The new British Cycling policy goes public at 11am tomorrow. Anyone dare to speculate on the outcome? Will it be a win for women?

What an obnoxious shit Bridges is, going around breaking all the other records like a kid smashing other children's toys because they're not allowed to play with them.

I wonder if Sandy has ever said no?

This.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/06/2023 11:19

Well done Michelle Bergstrand for coming first among women.

ArcaneWireless · 02/06/2023 11:58

Michelle - rightly first.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 02/06/2023 12:08

Well done Michelle!

Incidentally, here’s Bridges (and Dixon) smashing a female QoM record on Strava.

Funny how Bridges claims that the on-going Harper study will show a massive drop off in performance, yet beats the previous women’s record by a huge margin. Michelle Bergstrand is/was an elite cyclocross athlete.

What segment is that? Be interesting to see how Strava responds if you flag it...

All about Emily as in all about how Emily feels. It really grates with me when I see people so sad that this one male person can't have everything they want regardless of the effect on women, even if the posters reluctantly agree that the BC decision is correct. Lots of hand-wringing about the supposed difficulty of deciding between fair sport for women on the one hand and men who claim to be women getting validated on the other. And all the references to "she" and "her".
A lot of the comments supportive of the decision are from the same bloke, who is also annoyingly willing on women's behalf to give up language and accept Bridges as a woman. It's great that he is commenting in support, but still.

So ridiculous. As if a female athlete doesn't have to make sacrifices, like when/if to have children. But for some reason a man should have to make zero sacrifices for his own choices and the woman should make sacrifices for him?

viques · 02/06/2023 12:23

You could almost laugh at the ridiculous spectacle of two men seriously battling it out between them , each of them so desperate to win a woman’s event that they don’t realise how much people are sniggering at them and their lack of self awareness. They must be so proud of themselves, it’s almost as though they are real athletes .

Except that every “new record” they set means that future goals for female cyclists become impossible to achieve using a female body. Every race they enter and win using their male bodies is another personal achievement for aspiring female cyclists that is put out of reach for all time.

Well done Michelle Bergstrand, we all know who the real winner of that event is.

Not sure - assuming North Yorkshire somewhere as that is where Dixon and Bergstrand are based.

Strava has drunk the Koolaid so I expect they’d do absolutely nothing.

I don’t think Michelle is impressed at losing her QoM to these two.

Oh, I will give her a follow!

Hope Michelle goes back with an e-bike. I bet Bridges would flag it though...

WarningToTheCurious · 02/06/2023 13:13

I think Michelle must be a pretty awesome rider - given that she’s in her fifties and the other two are in their twenties.

Here she is at No 13 in 100 Women in Cycling.

Great to see Dervla in there! She might not be wearing Lycra but she could show most of us a clean pair of heels. RIP Dervla, I hope they have puncture repair kits in heaven .

Stunning and Brave. having seen photos of B but not D I'll hazard a guess that the former refers to D, the latter B. Or maybe it's both to both, a magnificent achievement either way.

PomegranateOfPersephone · 02/06/2023 14:10

She is going to wonder why she suddenly has a lot of follower requests from women she has never heard of!

She has, but only a firm "No!" to reality, I suspect...

2Rebecca · 02/06/2023 17:30

I suspect BC don't notice the problems allowing TW to ride Breeze rides causes in terms of BC members like me not considering becoming Breeze riders because of it. If BC want a scheme to encourage new cyclists they should have one and stop pretending they think women need their own rides if it's actually femininity they are targeting. Being a Breeze leader is a major faff for no money anyway

2Rebecca · 02/06/2023 17:31

Breeze leaders that should have been not riders

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 02/06/2023 18:06

Tangentially-related to the not becoming a Breeze Leader: I was considering volunteering as a Guider after GGUK amended the Promise to be atheist-inclusive. Then GGUK brought in a gender self-ID policy and I decided that doing so would be too risky. Self-ID converts a single-sex Guide unit into a potentially mixed one. The Scouts have mixed units and their policies reflect this; both a female Scout and her parents know that she might share a tent with boys and under what limited circumstances this could happen (IIRC, when the choice is between her being alone in a tent or sharing with boys, it's considered safer to share with boys). But GGUK's policies are written as though units are female-only and don't address the safeguarding issues surrounding mixed-sex sleeping etc, which creates a safeguarding timebomb. And I have no desire to be blown up by that safeguarding timebomb. Being a Guider is a thankless task that requires far more time each week than the two hour meeting, and I'm not prepared to put myself through that hassle when GGUK won't give Guiders the tools to protect the girls and themselves.

PoshCoffee · 02/06/2023 19:26

BC are perfectly aware of the issues of having TW as Breeze ride leaders and participants as many omen have told them over the past 5 years. If they were ever brave enough to release the stats on the number of riders and volunteers by area over the past 10 years, I would bet my house that the areas that have TW have lower numbers of participants than period to the TW joining. In my area there are now zero Breeze whereas 5 years ago there were loads.

I thought exactly the same.

I ride to parkrun each week but I use my running watch so until I amend it on Strava, it shows as a fast run. Strava always says " this looks like a ride, would you like to amend it". So it is possible that it would flag an e-bike ride on a push-bike ride itself.

I agree Cheaty Emily would probably flag it anyway. Or Cheaty Cara.

I have cancelled my Strava subscription today and said in the comments for the reason why "because I don't think male bodied people should hold female QOMs". To be fair I wasn't going to renew anyway, but it infuriates me.

Just coming back to this, I did a little digging. The segment is Unsuities to Moor gate. Michelle Bergstrand’s time is 1.45. Bridges’ time is 1.18. Guess where that places Bridges? Even if it’s just a small little segment on Strava you can see Bridges is comparable to other males.

Absolutely. Rather puts the lie to “I’m as weak as a kitten on cross sex hormones” doesn’t it?

DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder · 05/06/2023 10:22

Even if hormone therapy did completely eradicate the comprehensive male athletic advantage and cancelled out everything from muscle:fat ratio, bone density, heart size, haemoglobin level, fast twitch muscle, Q angle and so on...even if it did completely eradicate all of that, it still isn't right for male born people to enter female sports because that's a place taken away from a female born person. There are already fewer opportunities for women in sports than men. It's not OK to give the boys a crack at all the boys' competition places, plus an opportunity to go at the girls', and the girls just have whatever is left over.
