Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Was I just scoped out to see if I'm GC?

I was just at a work event and a colleague just told me she needed a wee but couldn't go because the toilets were unisex and she didn't feel comfortable and looked at me quizzically. I replied by telling her I'd seen some ladies ones on the way in that were just around the corner and gave her directions. But I'm now wondering if this was some kind of hint I should have picked up on! 🤔

What is GC? I don't understand

nonman · 18/07/2023 17:53

It stands for Gender Critical. It means putting women’s rights to dignity, safety and single sex spaces in front of men’s needs for validation of their feelings.
it means wanting to keep rapists out of women’s prisons, and refuges.

there’s a lot more but thems the basics.

Aha! Thanks for this! Ps Am a fan of Jk and agree with her. Does that make me GC?

Igmum · 18/07/2023 17:58

It certainly does. Welcome to terfdom.

@Georgyporky I really hope you have cut and paste otherwise your fingers will ache from all that typing

If she was a wheelchair user she wouldn’t have had a choice. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a disabled toilet that wasn’t unisex.

But they are single occupant so this wouldn't be an issue.

The difference is that a disabled bathroom is one loo and one sink in one room. Male or female, you are the only person in that space at that time (unless you have a carer with you and presumably you've consented to that. If not, whole other discussion).

"Unisex toilets' often mean several toilet cubicles and shared sinks meaning you are NOT the only person in that space and could be the only female person in there with one (or more) male people. Toilets are places where you make yourself quite vulnerable. This is particularly true with cubicle doors which do not always cover you from floor to ceiling (or even left to right) and sometimes do not lock etc correctly.

nonman · 18/07/2023 18:17

As a person who often needs the disabled loo at short notice I actually object to them being repurposed as unisex (gender neutral). I have an invisible disability and need a clean easily accessible space, I do not need to form a queue behind various special categories and then find that the loo paper and soap has run out.

nonman · 18/07/2023 18:18

the men’s toilets should be uni sex

AncientBallerina · 18/07/2023 18:22

Bloody hate unisex toilets- and most men I know don’t like them either

lurchermummy · 18/07/2023 18:23

@BeBraveLittlePenguin so did I!!!

NotMyBagButCrackOn · 18/07/2023 17:44

Fair comment. A lot of feminists center the needs of white able bodied women yet believe they stand for women as a whole.

You’re really going to have to cite some evidence there for such a sweeping statement

Are they too big for going down rabbit holes, though?

A 90s singer who I positively adore made a hilarious but subtle dig at identity politics at a gig I was at a few weeks ago. God I was pleased that he had retained his sardonic scepticism.

Ooh give us a clue?

CorruptedCauldron · 18/07/2023 18:50

Reminds me of The Handmaid’s Tale, before Offred realises there’s an underground resistance. Failing to pick up on the cue, “what a beautiful May Day,” she simply replies: “Praise be!” Maybe you were being scoped out OP! I have no problem with single occupancy unisex loos (similar style to disabled loos, like a little private bathroom with its own sink etc) but can’t stand being in an open mixed-sex space with flimsy, gappy cubicles and shared sinks.

Are white able bodied women allowed to assert their needs over white able bodied men, just so I’m sure how this Top Trumps works..?

JKR is the signal. We spot them in films these days, too.

Which ones? Because sometimes I think people read into it. I know people who still like her work but are trans everything (not many though).

If ever I'm having a conversation with someone about crime fiction, I always make a point of saying that my favourite crime novels are the Cormoran Strike ones, written by JKR under the Robert Galbraith pseudonym. (Fortunately, this also happens to be true.)

MsRosley · 18/07/2023 19:03

My terfdar would be working overtime and I'd be delighted.

teawamutu · 18/07/2023 19:04

Likewise. Then I sometimes throw in 'of course, there's been all this fuss about what she said about women's rights <eyeroll>'

Response has been 100% positive so far.

Happy May Day 😁

SaleOfTwoTitties · 18/07/2023 19:16

Yes, op. Give her a try.
As an aside, I went into the men's loo by mistake in asda (combination of alcohol and stupid door signs) and the smell of urine made me realise way before I spotted the urinals.

MrsJamin · 18/07/2023 19:24

Ooh I drop similar things to people when I'm trying to scope them out! Have dissed unisex loos in the past and scoffed at unisex clothes!

GC Grand Chinchilla (rabbit breed)

Fabulous.

Whilst that maybe a Great Chinchilla, it isn't a Grand Chinchilla. And as I obviously reject appropriation, I can not accept a GC pretending to be a GC.
