This shows the arrest of a teenage autistic girl by about 5 police officers. From what I can make out it is for a 'hate' crime. She apparently said a police officer was a Lesbian. Her Nan is a lesbian - that police officer is like my Nan.

I cannot comprehend the mindset of these officers.

The Equity Diversity and Inclusion edition of Rock Paper Scissors?

I couldn’t watch all that, I scrubbed through it and got the jist.

Reminds me of that poor autistic lad that got a criminal record for asking a transman PCSO about their biological sex. That story haunts me because we didn’t know anything about it until the conviction was reported in the press and if Team Terf had heard earlier we maybe could’ve crowdfunded him a specialist legal team/rustled him up some support via Free Speech Union.

Fingers crossed the incident in the video plays out differently and this time the police are punished for their outrageous overreaction instead of the autistic teenager - but if the girl in the video needs crowdfunding for either a criminal or civil case, I’m in.

Me too. Hope Harry the Owl notices this one

Ugh. She could not look more smug in that picture.

She’s going to be vilified on SM and she deserves every comment

She is a dreadful representation of the police.

But let's not forget there were a number of other officers going along with this bullshit and joining in rather than de-escalating.

I agree the family should take this further because I don't trust the police not to sweep this under the carpet.

happydappy2 · 10/08/2023 08:52

What crime was committed? These hate speech laws have to go. Poor kid could have been charged with resisting arrest, or assaulting a police officer…they had no right to enter the house or arrest her. I hope she gets compensation & the officers involved are re trained.

RocketPanda · 10/08/2023 09:11

The whole video is very distressing to watch, I can't imagine how distressing it was to be there. Awful just absolutely awful.
Those officers are a disgrace and deserve to be fired, especially the woman who was smirking as a child with both physical and learning disabilities could have ended up with severe life changing injuries.
The man who got into the cupboard space has zero self awareness. He was twice her size and far stronger and male blocking her, a girl in the middle of an asd meltdown.

OrangeFlorange · 10/08/2023 09:15

I saw the video last night and I found it really distressing. The blonde officer was standing clenching her fists and then stood looking smug as the girl was being pulled by the arm and crying in pain. Absolutely disgusting!

OvaHere · 10/08/2023 09:21

It's really awful. I can't imagine any scenario that warrants this.

Released without charge last night. Officer being investigated. She was held for at least 19 hours.

How can you tell from this tiktok. All i see is the child piercing herself.

Tiktok is very hard to link to! I linked to the girl's mother's account, where she explained what had been happening.

Gobbolinothekitchencat · 10/08/2023 09:32

What lead up to this event? Why were there so many officers 👮‍♂️ involved with the arrest of one teenager who didn’t appear to be armed, violent or threatening while wailing in a cupboard under the stairs? Was back-up called because there were at least two adults there shouting? The officer in the cupboard was at least attempting to talk to the girl although his presence and uniform probably heightened her emotions.

Zero awareness of autism, she made an observation and connection, blonde haired woman reminded her of her grandmother. Grandmother is a lesbian therefore someone similar must be as well, logical conclusion. How is that an insult? I would be more upset at being seen as older, but that’s my insecurity. Nothing negative was said, as far as video shows, about being a lesbian or even a grandmother.

Absolutely disgusting behaviour towards a young person who appears not to be a threat, has been described as having autism plus a medical condition by a mob of professionals who should know better.

Many people with autism do make statements that can be seen as offensive as they are factual observations. I was made aware of a school suspension when a child with autism said a trans student was a boy not a girl.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 10/08/2023 09:37

That was exceptionally distressing to watch. The police were barbaric.

I don't see why 'lesbian' is an insult. Treating it as such is more homophobic.

OvaHere · 10/08/2023 09:47

It's difficult to parse with so much going on in the video but I think the mother at one point made reference to her being brought home earlier.

Perhaps this young girl had needed assistance earlier in the day - an autistic meltdown whilst out somewhere? Maybe the police visit started as a follow up check?

I think only two officers were present originally before back up was called and the back up was requested because they wanted to arrest her for the lesbian Nan comment.

If this is all as bad as it looks it should be a teaching moment for police forces. Mandatory training (Oliver McGowan) is being implanted for the entirety of health and social care. I think the police should be next.

OvaHere · 10/08/2023 09:47

*implemented not implanted!

GoatsareGOAT · 10/08/2023 09:47

Another who thinks being offended by being told you look like a known lesbian is the homophobic part.

That was so upsetting to watch & I really admire her mum & brother/dad/? for being able to stay relatively calm.

Felix125 · 10/08/2023 09:51

I agree - the comment should have been ignored by the officer from the teenage girl. It would have prevented any further escalation and the arrest was arguably not necessary in any case.

This could have been dealt with by a vol interview if it was going to pursued at all. OR look at other RJ disposals for such an incident.

Iranoutofmonikers · 10/08/2023 09:54

The way they were dragging and pulling on her arm was dreadful to watch. A friend's daughter has scoliosis and being pulled around like that would cause severe pain. I would consider that to be assault of a vulnerable/disabled person.
I hope the child's mother brings charges.
I was brought up to respect the police, but honestly, after decades of worsening behaviour witnessed and experienced by friends and family, I wouldn't trust any of them. Not just WY police, but every single force. They are all as bad as each other.
Thank God they are not routinely armed in this country.

Felix125 · 10/08/2023 09:59

Why was she suddenly on the floor outside? Was she forced to the ground by officers, or did she go to the floor for other reasons (trip, fall, stumble)

What should the police do though if a person with disabilities refuses to move when they are under arrest?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/08/2023 09:59

Also on AIBU. Lots of "I don't believe there isn't more to it, it was posted by the wrong sort".

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/08/2023 10:00

To think an autistic child should not be treated like this by the police? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/4868642-to-think-an-autistic-child-should-not-be-treated-like-this-by-the-police

AlisonDonut · 10/08/2023 10:02

If someone calls you, a woman, a lesbian, and you have them arrested, then YOU are the homophobic one. Not them.

She's not refusing to move, she's unable to move because of the extreme distress she is in. So the police need to wait and involve someone trained to deal with disabled children. They don't get to say 'I don't care' and then ride roughshod over her human rights.

Clearly the word bastard is meant to be an insult so yes.

I don't see where you're going with this because an autistic teen saying 'you look like a lesbian like my Nan' is nothing like that.

That is in no way comparable and the fact that you seem to think it is makes your judgement look very questionable.
