The new British Cycling policy goes public at 11am tomorrow. Anyone dare to speculate on the outcome? Will it be a win for women?

NEW: British Cycling is to ban trans women athletes from competitive women’s races. The new policy rules that only those born female will be eligible. A new ‘open’ category will replace the current men’s category.

Oh yes!!!

Things are levelling out, although the loves class as happy I would say!

Oo
As a PP mentioned, America has woken up and started voting

What I mean to say is that the option should be male/female/ Trans. Male
and female would refer to birth sex only.

You would need two more categories because females claiming to be men cannot compete fairly with males claiming to be women. With or without a testosterone boost for the females and testosterone suppression for the males.
Also there is no necessity for a special category based on identity.

It will never be enough to be a male trans person competing in an open competition. I suspect they will fade to obscurity and won't be lauded and awarded.

The thing is that I understand Bridges was competing quite successfully as a man before transitioning. However, it's very competitive and only the very best succeed. That just makes it worse that they want to bulldoze female athletes out of the way. Pathetic. Utterly pathetic.

Nearly right! Bridges was competing successfully pre transition, but an accident put paid to their international ranking in the male competitions, but because there is a huge discrepancy between male and female timings EB as a poorly ranked man was still ahead of most elite female competitors . So they transitioned, hoping to race as a trans woman in womens races. Bridges is on record as saying that they had always intended to transition post Paris Olympics ( high hopes of a medal). But there doesn’t seem to be much if any evidence, that this was said before the accident. The answer to the question I think a lot of people would like to know is , if Bridges hadn’t had the accident would they still be riding as a man?

viques, I know that swimming mums, tennis mums, and gymnastics mums can be seriously competitive, sometimes close to deranged. Is this also true of cycling mums?

GrinAndVomit · 26/05/2023 15:47

Excellent news. The pendulum is definitely swinging back towards sanity.

I only know of one cycling mum, who used to post on MN and turned out to have skin in the game in the form of EB. So on that basis I would say yes, 100% in my very limited experience. 🙂

However there are probably lots of lovely cycling mums who stand at the side of the track holding stop watches and sticking plasters and don’t call other women rude names for being GC.

The angries have it at the moment - lots of furious men not getting their way and stomping their size 11s in frustration. Soz boys.

TheShellBeach · 26/05/2023 15:49

I'm so glad to see this at last.
The powers that be are starting to be sensible again.

Now, if we could just persuade the writers of online forms which ask for "gender" to ask for "sex" instead.....................................................................

SirChenjins · 26/05/2023 15:51

I’m sure this has been explained somewhere but please humour me…why aren’t there male/female/trans men/trans women categories in sports?

I think the point is that two wrongs don't make a right. This government has had serious issues. British Cycling may also have serious issues (I wouldn't know).

But government policy on refugees has absolutely nothing to do with cycling policies so there's absolutely no reason why Emily has included this in Emily's rant, it just makes Emily look like a toddler melting down because they've been told they can't have any more Haribo.

Bridges's statement contains shining examples of whatabouttery. The comment about "whitest, straightest sport" is a flagrant attempt to make a false analogy between being black or brown or same-sex attracted and being a bepenised person who wants to beat women in sporting events. It also serves to force-team black and brown people and LGB people with bepenised people who want to beat women in sporting events.

Unluckily for Bridges, we are getting pretty good at spotting whatabouttery and forced-teaming.

BenCoopersSupportWren · 26/05/2023 15:54

Box of tissues for Emily.

On reflection, they're very upset. Better make it man-size.

The official line is that there wouldn’t be enough funding or competition for such a small cohort of the population to have their own category.
I’d also consider the fact that it is exclusively males entering and dominating women’s sports which is the issue. They’re winning big prizes while having a huge advantage. Not so for any trans men who compete in men’s sports.
In short, opening up trans categories would not provide those males with the required funding and validation. It only impacts the females negatively. Which, historically, people have not really given a shit about.

There was no such thing as "transgender" five minutes ago.
Taking hormones is a choice.
Claiming a special identity does not put you in a different physical category.
Male and female or Men/boys and Women/girls covers every human being on the planet.

OscarsAmmonite · 26/05/2023 16:00

Great news indeed!

Oh I agree with all that, but if we assume that Mr Emily and his pals are truly serious about competing fairly then it would seem a logical step to open up further categories. Of course it’s all BS - TWAM.

Good to know about the official line though.

BaronMunchausen · 26/05/2023 16:01

Perhaps an International Military Tribunal is needed, given that there's apparently a genocide going on...

Chersfrozenface · 26/05/2023 15:25

Called it.

The numbers started changing once clocks in the US ticked round to daytime.

It'll be tactically brigaded. But for a few hours before the batsignal went out, reality was apparent.

Needmoresleep · 26/05/2023 16:04

People are calling it a toddler tantrum. Strikes me more as a narc rage.

JellySaurus · 26/05/2023 16:04

lifeturnsonadime · 26/05/2023 11:28

I also like that the headlines state that 'transgender women are banned from female cycling competitions' making it clear that they are not banned from competing at all.

I think that is a step in the right direction.

They're not women. That headline implies that adult human females who do not identify as women are banned from the the women's competition.

Language matters.

Way off the mark about cycling being the 'whitest' sport - has he seen sailing? Rowing? Canoing? Archery? Clay pigeon shooting?

Mind you, isn't sailing gender-neutral?

I don’t think fairness is a genuine concern. Just an easier win and the rewards that brings.

As a white man taking up space in a women’s sport which could potentially be taken by a woman of colour… he’s got some brass neck.

Bridges obviously hasn't watched many equestrian events either.

Now there is a sport where men and women compete on equal terms...perhaps Emily should consider swapping one's bike for a horse?
