BookThatMatter exclude "terfs"

BooksThatMatter are a book subscription service that focus on books by female writers. They went on dragons den and ended up refusing funding as they didn't want to compromise this. All good.

They've always been lib fem but you could choose to ignore that if you still wanted to support a female-focused business.

However they've just rebranded as AphraBookClub and in the introductory Instagram post they've clearly stated "no terfs". When some women pointed out that this is offensive, they've stated that "terfs are swiftly being blocked".

How very disappointing.

How strange to have a 'female focus' and to talk about the "pale and stale book industry". Isn't the expression "pale, male and stale"? Someone obvs has a residual reluctance when it comes to positioning males as the fundamental problem.

I thought the same.

Pale, male and stale - used to highlight industries dominated by white men of a certain age. By missing out the 'male' bit they seem to have revealed that their 'feminist' book club is fully inclusive of men but has a problem with disgusting geriatrics of maybe 30+

I don't get book subscriptions - I'm not really sure why you'd want to outsource your reading selection once you get past toddlerhood or the national curriculum. It seems quite passive when most book readers I know (I am in a couple of book clubs) have very clear ideas about what stories they like to read or who they trust to recommend them.

I read about 20 - 30 books a month. Sometimes it's nice to have the decision outsourced for awhile to change up your reading a bit. Having 1 book a month chosen by someone else when you are choosing the other 19-29 isn't really that passive.

It's more like being in a book club where one of the other members has chosen 1 of the books you read that month.

Well I do like to add slacking to my passive toddler like behaviour

I belonged to a horse book club for several years. I did read them all, but only once. Mainly hardbacks with beautiful photographs, I still have them all, neglected and unlooked at for decades. I kept meaning to unsubscribe but in those days it meant writing a LETTER and all sorts of other old-fangled nonsense.

Terf issues aside, they sound tedious af, babes.

GC beliefs are legally protected so I expect that a court case against this awful company might have a reasonable chance of success. Can any legal experts tell us if that might be possible? I do think this kind of bigotry needs calling out in the courts.

Mingomang · 18/08/2023 00:04

From reading the comments on their Insta page, this company is broke af (slay!) and no doubt could not fund any costs/damages they may be ordered to pay.

This is one time I’m fine with being excluded, they sound like juvenile illiterate over-privileged teenagers
