Transgender patient loses unborn baby while undergoing hysterectomy while four months pregnant https://mol.im/a/12387829

This article is horrifying.
In my experience women are always given pregnancy tests before surgery, what the hell happened here?

Female-to-male patient loses unborn baby while undergoing hysterectomy

Jesse Pohlner, 38, was four months pregnant when he underwent a full hysterectomy at Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne during lockdown in 2021.

"he" was obviously "she" in bed then, wasn't she? And how would she NOT KNOW pregnancy was a possibility after sex?

It's seems as soon as you mention anything trans, all common sense goes out of the window

😮😮😮

BrunchBunch · 09/08/2023 09:52

And "female to male"? It would be bad enough saying "woman to man", given that's how they seem to want to define things these days, but surely they can't actually believe female to male. Or are those words gone now too.

SaleOfTwoTitties · 09/08/2023 09:53

My brain just can't take any more of this madness.

RoseslnTheHospital · 09/08/2023 09:53

If you are female and having sex with a male person without using any form of contraception, then pregnancy is always possible. For a surgery such as hysterectomy, pregnancy should always be definitively ruled out. I sincerely hope that the fact that this person had a trans gender identity did not affect the decision making process, but perhaps it did. Or perhaps the hospital are not operating properly in general.

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 09/08/2023 09:54

He should have taken responsibility and done a pregnancy test himself. The mind boggles, quite honestly.

FrancescaContini · 09/08/2023 09:54

This is grotesque for so many reasons. Why wasn’t a pregnancy test taken as a matter of course?

StephanieSuperpowers · 09/08/2023 09:55

That's just horrific. The medical community should stop pretending that any kind of transition results in changing sex. It just doesn't and I really do hope people learn from this awful tragedy and grow up a bit.

Probably because of fear of causing offense.

This madness really has to stop now. Other people have rights too.

thatsn0tmyname · 09/08/2023 09:57

This is why we must, must, must be honest on documents and medical records. Accurately recording sex and gender ensures that we all get the correct treatment for our biological sex.

OhComeOnFFS · 09/08/2023 09:57

WTF? We are told so much about the way a trans person feels they are the other sex, but surely the act of intercourse would be too horrible a reminder of your femininity if you were a TM?

Beowulfa · 09/08/2023 09:57

38 and already has children? Are they still allowed to call her mum?

Flickersy · 09/08/2023 09:58

So it happened in lockdown, when consultations etc were done remotely and healthcare services were generally under pressure.

The surgery was rushed and booked in for only 10 days after the consultation.

The patient was assured a pregnancy test would be done but this didn't happen.

They were asked a series of questions to determine if pregnancy was a possibility, but still no test was done.

I don't think this has anything to do with the patients trans status, I think this is a hospital cock-up.

Only one sex has hysterectomies. This is insane.

Froodwithatowel · 09/08/2023 09:58

Sorry, I take that back: I see the patient was supposed to have had pregnancy testing and was fully aware and willing for that. So it appears a massive hospital failure rather than anything to do with the pregnant mother being trans. Horrific for everyone involved, I feel very sorry for the staff in the operating theatre as much as the patient.

FrancescaContini · 09/08/2023 09:59

Agree, @StephanieSuperpowers Out of all the people in the world, the one group of people who DO know that you can’t change sex are MEDICS. It’s disgraceful that anybody with medical training plays along with this horrific game. Where is their integrity?

RoyalCorgi · 09/08/2023 09:59

Yes, it does seem as if this was nothing to do with the patient being trans and was simply a cock-up on the part of the hospital. They should have done a pregnancy test, and didn't.

Having said that, it seems incredible that this person didn't conduct their own pregnancy test. Why wouldn't you?

given that this person was going for a hysterectomy, no one would have been in any doubt about their biological sex

Have you actually read the article?

They knew the patient was female. A pregnancy test was assured. A checklist of questions was asked. The hospital messed up by or actually doing the pregnancy test.

Flickersy · 09/08/2023 10:01

Or? *Not even

Motnight · 09/08/2023 10:01

I can't believe that this actually happened.

Words fail me.

Elepunt · 09/08/2023 10:01

When they were told by the nurse a pregnancy test wouldn't be necessary, any reason they couldn't have taken some self responsibility? If they were having unprotected sex with a man and presumably not using any contraception then why didn't they say yes there is a chance? This is the issue with this gender bullshit, when it comes to medical treatment sex is important. I wonder if having to probably refer to this woman as a man made the nurse unsure about whether they'd be cancelled or called transphobic for carrying out a rational pre op check.

Dinopawus · 09/08/2023 10:03

As someone with experience of dealing with healthcare complaints, I'm getting a sense of where there's blame there's a claim. Or in the case of the private sector, a refund.

This individual had had previous pregnancies.
They knew how to obtain a pregnancy test.
Despite this, they appear to have given ambiguous information (at best) to the nurse checking the likelihood of pregnancy.
They were electing to have surgery to change their gender appearance in order to live their interpretation of maleness. That doesn't sound to me like someone wishing to continue with a pregnancy.

The activist protests too much.

NutellaEllaElla · 09/08/2023 10:12

Gosh, the patient knew they were having PIV intercourse, knew the risk of pregnancy and didn't do a test? That's quite irresponsible. I feel sorry for the poor Dr who encountered this situation probably quite a disturbing event for them
