Transgender patient loses unborn baby while undergoing hysterectomy while four months pregnant https://mol.im/a/12387829

This article is horrifying.
In my experience women are always given pregnancy tests before surgery, what the hell happened here?

Female-to-male patient loses unborn baby while undergoing hysterectomy

Jesse Pohlner, 38, was four months pregnant when he underwent a full hysterectomy at Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne during lockdown in 2021.

Yes, it does seem as if this was nothing to do with the patient being trans and was simply a cock-up on the part of the hospital. They should have done a pregnancy test, and didn't.

Having said that, it seems incredible that this person didn't conduct their own pregnancy test. Why wouldn't you?

Because you are in total denial about it being a possibility?

I'm surprised the hospital didn't conduct the test. I've always been asked about being pregnant since I was about 14. Still being asked aged 55. It's routine.

Thatladdo · 09/08/2023 14:53

HE had a hysterectomy 😩

This needs to stop

Chersfrozenface · 09/08/2023 14:46

Surely a positive test would have triggered an ultrasound scan which would have detected the problem.

Would have triggered more than that …

They did ask. They asked a series of questions which led them to believe there was no possibility of the patient being pregnant. They were wrong.

Mousehoel · 09/08/2023 15:19

The hospital have cocked up. A pregnancy test should have been carried out.

However, looking at the bigger picture, isn’t this what TRAs are advocating for? Health care that doesn’t risk triggering dysphoria?

I don't want my post or the thread deleted which is why I'm being circumspect.

You dont have to be rude, or place the thread in danger, but you really shouldnt be coy either

I'm not being coy. All of us posters have to be very careful what we write, not least because it's not always clear what is and isn't permitted.

The thread below is still available on MN - look up the definition of the term under discussion on Wiktionary.

I wonder if....

She didn't say she'd had sex with a man a few months before. It is possible that when being questioned, she didn't want to admit to sex with a man because that may have invalidated the operation, as she clearly wasn't living as a man, sexually.

This was my first thought.

ItsFunToBeAVampire · 09/08/2023 16:51

borntobequiet · 09/08/2023 16:46

This was my first thought.

I wonder if her partner is a transwoman?

And when asked if she'd had sex with a man, the answer was no.

Pure conjecture I know, but when language is mangled to this extent it would be completely possible.

OP posts:
SouthernLassies · 09/08/2023 17:12

The woman is being disingenuous.

In the article (do read it) she said she expected a blood test to check for pregnancy, having had previous pregnancies.

So if she did, and wasn't offered one as a result of her answers to the questions, why did she not ask?

She can't have it both ways!

At some point, even though you could argue the hospital made a mistake, the woman answered the pre-op questions clearly intending to show she was living as a man (so not having PIV sex with another man).

BUT she also thought she should have been offered a blood test to show pregnancy. why would that thought even enter her head if she'd been living as a man for months? Men don't get pregnant.

SouthernLassies · 09/08/2023 17:13

@ItsFunToBeAVampire I think the question is 'do you think you could be pregnant'.

Not 'Have you had sex with a man'.

Viviennemary · 09/08/2023 17:15

The world has gone mad. Hope common sense takes over before too long.

Chersfrozenface · 09/08/2023 17:16

Ah, but men can get pregnant

According to the Guardian, quoting "Jerome':
""It’s 2022. Not only women can get pregnant, men can get pregnant, too,’ says Jerome."

Well how else were they supposed to have sex? They live as a man just that they still have they're lady part's not a penis.

So how do they live as a man? Genuine question, and I’m not trying to catch you out. I have always wondered what a transman has to do to ‘live as a man’, given that thousands of women routinely wear trousers and flat shoes, work in formerly male professions eg engineering, drink pints etc.

well, would you expect anything else from the Guardian?

Thankfully, 99.9% of people believe, quite rightly, this is nonsense and the sooner their voices are heard and this nonsense stopped, the better.

SouthernLassies · 09/08/2023 17:36

@Titfortat78 You do know how gay men have sex, don't you? They don't have a vagina.

Remembermynamealways · 09/08/2023 17:40

What the actual….
This whole debacle has just gone way too far, and now a baby is dead, mother traumatised not to mention the medics.

Holy god, the laws need to be tightened significantly to protect everyone, most of all a baby in the womb.

You can’t force a trans person to do anything, they will have you sued, shut down, protests stationed outside with men urinating everywhere. The whole point is that we have stripped back all common sense and now even the best interests of a patient are compromised and endangered.

They should have had a pregnancy test but no one felt they could ask a ‘man’.

Mythicalcreatures · 09/08/2023 18:15

They are taking no responsibility what so ever, yes the hospital should have done a test, but so could they and they knew that they had sex.

Remembermynamealways · 09/08/2023 18:21

It’s not the hospitals fault, they were just following protocol no doubt for ‘men’.

I was expecting it to be an American story in a Democrat controlled state. So it's Australia. It could also have been NZ. Enough of this biology denial already.

justrest · 09/08/2023 19:31

I recently had a hysterectomy. It took place at a small hospital, where all of my children were born, some of the same surgical staff were present at the c sections and then at the hysterectomy.

I had bloods taken a week before but at no point was I asked about the possibility of pregnancy. I am assuming that they checked for pregnancy as part of my blood work.

Surely that is the issue here, and the trans aspect is just a red herring? I genuinely don't understand why the reason for the procedure should affect any pre op checks.

This is a truly awful story, for everyone involved. I hope it never happens again.
