Comedy event cancelled at the Fringe because of Glinner?

I hadn't seen anything about this on X/Twitter previously, but apparently some activists have been putting pressure on the venue and they've cancelled an upcoming event called Comedy Unleashed because one of the comedians is Graham Linehan. How utterly pathetic. https://twitter.com/UnleashedComedy/status/1691476377793409024?s=20 Seems to be organised by/associated with Andrew Doyle, aka Titania McGrath.

Good grief, I think that the Linehan thing has finally held a magnifying glass up to Peter Tatchell, now that the X platform is open and the Linehan story is huge across media. Well, well, well.

So all the venue have to do to defend against a legal case is provide evidence that the ‘information’ provided by complainers (ie the information that sparked the cancellation of the contract) had nothing to do with GL’s GC views…

Well, that’s Leith Arches shit out of luck then!

Maybe we can find that Glinner hates Scots. Oh, that would still be a reason not to cancel him.

From what I can glean, the club/owner is not flush with cash, and he was badly ill disciplined in publishing such a crass, provocative statement slating Glinner.

I expect a full-throated apology will do, I can't see it being in anyone's interest to put a venue out of business.

IwantToRetire · 16/08/2023 23:59

I just have this idea that the venue staff are all sitting in a ring glowering at each other muttering under their breath, who was it who said it was okay to leave the intern in charge of our social media while we went out for a business (ie liquid) lunch?

They’ll have had to unhire the extra staff they thought they’d need. Can’t pay people just to sit around glowering at each other while the alternative venue rakes in all those bar profits.

IwantToRetire · 17/08/2023 00:11

Yes of course, in the real world. But instead what they are getting really anxious about, is how to tell the intern that social media for a business isn't the same as social media for an individual rainbow unicorn, who can stamp their little hooves to show what a mighty trans warrior they are.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/08/2023 00:24

I'm really fucking tired of ubiquitous Tatchell on all these discussions, just because the TRAs aren't adult enough to discuss anything.

SequentialAnalyst · 17/08/2023 01:18

What happened in the ambush? The clip has gone.

AutumnCrow · 17/08/2023 01:35

Apparently Talk TV took it down. I suspect they know it looks appalling for them.

You can find it via X and You Tube, I believe.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/08/2023 01:37

The clip that's gone is the State Media's version, ie not the original. Because Talk TV have made a copyright claim.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/08/2023 01:38

People linked to that one because Talk TV had already taken it down.

AutumnCrow · 17/08/2023 01:47

So it has gone, gone?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/08/2023 01:54

It's showing unavailable because TalkTV have made a copyright claim. There may well be other versions.

Plenty of evidence available- screenshots/archvies/witnesses, that he has harassed and issued threats on social media towards LGBT people, spread hatred and posted questionable images of underage children unclothed.

Those are bold and confident claims, also supported by PlanetJ.

I'm assuming that you are willing and able to post some evidence to support your bold claims?

PlanetJanette · 17/08/2023 06:11

NicCageisnotNickCave · 16/08/2023 20:03

That, my friend, is entirely subjective.

OK - let’s be more objective.

The things GL has done and said that might lead many to consider him odious and vile are relatively well known, and it is especially likely that anyone complaining about him to the arches will have both known of these things and included them in their complaints.

No. That’s a misreading of what you’re quoting.

They wouldn’t have to prove that it was nothing to do with his ‘GC views’.

They would have to show the comms, if it’s all nonsense about transphobia Leith Arches are fucked.

Looking at the owners financials, he’d be best off apologising.

Abhannmor · 17/08/2023 07:33

This is going terribly for Roseanna Lockwood as far as I can see on Twitter. Sarah Smith did a similar hit job on Glinner a few years ago and the reaction was very different.

Its still on YouTube afaik and I wonder if Smith now regrets it? Things have changed massively since 2014 - 2017. Tatchell is like a recruiting sergeant for the GC side.

Yes, they would have to show the comms.

As I said it is hugely unlikely the complaints were just that GL believes trans women are men and trans men are women.

I would be fairly sure the complaints will also have referenced GL’s conduct. And much of that conduct is simply not protected by the Equality Act.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/08/2023 07:53

Pure speculation. And it's not about whether he ever said something offensive.

Yeah, some of it is protected by defamation (ie it’s not libel if it’s true).

NicCageisnotNickCave · 17/08/2023 07:58

Funny thing is, so much of GL’s supposed quotes are faked screenshots, that bringing it to court will do GL a favour.

I really, really hope it gets to court.

And that the Good Law Project get involved 😂😂😂😂

Just saw part of it here. This presenter has shown again that she is really poor at the job. She certainly got the ‘controversy’ she wanted but it was manufactured. Graham was answering and answering matter of factly in this clip. I feel I need to see more because her reaction seems wrong.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/08/2023 08:02

If I was to discriminate against Jolyon Maugham on the grounds of his protected belief in genderism could I do it because I really disapproved of animal cruelty?

NecessaryScene · 17/08/2023 08:04

I would be fairly sure the complaints will also have referenced GL’s conduct. And much of that conduct is simply not protected by the Equality Act.

It is if they only care about the conduct because of his belief.

It would be VERY easy to demonstrate that similar conduct from people not sharing his belief has been tolerated by the venue.

Discrimination cases are all about balance of probability, not "beyond reasonable doubt". To be able to defend by claiming you were actually acting on some other factor than the protected characteristic, it you have to be able to show some consistent principles for the factor you're claiming. Otherwise that ends up less plausible than you having done it because of the protected characteristic.
