BookThatMatter exclude "terfs"

BooksThatMatter are a book subscription service that focus on books by female writers. They went on dragons den and ended up refusing funding as they didn't want to compromise this. All good.

They've always been lib fem but you could choose to ignore that if you still wanted to support a female-focused business.

However they've just rebranded as AphraBookClub and in the introductory Instagram post they've clearly stated "no terfs". When some women pointed out that this is offensive, they've stated that "terfs are swiftly being blocked".

How very disappointing.

Well fuck me, I didn’t realise feminism was supposed to have cute packaging.

What a great business strategy, alienating a significant proportion of your target market from the offset. Their investors, if they have any, must be thrilled!

It's known as the Wickes strategy.

Companies House filing history here

Don't have time to go through their docs now but in case anyone does...

Compulsory strike off action. I wonder if that's why the name changed?

Will they've definitely painted themselves into a corner.

They managed to get the compulsory strike off discontinued, but I'm assuming all was not well at that point.

I only know one person personally who has had compulsory strike offs and these days he's currently playing hide and seek with the official receivers and seems destined to be a bankrupt for ever.

Looks like (and I am not an accountant so may be wrong) they are not submitting end of financial year accounts on time. Hence the strike-off.

Boiledbeetle · 17/08/2023 18:20

Yeah date wise it seems the gazette notice gave them a kick up the arse to submit whatever they hadn't, but I'm presuming they were already in a severe financial mess by that point.

spannasaurus · 17/08/2023 18:27

The compulsory strike off would have been due to the confirmation statement ( not the annual accounts)not being filed. Its quite common and you shouldn't read too much into it (I am an accountant)

Random789 · 17/08/2023 18:28

How strange to have a 'female focus' and to talk about the "pale and stale book industry". Isn't the expression "pale, male and stale"? Someone obvs has a residual reluctance when it comes to positioning males as the fundamental problem.

Random789 · 17/08/2023 18:32

But also, why are we even talking about this? The posts make this 'business' look as if it is in a death spiral.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 17/08/2023 18:33

How old is their target market? They sound so bloody childish.

Let's see, we will exclude all the women who know men can't be women, call them names and depend on a tiny % of the population of genderists as our customer base.

Funny that they know Page is a female author though eh.

You may find the VIDA count interesting.

Yes, women are well represented in publishing, but in certain areas. Some fields are less open to them, and they tend to get fewer reviews. Some of the most prestigious journals don't reflect the numbers of women in publishing. NYRB and the LRB, for example.

https://www.vidaweb.org/the-count/

This is indeed interesting, thanks for sharing. I didn’t know this existed. Their latest data is from 2019; I believe the shift to “more women published” has only been the case since 2020 so it’ll be interesting to see what their latest data shows. (Something tells me it won’t necessary be reflected, maybe one day!)

Soubriquet · 17/08/2023 18:43

We should all ban together and create books exclusively for terfs. Except we would probably have the police at the door.

So why are they allowed to do this

Whattheactualwhatnow · 17/08/2023 19:06

What a shame. Just seen their post. They sound ridiculous. Crossed off the list.

Ifeelsuchflutterings · 17/08/2023 19:18

I was a customer of theirs before they didn't send my order 3 months in a row and continued to take payments after I asked to cancel

That was before their terf comment which I did see on Instagram. I'm glad I'm not a customer now

aweegc · 17/08/2023 19:21

I take offence on the service's behalf.

"She"? Did they just assume the service's pronouns?

Wow. They'd better put on the terf hat and banish themselves.

DuesToTheDirt · 17/08/2023 19:27

Well they're too right on for me... "cute af packaging"? Hmm. And I had to look up "stan", I thought at first it was a misspelling like "existance" (which is not a great look for a book service).

"terfs...deny the existance of women", what does that even mean?

”Stan” comes from the Eminem song (of the same name) whereby the character of Stan obsesses over Eminem and gets so distraught that he doesn’t get the returned attention that he feels he deserves, that he kills himself and his pregnant girlfriend.

The thought of TRA “stanning” women is a bit iffy when you break it down to that level. (Although, I’m not entirely sure if gen z - or whoever adopted the word - have actually listened to the lyrics of that song.)

I THINK they mean we deny the existence/ance of TW as women. But when you fuck around so much with language you’re going to be misunderstood.

2Rebecca · 17/08/2023 19:55

Do many women really just want "women" authors especially when being a woman is just about how you think not being female? I'm currently reading a book on Mao's cultural revolution ( very pertinent to the cancelling nonsense of today) and really don't care someone with a penis wrote it. It's a good but depressing book. Mao was an awful narc

DuesToTheDirt · 17/08/2023 19:57

I do gravitate to women authors, actually, I'm not sure why.

2Rebecca · 17/08/2023 20:00

I read a lot of women authors but would feel restricted if I signed up to an only women package especially one excluding proper feminists

MavisMcMinty · 17/08/2023 20:05

I probably read men and women authors equally, but I can tell you that I RARELY see my male partner picking up one of my books by a woman. In fact the only one I can think of is Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel, and that’s probably because his sister had recommended it to me.
