingPerson · 17/08/2023 14:20

I wonder why the are rebranding? Something to do with their reluctance to pay their bills I'd hazard.

Saltysamphire · 17/08/2023 14:24

What a great business strategy, alienating a significant proportion of your target market from the offset. Their investors, if they have any, must be thrilled!

ArabeIIaKarenScott · 17/08/2023 14:29

idiots.
