I’m so sick of having to say “no I’m not seeing it”, “but you’re a feminist, you know it’s a feminist movie!” “I’m not that kind of feminist.” I don’t care about barbie and I don’t think it’s an appropriate medium for a feminist message, even ironically. I’m sure it’s a good movie, I’m sure it’s very feminist FOR a barbie movie. I have no interest in it. I’ve been called a bad feminist for not seeing a movie about a symbol of female oppression and body dysmorphia. I don’t care if “barbie can do anything she wants”, I’m a real woman in the real world and I can barely walk down the street safely. I don’t care if they have a slightly overweight barbie, a disabled barbie, a doctor/lawyer/farmer barbie, it’s not good enough. I have no desire to hear a feminist message from barbie’s mouth, nor defend my feminism against it.
I get that for some people it’s just a movie about a doll and they don’t care, that’s fine. But it means something actively negative to me. Can anyone either commiserate or help me to come around to the idea?

Calling a trans women a man is transphobic. , @StrawberryWasp
If you would therefore call a trans man a woman, you are stripping a woman of her rights.
I appreciate not all will agree with me on the twaw but you absolutely cannot call them men.

Of?

your assertion that there are ‘thousands’ of trans suicides.

That’s an incredibly irresponsible claim to make.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I meant men.

You may believe that correctly recognising (and naming) a person’s sex is transphobia but UK equality law states otherwise.

The doctor barbie are you imply she was portrayed by a trans person. ? I didn't notice.

I’m a little surprised at that. The actor was jarringly obvious (and not a good actor either, tbh). Possibly the most risible bit was the implication that ‘she’ needed to be deprogrammed alongside the female barbies.

This. The male playing a Female was extremely obvious in every way.

It is possible to employ either a male or female, someone of a particular ethnic background or someone who does not have a specific disability for some jobs. For example there jobs where you need to be able to see - which automatically rules out those who are blind. There are acting roles where they require someone to be a particular race or sex, just as a school can in some cases advertise for a female or male PE teacher.
I think this role is case where they should have only cast females

Yes but in this case they didnt need to be a particular race. They're mythical dolls fs.

I can.
I do.
I will.
And I will continue to.

I reject your accusation if 'transphobia', I couldn't care less if you beleive it.

Because trans women are men.
And yes trans men are women.

WildUnchartedWaters · 02/08/2023 17:49

If you look for things to be offended by, yes.

I love the attempt to tell me what I can and cannot say.
That's a No.

That time has passed. You are 5 years too late.

I mean you can make transphobic statements then say you're not your choice.

So you support womens rights but only if they make choices you approve of. I see.

SomethingFun · 02/08/2023 17:51

I’ve seen it, it’s alright. The feminism is very confused and watered down, it definitely loses its way when they come back out of the real world. There’s something about how as a mother you stop your life to let your children go out into the future or somesuch which I disliked immensely.

it’s a hit movie with a female director and main role and it does pay lip service to feminism so I feel like I should support it. But I came away with the message that women are responsible for breaking the patriarchy by deprogramming themselves and men will go along with whatever they feel will make their lives easier, which doesn’t feel very feminist to me, but does feel very American 😁

You can say whatever you like, just as I can point its transphobic.

Stating that a man places one of the female Barbie dolls is a fact its not phobic

Everyone has the same rights.

Incorrect if theyve transitioned.

That said, current law is that racism and homophobia is so if the victim believes it to be. I hope I see a generation that applies to trans too in the case where people flatly use the wrong term.

I'm bowing out of this silly exchange now so those who want to talk Barbie can continue to if they'd like.

For me the fact that the film pushes the message that women can be anything they want to me, than have Doctor Barbie played by a male, tells me all I need to know.

Isn’t one of the jokes in the film that Ken can’t believe a woman in the real world could be a doctor? Then the film doubles down on his misogyny by... hiring a male to play Doctor Barbie!

What? I saw it this morning and there aren't any male Barbies.

sunshinesupermum · 02/08/2023 17:59

My feminist 38 yr old DD has seen it and recommended it to me, her feminist mother. Other DD reminds me I never bought them Barbie dolls when they were kids! I'm seeing the film tomorrow. OP no one is making you see the film so you do you.

No it isn't

That was one of my fav bits the doctor scene- v sharply well written and acted- and funny !!

Another great bit was elderly lady being told she was beautiful by Barbie and her reply was " I know it"
Lots and lots. Of absolutely cracking one liners and too many thought provoking for one viewing only
I cried at one point and laughed out loud twice which us something I never do to even the funniest films

I have heartily recommended it to everyone as freshest film for years

Bit daft to be sooooooo angry about something you haven't seen
Watch it on the black market iTunes if you don't want to pay to see it - but I think you have made your mind up

Maybe the men you know are being rude and should be told to stop
