So I can’t believe this is real but it seems to be.
What do we make of Jo’s cervical trust a cancer charity who has an LGBT inclusive language page on their website suggesting another word for a vagina is a bonus
hole!!

Absolutely awful.

Given your track record of spreading misinformation about Pride I'd be careful with that one.

What misinformation? That my lgb friends thought the numbers were much lower in Dublin this year?! That was their opinion & I would believe them over RTÉ or any image that can be photoshopped ie the flag photoshopping "trans rights are human rights" into a 30 year old photo @Flickersy

bblackmirror · 29/06/2023 23:00

In a professional environment, any bleeding or discharge from your bonus hole? Any bonus hole skin changes or itching?
Ridiculous.

Also can we say fallopian tube, ovary or uterus? Where does it end.

Well yes, if the patient is a trans man who doesn't want to use the word vagina and who prefers the term. I don't see what's ridiculous about it. "Bonus hole" isn't being forced on anyone else.

And of course you can say fallopian tube etc. They're not dirty words. But if a trans man (not you) has cancer and would rather use other words then let them crack on.

Access to medical care and women (trans men in this case) being comfortable with intimate medical treatment is far more important than trying to police what terms other women use about their bodies.

Etoile41 · 29/06/2023 23:05

This is totally disgusting. What on earth are ppl thinking?!

Moonandstarzz · 29/06/2023 23:05

@bblackmirror@bblackmirror I'm not a medical doctor but if a patient has fallopian tubes, ovaries, a uterus, a cervix & a vagina I would hazard a guess that they are a woman..

ArabeIIaScott · 29/06/2023 23:05

Demeaning, sexist, offensive language about women's bodies affects all women.

ArabeIIaScott · 29/06/2023 23:07

Or do you think Breast Cancer UK should call breasts 'funbags' if some women find themselves unable to countenance the word 'breast'?

Flickersy · 29/06/2023 23:08

ArabeIIaScott · 29/06/2023 23:05

Demeaning, sexist, offensive language about women's bodies affects all women.

And if you were a cervical cancer nurse with a patient who was a trans man would you really scold them for not using what you deem to be the right words?

Or would you be professional, make them comfortable, and use the terms they requested?

Nomorenonbinary · 29/06/2023 23:08

To be fair it does say it's language to be used with trans men and non binary people. It doesn't say it must be used for all women.

Boiledbeetle · 29/06/2023 23:08

They can take their holes and shove them up their fucking arseholes!

It's not up to me (or you) to police what language women use about their own bodies.

You're trying to be ridiculous for effect, but I would say any nurses or care providers, especially those providing intimate care, should use whatever terms their patient is comfortable with.

Flickersy · 29/06/2023 23:11

Nomorenonbinary · 29/06/2023 23:08

To be fair it does say it's language to be used with trans men and non binary people. It doesn't say it must be used for all women.

It literally repeats several times "ask what language your patient is comfortable with".

Waitwhat23 · 29/06/2023 23:12

You're trying to be ridiculous for effect

How? How is 'funbags' more ridiculous than 'bonus hole'?

At least be consistent.

ArabeIIaScott · 29/06/2023 23:12

The phrase 'bonus hole' is offensive. No nurse or care staff should be forced to use offensive words. Nobody should be suggesting that this is an appropriate term to use for a vagina.

londonmummy1966 · 29/06/2023 23:13

By that reasoning - periods are Bonus bleeds, period pain bonus cramps and period poo bonus trots? Fairly clear that the "hole" thing has been thought up by men who have no idea what the grotty bits of female lived reality is

Because trans men are considerably less likely to have breasts, for a start...

No-one is being forced to use it.

But it may be very helpful if you're dealing with a woman who has transitioned and who has cancer.

Using a sick and vulnerable trans man (woman) to make a point and by doing so upsetting them would be a rather low point if you were a cancer nurse.

ArabeIIaScott · 29/06/2023 23:18

Because some transmen have had mastectomies, 'funbags' is ridiculous. But 'bonus hole' is serious and appropriate because someone said so, and it doesn't matter that most women find it grossly offensive and inappropriate.

Right, that's enough internet for today.

BettyFilous · 29/06/2023 23:18

I’d have more time for this if it was a document that said “these are terms transmen patients may use for their female anatomy in clinical settings” and had a table where eg front hole and bonus hole were listed against vagina. The A-Z glossary with the lengthy descriptions is unnecessary IMO.

When you're dealing with a woman with cancer, it doesn't matter what most other women think.

What matters is the patient.

And if they do have them and decide that their 'preferred term' is funbags? Why is that 'ridiculous' and bonus hole is not? You've been very clear that their preferred term should be respected. How is Arabella being "ridiculous for effect" in that case?

Delphinium20 · 29/06/2023 23:21

If people need such immature euphemisms to describe their body parts, I don't think them adults competent of making adult decisions. You know, like the decision to take testosterone to atrophy your "bonus hole."

Flickersy · 29/06/2023 23:19

So, any term at all that the patient prefers is what the HCP should use?

Then let them crack on with using funbags if that makes them more comfortable.

As I've said, what matters is the patients comfort.

Ideally yes. Especially when you're providing intimate medical care (i.e. cervical cancer care) to women.
