About fecking time. Now make "sex" a category that can be subject to harassment

He's not banning it, just suspending , temporarily, those who use it to harass.

It has become an insult to throw at gender critical tweeters in just the same way as terf is so I see where he is coming from.

And some TRAs are currently coming up with new ways to twist words into insults as i type probably!

Chelsea Manning has a daughter? Oh, wait. It's a MishyPost.

DiabolicalFinial · 21/06/2023 12:43

When people use “butt hurt”, you know exactly who they are. “Lols”

So many genders you assume their Mishy.

And reducing people to their body parts. That's creepy and essentialist.

I think this is crazy. I don't like the term 'cis', wouldn't ever use it to describe myself, might well raise an objection to someone using it to describe me in a face to face conservation. But it's perfectly natural for an interest group, community, or whatever to coin little bits of its own specialist vocabulary, Twitter would be no kind of platform at all if it didn't allow the use of such terms.

NotTerfNorCis · 21/06/2023 13:24

TRAs want you to be able to identify as anything you want so long as it's within their ideology. That's why they won't let people reject 'cis'.

I think they genuinely don't get why people object to 'cis'.

Read what Elon wrote - he's banning it when used to harass people. TRAs can use it in their own echo chambers to their hearts content.

You'd think given they're so upset about 'misgendering' they wouldn't be so keen on doing it themselves which is what they were doing to James Esses.

bellinisurge · 21/06/2023 14:36

"But it's perfectly natural for an interest group, community, or whatever to coin little bits of its own specialist vocabulary,"
It's when they impose that dumb shit on other people and call them bigots for dismissing it.
It's like saying I'm a typical Taurean or typical Leeds United fan . It means fuck all and bears no relation to me in real life.

Imposing the term cis on people who do not share the belief system is a political act - not a neutral act. It violates the dignity and integrity of people - and what's more it is most often used as a pejorative - in the same way that 'straight' is used as a negative value judgement compared to 'queer'.

Love Elon for this. Sanity staring to prevail, at last.

I do recommend Mr Menno's song about c*s, it's very catchy

Oh they are 'Jonathan' is telling Musk that he's only the owner, not the one in charge!

Their heads will explode when people don't except their ideology. Toys out the pram time. Thankfully people have had enough of the BS and know that facts matter, gender is a made up concept and more and more are not accepting the crap

Wiccan · 21/06/2023 21:04

Brilliant news ! I have told 2 people to fuck off this week for calling me that . 😁

That's what's great. It's given people permission to object to it. And lots of people are totally bemused that so many people have an issue with it, because they only see one side.

JudgeAnderson · 21/06/2023 22:21

Tricky one. I find the term offensive but I don't want people to lose the right to offend me.
However I am glad to see the usage challenged.

TodayInahurry · 21/06/2023 06:57

Good, I regard it as an insult from unpleasant people

Funny because I've never seen it used as an insult, it's mainly used to clarify if a person is trans or not. I've never seen anyone shout "cis" in the street at non-trans people to insult them. I have however, seen and heard plenty of derogatory insults thrown at gay and trans people. "Groomer" for an example seems to be thrown around on Twitter on a daily basis.

https://www.dictionary.com/browse/cisgender

Despite what EM says, it's in the dictionary and has been for a long time, and no dictionary I've looked cisgender up in lists it as vulgar/offensive/slur. (Dictionaries always add a note next to offensive words.)

The Latin prefix "cis" (goes back a long time) means "on the same side as", and is used in many contexts besides gender.

IMHO you can't just announce "cisgender" is an offensive slur because you don't like the fact transpeople exist.

MerlinsLostMarbles · 21/06/2023 22:24

Saying cisgender on any other social media platform isn't any problem, just to add.

I don't have a problem with cisgender. I have a huge problem with cis-woman. I am a woman. Full stop.

Circumferences · 21/06/2023 22:38

I have a problem being called "cisgender" as it happens.

It's because I don't believe in gender ideology.

My being called a "cis woman" is deliberately offensive and provocative. Just no. It's not "just a description" it's forcing an ideology upon me that I vehemently disagree with and it's insulting.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 21/06/2023 22:39

cisgender = your gender aligns with your sex right?

but no-one is ever able to explain the characteristics of the gender that aligns with a female body and the gender that aligns with a male one

leaving me forced to conclude that it's all sexist, made up bollocks

JanesLittleGirl · 21/06/2023 22:41

Sorry, I should have made clear that since I believe that gender is an artificial construct, cisgender is equally meaningless.

SirVixofVixHall · 21/06/2023 22:42

Where did the word come from ?

Hairday · 21/06/2023 22:47

Musk is insane. Nothing he dies or says makes any sense. He should not be banning words randomly, but whatever.

sanluca · 21/06/2023 22:47

it's mainly used to clarify if a person is trans or not

It is only used in relation to transgender when certain people who put a lot of faith in their idea of gender want to label other people, regardless if those people have the same set of beliefs. So when discussing amongst themselves, people can use cis and trans to their hearts content.
But when someone clearly states they don't want to be labelled in a certain way by someone else and that someone else continues labelling the first person, the second person is pushing their sets of beliefs onto other people. If the second person doesn't stop, that is harrassment.
