Mark Ritson on the Marketing Week website starts his review "Oh fuck, Jaguar, what have you done?"

Succint.

WhereYouLeftIt · 20/11/2024 19:57

Oh my giddy aunt! Had a look for stuff on Jaguar and found this on Twitter.

Transcript:
And at Jaguar, we are passionate about our people; and we're committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive and unified culture, that is representative not only of the people who use our products, but in the society in which we all live. A culture where our employees can bring their authentic selves to work.

And we're on a transformative journey of our own; driven by a belief in diversity, inclusion, creativity, policy and most importantly - action. We've established over 15 DEI groups such as Pride who are here tonight <waves> in the back <thumbs up, whooping from the back>. Thank you guys for coming. Women in Engineering, and Neurodiversity Matters. We've launched a major policy revision, such as Transitioning At Work to drive equity and support for our communities. Embracing individuality is our superpower.

Definitely belongs on a boycott list!

String vest and a glittery jacket😬

Ingenieur · 20/11/2024 20:17

I can see why Jaguar would lean-into this a little harder after losing an employment tribunal on gender-related grounds.

But yeah, that advert is terrible.

Certainly in the UK, I can't imagine the stereotypical Jag owner having much truck with that! 😄

The major problem with the jag ad is not that it's woke. It's that it is among the most terrible ads I have ever seen.

My thoughts exactly.

EsmaCannonball · 20/11/2024 21:03

They need Don Draper back.

lcakethereforeIam · 20/11/2024 21:41

Nearly 200,000 watches of the ad on YouTube and, as far as I can see, not a single like. Can they turn the likes off?

I suppose it's got people talking about it. They're not, on the whole, saying anything nice though.

Surely the Jaguar, or should that be jaGUar, rebrand must be a joke? Or some kind of trolling viral exercise?

I've read several articles from car industry and marketing professionals today that all express astonishment and dismay. Apparently when Jaguar goes all electric it is actually planning to double the prices of its vehicles and is prepared to jettison 85-90% of its existing customer base. I find it hard to believe that strategy will work but the ad may be an indicator of the market they are going for. We know the young and woke tend to be middle class but not necessarily the kind of rich that has the money for a double-price Jag. It's insane. The cars are going to have to be incredible.

Mike Baldwin would be livid.

Was just talking about this today and seriously wondered if there is some type of plot twist/punchline to come, especially having a look at their X feed and seeing their replies to comments doubling down with a hint of sarcasm at times. I mean if it is then, bravo.

But then again, reading what @WhereYouLeftIt has said and all the DEI stuff perhaps they have been captured after all, which would be a great disappointment.

I mean it’s 10 years since this very cool ad:

Such a shame if they have really just abandoned their core market.

🤣 at the Jag ad. It’s doing its utmost to alienate Jerry and Margot and the golf club set.

ShamblesRock · 20/11/2024 22:16

"Transforming the brand away from cars"

Hmm, do the execs at Jaguar not see the problem with this?

Tallisker · 20/11/2024 22:18

Ooo Mark Strong 🥰

BabyStopCryin · 20/11/2024 22:28

I've worked in marketing, design and branding for household brands for, ohhhh pushing 30 years, and my professional opinions is... fook that.

I've met the type of agencies that sell this crap - and worked with the type of internal clients who oooh and ahhh over any turd spray painted gold.

'No publicity of bad publicity' is NOT accurate!

I can only imagine the price tag...

TUCKINGFYP0 · 20/11/2024 22:39

I have no personal experience of owning a luxury car. But I’m assured by someone I know who sells them that the last thing their customers want is to be modern and inclusive . Otherise they would be catching the bus.

They are buying exclusivity, cachet, showing off their money and good taste, they want to identify with a world famous brand with a long history.

They don’t want to be progressive , unique , modern , diverse and cultural transformative. They don’t give a stuff if everyone at jaguar feels safe and valued. They just want to drive a beautiful car and show it off to everyone else.

YesterdaysFuture · 20/11/2024 22:45

The advert has to be a spoof, because this is the stuff someone would make as satire of a modern rebrand.

I'm trying to think of a single success story of a company ditching its core market.

Chersfrozenface · 21/11/2024 00:07

According to the article I read (starting "Oh, fuck..."), Jaguar won't be producing or selling any cars at all for 12 months or possibly longer.

Er, yeah...

lcakethereforeIam · 21/11/2024 00:27

If they're taking the piss and they're going to pop up tomorrow with an 'we're only kidding, now look at this amazing car!'. It'd have to be a pretty special vehicle. People generally don't like being made fools of.

I do wonder though. That advertisement looked very cheap.

It did, didn't it? I kept thinking it's unlikely that a multi-million dollar rebrand would launch with something a second-year marketing student could've made the day before their assignment was due in.

Someone on TwittX posted a great little marketing homily on "Remember you are Not The Customer". Mind you, I'd have thought most of Jaguar's brand team and their agencies actually are the “younger, more affluent and urban livers” who are “cash rich and time poor” they say they want to reach, and some of 'em must have £50k to splash on a car. Surprised they seem to identify with weird-looking models being angry in primary coloured papier mâché.

I was going to say, it's like a team on The Apprentice were given an unlimited budget.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/11/2024 01:16

Yes that was my first thought too.

QueenBitch666 · 21/11/2024 01:38

Tropic? They donate to mermaids so I've heard

Craftymam · 21/11/2024 02:21

Oh shit! I’m in the midlands. Every other person you meet works at JLR. And the Ford factory made huge job cuts last week.

Fuck! It’s a full on recession setting vibe. Why do these people listen to stupid consultants and not just stick to what they are good at and what the customers love.

EsmaCannonball · 21/11/2024 04:27

The teaser glimpse of the new car looks like the back of my air-fryer.

The new logos and fonts look like they belong on pots of face cream or the front door of a nail bar.

If this is all a big joke, a way to generate hype, and they are going to surprise everyone at the product launch in December, it could all backfire on them. I suppose the slogan 'copy nothing' could be the key. They've produced the kind of woke, vapid, hectoring kind of branding that has been prevalent for the last decade or so but, come December, they are going to swerve all that and go in a completely different direction?

I just can't believe a classic company would willing produce something so excruciatingly infantile. It's like they put Bubbles from Ab Fab in charge of branding.

Yes they’ve donated 10% of profits on Body Love products sold between June 1 and July 31st to Mermaids (I don’t know if it’s every year but it’s been a few years)
