Women's rights general conversations - Thread 6

Continuation of Thread 5.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

But it'd be handy in some countries, if you wanted to go to a football match, or drive a car...

MouseMinge · 19/09/2023 17:47

I wonder what would happen if there was a concerted campaign and up and down the land millions put the wrong sex on their passport application, with a copy of an accurate birth certificate, for shits and giggles, or, you know, to show how utterly farcical all of this is.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 19/09/2023 17:56

Yes it's been the case for quite a few years. Passports and driving licences.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 19/09/2023 15:08

Watching the ScotGov challenge to the GRR section 35. Lady Haldane (yes, that one) is the judge - and has just now, live on screen, discovered that passport sex markers can be changed without a GRC.

Edited

It was a bit WTF!!!

duc748 · 19/09/2023 18:04

The GRC: the document that no-one can ask if you have one, but never mind, you don't need one anyway.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 19/09/2023 18:06

At least for passports it is a bit more complicated than 'because I want to': https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/gender-recognition/gender-recognition-accessible#gender-change-evidence-needed

Not sure about driving licences. You can also change the gender in your medical records without having a GRC - although it's not a good idea, because a lot fail to fill in the 'sex' field so you're likely to get offered the wrong screenings etc.

Gender recognition (accessible)

My favourite comment on the (grim) RB situation is from someone on Twitter who said "I hope they throw the Booky Wook at him"

StephanieSuperpowers · 19/09/2023 18:21

I saw a tweet that he's fucky wucked.

Fingers crossed.

angelico53 · 19/09/2023 18:23

I've been pondering this for ages now. I reckon/hope that single sex space and sports battles will be won, in time. But not the prevalence of the ideology that sits beneath, which I understand as an unholy alliance of queer theory and (I guess) post-modernism and its offspring.

Too many organisations and strata in society have been captured and I can't see it just quietly slinking off to lick its wounds or whatever else seems appropriate, and hiding. I don't think that the various public bodies, charities, sports bodies, rape and crisis centres would have got so tangled up in blue and pink without the figleaf of academic credibility (which I believe was heavily funded and supported by wealthy trans people.

How can that be dealt with? It has distorted the mosts basic human behaviour, not to mention truth and reality in the eyes of so many. And the academics in power can't be trusted (or at least that's how it seems). Fucksticks.

JanesLittleGirl · 19/09/2023 18:23

Can anyone tell me where to find the sex marker on a driving license? I can't see anything obvious on mine.

It's OK, I've found it. It's the second digit in the birthdate section of the driver number. 0 or 1 is male. 5 or 6 is female. Not exactly obvious.

MavisMcMinty · 19/09/2023 18:58

Even if nothing happens legally after these allegations, I hope more young women (unrealistic to expect it of ALL young women, unfortunately) keep Brand at bargepole-length from now on. As he ages and his public platform crumbles, his opportunities will be greatly reduced. There will always be star-fuckers but at least they’ll go into it with their mascara-running eyes open.

duc748 · 19/09/2023 19:09

But there'll be another Pied Piper along shortly.

MouseMinge · 19/09/2023 20:41

As someone said in the Sunday Times piece. I could look at it (I buy it every week because I love their Culture magazine) but that would mean moving and I don't want to, in the aftermath of Jimmy Saville others were brought down including Rolf Harris. I think the same might be true of this. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a certain comedian who now co-hosts a primetime reality type competition that used to be on the BBC but moved to another channel. At the very least he was "dating" young girls who were just about 16 when he was well into his thirties. Brand is far from the only one who rode the late 90s onward "it's funny to be a bit edgy/actually a misogynist prick" bandwagon.

MouseMinge · 19/09/2023 20:45

I've just read the Cut link about surrogacy. It's shocking and I hope that they won't get away with it. All other things aside if the surrogate mother's eggs have been used it's really dangerous to remove her name from the birth certificate and, in fact, shouldn't even be allowed after the six-month period now. Not because of her rights as a mother but because of the child's right to be aware of any genetic issues that might come from that side of their family. We really are on the road to being utterly batshit when it comes to reality right now.

mach2 · 20/09/2023 05:37

I never liked Brand from the first time I laid eyes on him on the bits of Big Brother I watched, not because I had any special insight - It was more superficial. I did not like him, Sam-I-Am.

I was vaguely aware of his "shagger" reputation even though I did my best not to hear of him but the eye-opener for me was Sachsgate. I'm old-fashioned in that I think what goes between two people stays between them and he dragged Georgina Baillie's name out to where the usual trash papers could feast on her.

His account in his own book of throwing a prostitute's phone against the wall when he thought he wasn't getting his money's worth just deepens the disgust.

Back to the superficial, I realised what it was that really disturbs me about his appearance - his teeth. He reminds me of one of those sinister nutcracker dolls.

Now @mach2 what did you do? Have you been naughty? Grin

Had my entrance exam for WRN yesterday. Think my utter technical incompetence with the zoom setup proved I wasn't a cunning ringer.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 20/09/2023 09:27

How many were on the interview panel, @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 20/09/2023 09:29

Just the one. It was a friendly chat rather than a 'test' as such.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 20/09/2023 09:46

Good stuff. I had four of them asking me questions and it felt a bit weird.

Kucinghitam · 20/09/2023 09:51

A while ago, I had a look at joining WRN but didn't get round to it - I think I couldn't work out how to find my local group.

Dunno. It was an expression of my blistering dislike for Brand, based on superficial and more substantive things. I added a link to something but I can't remember what now. 😂

I emailed them via the contact address on the WRN site and someone got back to me. It isn't at all obvious how to find the local groups and the site could be made a lot clearer.

It'll probably be the link. MN auto-quarantines some archive links.
