Owen Jones guardian piece attacking Duffield

In case anyone is interested ...

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jun/30/lgbtq-labour-thatcher-section-28

It's basically some waffle around historic labour homophobia building up to the real point which is trying to get Rosie Duffield in trouble for saying men can't be mothers.

The LGBTQ+ community could once rely on Labour as a staunch ally. Not any more | Owen Jones

The party that abolished Thatcher’s hateful section 28 has been pulled into the mire of ‘social conservatism’, says Guardian columnist Owen Jones

He's missed off some inconvenient facts.

Would a "staunch ally" have brought in civil partnerships, or actual, equal rights for same-sex marriage?

Telling that he reaches for Tatchell as part of his "evidence", without including the furore about his letter to the Graun on sex with kids. Or the video. Or Tatchell's rant that self-ID is fine. Etc.

AndEverWhoKnew · 01/07/2023 10:55

I wouldn't give him the clicks.
It's The Guardian's equivalent of a 'shock jock' - guaranteed to be sexist, wrong-headed and blame a woman for everything. Not to mention the raging hypocrisy of pretending woman is a nebulous term ... except when it comes to sexual partners and surrogacy.

LarkLane · 01/07/2023 11:06

OJ having yet another woman hating emotionally charged blather? No surprise there then. What a mouthy little safe bubble he lives in.

Try talking that shit round Bootle, OJ. I'm sure that there are lots of women around here who will have a strong exchange of views with you re your gobshite faux intellectual drivel.

No chance of you ever being successfully elected to represent the people is there?

Whereas, Rosie Duffield is a hard working and gutsy MP who actually helps and represents her constituency, without fear or favour.

DrBlackbird · 01/07/2023 11:26

Looked up how it’s going in Norway and found these threads. Seems not going so well for women and girls. As usual, MN FWR already on it several years ago, but that bit of research conveniently omitted or deemed unnecessary by OJ. Never let the truth get in the way of inconvenient truths.

More broadly, it is so disheartening that seemingly no left / centre left oriented organisation (such as The Guardian or the Labour Party) is prepared to speak up for women’s safety and biological reality when it’s an issue that surpasses political orientation.

More sunlight. Thanks OJ I'm sure a man appropriating motherhood will be an eye opening moment for many.

MeowOnceForOffended · 01/07/2023 11:28

I'm not sure if it's the right place to do it, but I'm so grateful to Rosie for sticking up for women and so sorry about the hideous bullying she's received for it.

I wrote to her (I'm in her constituency) when she first stuck her head out. No idea if she got it as never received a reply. Either she was inundated with emails of support or her woke team hod such communications from her. Either way, I'm glad she's the voice of reason on her party.

I've no idea if I can vote for her. I was hoping she'd defect to conservative to be honest. She could do a lot of good in the party and I fear she's powerless in Labour. She's completely wedded to the working class roots of labour though so I doubt she would, but in my opinion that party no longer exists. Labour is very much the champagne socialist party now.

And yes, before someone comes on saying Tories aren't much better, I'm very aware of that. Doesn't excuse labour the appalling behaviour they seem to relish instead of proper opposition though.

Anyway, Rosie is awesome. Owen is a homophobic misogynistic twerp.

I’m in Norway. Self ID was snuck in under cover of darkness and MSM refuses to touch it with a barge pole. A man was sentenced to a £5k fine and jail time for getting into a spat with a tw and telling him “you’re delusional if you think anyone actually thinks you’re a little girl and not a larping bloke”. After that a feminist and a prominent lesbian made public “men cannot be lesbians/mothers” statements in order to goad these people into pressing charges against them too so more people could see what the hell was going on, and charges were pressed but the police, presumably smelling the oncoming shitshow, dropped them.

Our BBC, NRK, will run sob stories about TW doing sports with women (both immigrants, I’ve noticed - an American and a Thai) and how it’s soo important, with less emotionality afforded the opposing side. Anecdotally I know from parents of teens that trans “girls” change with female children. There was a kick off when one sissy porn trancel used female locker rooms and other women protested. Same massive pervert who made the shitty Terfenstein game where you can murder feminists. What a creep. Glad he’s nowhere near me!

We’re a small country with long traditions of leaving our neighbours the hell alone and respecting privacy, so it’s mostly politely not talked about. Feminists have tried finding out if men are housed in female jails and not been given proper replies. All in all we’re waiting for our Jessica Yaniv or Isla Bryson moment because most people have no idea. It sucks.

meowgender · 01/07/2023 11:46

@ArabeIIaScott that's a great point. By Owen's own reasoning, this should make him responsible for all the abuse Rosie Duffield receives whenever he writes something critical about her.

Except that, Rosie is an actual woman so Owen's misogynist logic puts all the blame on her in this situation too.

I used to contribute to the Guardian, but after insulting garbage like this and Zoe Williams’s recent nonsense about transgender women prisoners having a hard time, they won’t be getting another penny from me.
Jill Tweedie must be turning in her grave.

Same.

I have also stopped contributing to the letters page, to ‘Take Part’, to its photographic comps & pages, and other ‘reader initiatives’.

I’ve also had a couple of articles printed in it, but wouldn’t submit to them now. The Observer maybe; but not the shitrag Guardian.

'When Peter Tatchell stood as the party’s candidate in the 1983 Bermondsey byelection, he was subjected to a viciously homophobic campaign – the Liberal party described its candidate as the “straight choice” – and the Labour establishment did little to defend him'

Peter Tatchell who has written in defence of children having sex with adults? That Peter Tatchell?

Indeed! It's also worth remembering that the Liberal Party's "straight choice" was not-so-straight Simon Hughes.

Noorandapples · 01/07/2023 12:32

He needs a hobby. I've seen him in Jeremy vine and he loves nothing more than to be "outraged" about anything at all. Last time it was that a £10 toothpaste exists. He's on the lookout to be upset, I think it's an addiction of sorts.

Littlesprouts · 01/07/2023 12:35

I don't usually bother reading OJ. The most interesting thing in this piece is the confirmation Starmer's office won't be responding to complaints about RD's Tweet ("at this stage"). Gives some slight hope that the tail isn't wagging the dog this time. Which is probably really what OJ can't stand.

Whyjustwhy123 · 01/07/2023 12:37

I’ve said it before on FWR and think it’s appropriate to say again in response to this.

I always say to myself ‘nope fuck off’ every time I get that annoying message ‘you’ve read XXX number of articles on The Guardian website would you like to contribute’.

If anyone is reading from the Guardian. The day you begin to really support women and girls and women such as Rosie, Maya, etc I will click differently.

That’ll be his recently diagnosed ADHD

(Can’t screen shot I’m afraid, but I saw this the other day just before Twitter kicked off lurkers like me.)

Also, I’ve just noticed that it’s Rosie Duffield’s birthday today. Happy Birthday Rosie!

ADHD, eh? Abysmally Dismal Hopeless Dickhead, in his case.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 01/07/2023 13:06

I can't watch Jeremy Vine when he's on.

Thelnebriati · 01/07/2023 13:19

Why would he expect Starmer to 'take action' against Rosie Duffield? The law agrees with her. It would be illegal for Starmer to censure Rosie for her tweet.

Heliotroper · 01/07/2023 13:26

Labour has become a party of snitches and OJ fits the bill perfectly

nettie434 · 01/07/2023 13:31

Tweet from Hennie Inglis: Owen Jones attacks Rosie for standing up for mothers. Yet he doesn't attack Paul Embery, who Rosie was QTing. Funny that 🤔

https://twitter.com/HennieInglis/status/1674540838183895042?t=Cs2yhJVrzbdJTjnrEDD0jA&s=19

This gets to the heart of the matter for me. Owen Jones knows very well that Paul Embery would never get the sort of abuse that Rosie Duffield gets. It's what @ArabeIIaScott said - he lives for stirring up strife.

As a well paid journalist, he is much happier living under a Conservative government than under a Labour one. If he really cared, he'd be focusing on what Mika said about rising water bills, not deflecting it onto what Rosie Duffield tweeted.

Outrage and addictionOur brain produces dopamine and other chemicals that create a pleasure response. We enjoy these pleasant feelings so we repeat the activities that produce them. We choose which behaviors get reinforced and which triggers the release of more reward chemicals.

This same phenomenon also explains why gambling is a habit that is so difficult to break. Studies show that gambling produces a pattern of brain activity similar to cocaine in an addict.

Rage is another harmful pattern that has a chemical-reinforcement component. We talk about righteous indignation to justify our outrage, but virtue-signaling produces a vicious cycle that any of us can fall into. The more outraged we are at others, the more righteous we feel. That leads further down the rabbit hole where we experience moral superiority over others.

Outrage at other people’s failings allows us to feel vindicated from our own similar weaknesses. When we shout at them, it makes us feel pure. “I am so much smarter and better than my enemies! They are so wrong, and I am so right!” Again, that pleasure response is activated, and we will try to reinforce our way of thinking.

Sanctimonious rage is so intense and pleasurable that we return to it again and again. In short, it becomes addictive.

Dopamine Addiction: A Guide to Dopamine's Role in Addiction

Many people see dopamine as one of the main driving factors in addiction. But it's not that simple. We'll bust some common myths about dopamine and addiction to paint a clearer picture of their complex relationship.

I think it's a wonderful balanced piece personally!

Forwarder · 01/07/2023 17:31

@LarkLane an awful lot of the Labour MPs who bothered to vote against Andrew Bridgens motion were from Merseyside.

Presumably they think the matrons of Bootle will just keep voting like sheep?
